hell yes!

too bad i have no clue what to vote for. it could be any of the first four songs or the last three and that's over half of the album and totally ignores "kiss me on my neck." so. . . uhh, gonna have to think about it.

also did anybody ever figure out what "props to the lonely people" was?

I'm ANTIFA and I vote. (Austin), Sunday, 5 June 2022 18:53 (one year ago) link

I went with Time's A Wasting but it could be anything off this brilliant, brilliant album, and was very nearly Green Eyes.

Bag Lady because it slaps.
Green Eyes was a favorite the first times I listened to the album, for its mix of gravity-levity and different parts. I'm sorry I love you.
So many wonderful things happening in the background of Didn't cha know.
... & On a vocal masterpiece among others.
Kiss me deserves votes, great groove.
I never understood / liked the opener.
I still haven't voted, but I'm going to.

"Cleva" signaled the break from Baduism; it earned my vote.

Not voting because I can't choose

green eyes is 10 of the best minutes in the history of recorded sound

From the lack of discussion, I am suddenly not sure that this will receive more votes than the initial poll
I'm seeing her live for the first time in 10 days !

Yes!

I voted for "Green Eyes", but in part because its suite-structure captures something I love about the album generally which is that if often feels like a series of song suites - e.g. in my head the stretch from "Didn't Cha Know" through to "Clever" is really long suite, and similarly "Booty" and "Kiss Me On My Neck" are one song in my head (this is despite the fact that these tunes are very distinct from one another).

I THINK I was the vote for "Kiss Me", but to a one, would have been happy to see any of the songs receiving votes win (and a few that didn't too, esp. ."...& On").

i could’ve voted for so many of these songs but i went with “penitentiary” bc it’s just about my favorite start to a record ever

Kinda wish I had voted for “…And On” now. Love how simultaneously pretty and sarcastic the overlaid vocals are.

Tim F, Tuesday, 5 July 2022 11:40 (one year ago) link

i forgot to vote but it'd probably be "green eyes" just for the wow factor

ufo, Tuesday, 5 July 2022 11:44 (one year ago) link

Post controversial opinion: I prefer Badu's shorter tracks.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 12:09 (one year ago) link

Impossible to chose but I would have thrown a vote at “…& On” for this section:

I remember when I went
With Momma to the Washateria
Remember how I felt the day
I first started my period
Remember there in school one day
I learned I was inferior
Water in my cereal
Badu in your stereo
Holla if you hear me though
Remembering is good if you don'tI remember when I went

I learned I was inferior

Badu in your stereo
Holla if you hear me though
Remembering is good if you don't
Let it be the fear in you
Wrap ya head with this material

which moves so gracefully between the quotidian and the profound
