"The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" seems the obvious choice here, must have been wild hearing that in 1981
"That's the Joint" a great jam too
T Ski Valley dropping some serious knowledge on "Never Let Go"
Hey, well it's T-Ski Valley and I want you to knowThat prices are high, wherever you goThe price of food is at its all time highI like to travel, can't afford to flyYou get up early and lose some sleepTo get to work, you can't get a seatThe busses are crowded and the trains are packedThe Guardian Angels are trying to fight backThings are hard and I want you to knowBut just hang on and never let go
and at least two tracks sample Genius of Love, dope, Rapture also a good showcase for the xover of disco/(post)punk/rap (Magnificent Seven could have been on as well)
I have a weak spot for Apache (JUMP ON IT)

First look, Funky 4 +1, but of course "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" is all-time. Trouble Funk is always a sentimental favorite, and they and Lovebug Starski have more good things to come. I'm also a fan of "Apache" in literally any context.

“that’s the joint” is one of the best songs ever, any genre

I've always enjoyed this video of some kid jamming along to 'That's The Joint' on a cheap bass that's almost the height of him.

I used to have a comp with Positive Life on it, absolutely loved it. Shame it’s not on streaming.

I really don’t see what people find so amazing about “That’s the Joint”. I mean, the song’s great and all, but so are a lot of other songs on this list. Voting “Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel”.

Obviously "Ant Rap" and "Der Kommissar" were too good for the list. Of the two my vote would have gone to both of them. Adam Ant pioneered a hip-hop / world beat crossover approach that could so easily have been an alternative future for hip-hop and Falco of course invented gangster rap.
