lol jk, obviously this is the b-52s in a walk

the actual purpose of this thread is to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the mesopotamia ep and talk about how good and underrated it is

there are other threads on the b-52s but they tend to be dominated by discussion of cosmic thing and their relationship to much more boring bands like rem and pylon, was hoping for some mesopotamia specific discussion

Its Loveland.

Mesopotamia is the best thing they did imo.

ah, so it is. well, this is new to me as of yesterday. no wonder this lame comedy poll title had never been used before!

anyway still very very good music, still stand by my conclusion that it must be overrated based on my ignorance of the ep in general

Agreed about Mesopotamia being their best, both mixes of it. Might be worth editing the thread title to get some mote Mesopotamia specific discussion?

Would be nice to see a reissue with the longer versions and any alternate mixes included

would love a deluxe reissue of mesopotamia with both mixes included, plus whatever demos exist from those studio sessions (in case there are more gems like this alternate version of queen of las vegas below)

Loveland by the B-52s features Charles Rocket on accordion whereas Loveless by My Bloody Valentine doesn't, so I'm going to have to hand this one to the B-52s

apart from the second Fun Boy Three record and his own stuff, did David Byrne ever produce any other albums? It's maybe because it was the first version I heard, but I prefer the 1990 mix to the original version. I've got a second vinyl copy of the original UK pressing of Mesopotamia with the extended versions of Loveland, Cake and Throw That Beat In The Garbage Can that were apparently included by mistake and later withdrawn, I remember being briefly excited because I thought it might be worth something, but it turns out it isn't.

As some Ilxors know, this is my favorite release by this band

I know someone explained the differences in the Mesopotamia thread, but is the one with Party Mix the "original" version? The songs are longer.

there's already a mesopotamia thread?!?

afaiui there's the original Byrne mix released in 1982, in the UK this was originally accidently released with extended versions of Loveland, Cake and Throw That Beat In The Garbage Can that were later removed. They did a new mix of the Mesopotamia album in 1990 that was when it was re-released on CD as a double album with Party Mix. So that's not the 'original' version (but is maybe closer to the B-52s original intention for what the record would sound like before Byrne's production choices?)

Byrne's long versions are amazing. Especially Loveland and Cake.

everything, Monday, 31 October 2022 17:14 (one year ago) link

What was the beef with Byrne anyway?

they toured with him so it's unlikely they didn't get along? I think the problem was more than they were being rushed to release new product before they were ready to - this was the first album they had to create from whole cloth, the first two were all stuff they'd been performing for a while before they recorded.
