We don't have a thread about Heardle & Heardle variants?

Well why not eh?

Heardle - The only one I bother with these days.

Also there is

Heardle 60s
Heardle 70s
Heardle 80s[url]
Heardle 90s
[url=https://90s-heardle.glitch.me/]Heardle 90s (different one)

...I don't bother with any of these since 80s Heardle had Reet Petite and their Twitter account maintained that it was a reasonable choice. But maybe some of you do.

There are also a load of artist-specific ones.

Wow nice bbcode there

it’s fun to play this with my colleagues during lunchbreak when I’m at the office.

didn’t know about the decade-specific ones, that might be a bit much, but still: no 00s and 10s Heardles yet?

I think they were set up in response to people complaining about there being too much new music on the main Heardle.

it was very 21st-century focused when I first started playing it in early March, but they very rapidly expanded their scope. I posted this in April:

Heardle on the other hand seems to be putting a lot of work in expanding its data set: whereas before it looked like almost exclusively big US hits from this century, now you have much older stuff like Led Zep’s “Immigrant Song” popping up, but also things like Daft Punk’s “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” (influential, but not a big US chart hit) and even, earlier this week, Koffee’s “Toast”. Makes things a lot more interesting obviously.

this expansion has only continued, I think. the fact that you have no idea what era a given day’s song is going to be from is a big part of the fun

the original heardle is generally quite easy. when they're older songs they're usually things from the classic hits safe list

Today's for example! If you click on "stats" and then "history" you can start scrolling back through the days and see the vote distribution for each song,

“get ur freak on,” for example, provides a pretty good cross section of who owned the song and who heard it on the radio

I like a Heardle.
I feel I fail because I don't know any Ed Sheeran/ One Direction but there has been more older stuff recently.
Out of 105, I've got 32% in 1s, 10% in 2s, 13% on 3rd go, 7% on 4th go, 10% on 5th go, 8% on 6th go and 25% not gotten! That's pretty terrible.

Oh hang on - ones I didn't do, even before I discovered it, it counts as 'not getting'. I started on #8- Fleetwood Mac.

kinder, Saturday, 25 June 2022 10:12 (one week ago) link

it doesn't count them as "not getting" but it breaks your streak, mine says 75/105 correct, 71.4% correct, 1:9 current:max streak (forgot it yesterday)

oh no you're right it does. that's pretty annoying.

today I clicked play for my first go and got the full 16 seconds?! but when i clicked it again it was just one second, then seemed to work normally. still didn't get it...

seeing a lot of music people failing to get today's heardle. it's one of the biggest songs of the last five years, maybe the biggest! (though yes it is horrible) - not sure what this says about the position of mainstream pop.

I attempt it most days. I didn't get it today. (Wed.) Though I've almost certainly (half-)heard it. That's exactly the sort of vocal affectation that just gets me switching radio stations tbh.

A friend who instantly recognised it (but was unfamiliar with Chic and The Smiths last week, for instance) pointed out that they are virtually my neighbour. Which appears to be true. (Leaving me astonished that they're the sort of artist about which someone would casually learn that level of detail.)

it's the most shazammed song of all time!

the top three here are all nothing short of horrific

i figured it out once the horrible vocals started

it was thee biggest song of 2020 in my house (i know it's from 2019), so got it in 1 second. i still love it, 'horrible' vocals and all - sorry!

stirmonster, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 13:07 (three days ago) link

I've failed Thursday's too now. Not sure I've failed twice in row before lol. A completely different type of studiously ignored thing this time.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Wednesday, 29 June 2022 14:11 (three days ago) link

i got it immediately as i usually do when i know the song at all. i'm pretty sure i shazammed the song back when it was first breaking, not because i liked it and was intrigued but because i wanted to know who on earth was responsible for this monstrosity (i've come to enjoy the song a little more now, mostly b/c i find it funny somehow)

in the us at least, it was undeniably a runaway streaming smash that young ppl would play at parties and such but it was obviously very polarizing to the older crowds, so while radio acknowledged it, they didn't keep it around as long or take it as high as they would have a comparably reactive song by a more down-the-middle act like maroon 5. by and large radio is what ratifies the most omnipresent of hits in america now, and what they play is also largely what you'll also hear as far as current music on tv commercials, at sports stadiums and the like as well. there are a lot of big hits in america now that plenty of older folks, even music-loving ones, won't be familiar with unless they put an active effort into keeping up with what the youngns like

I entered "monkey" and the song didn't come up in the options :(

in the uk it was on radio on heavy rotation for months and months.

xpost

It spent something like 3 months at #1 in the UK
