“Wibbling Rivalry” was wildly disappointing when I finally heard it for the first time earlier this year (when Be Here Now anniversary-mania happened). I expected more yelling and screaming.

Mostly fun to me as one of the only entirely non-musical singles to ever chart in the UK

We should poll those.

My vote would be John cage 4'33"

On this one I voted NoWaySis.

Their only hit contained two of their own-written tracks on the b-side. Because they were not completely stupid.

The others I'm aware of are Steptoe & Son live, the RSPB birdsong one, 2 Minute Silence and the Big Ben millennium chimes (which is musical really but is essentially a field recording/non-musical type release).

There's also a few which are half musical/half comedy sketches like Yin & Yan's If, Stan Freberg's Rock Island Line and the two santa punch-ins by Chris Hill.

Nowaysis also had the honour of being introduced by Gary Glitter on TOTP

Voted for Mike Flowers Pops because I still think of it as the gold standard as to how to pull off a goofy retro novelty cover of an existing song.

Has a lot more replay value than Richard Cheese or the Post Modern Jukebox.

The full effect is when matched with the video. Choreography and direction all in acutely observed step.

Worthy of Peter Serafinowicz

I thought he sounded like John Cale, the first time I heard it on Chris Evans BBC breakfast show

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Funny story about when they met in Notting Hill R&TE

huh, wow, i always thought that WAS Richard Cheese! only ever heard it once as a novelty play on US alt-rock radio. taped just a snippet of it --- the "ohh-hoo" backing vocals smeared into the opening notes of "Tattva."

I would poll the non-musical hits, in the hopes it could become a thread about such things in general, but I'm convinced there must be more I don't know about, partly hence the hopes it could become a thread about such things in general

two months pass...

Okay found another (mostly) non-musical hit. The Hysterics' No. 44 smash EP Five Tracks of Laughter from xmas 1981.

The Jingle Bells opener does admittedly set laughter to music (eat your heart out Winx) but there are four other tracks - only one of which I can find on YouTube - which seem to just be unmoored recordings of giggling, burping etc.
