I forgot this started Thursday night. It's virtual.
"Thank you for registering for "When I Think of Home: Race and Borders in Popular Music," the 20th Anniversary Pop Conference!
The Conference opens on Thursday April 21st with a 7 pm ET special event, "Toasting the Pop Confeence at 20," hosted by longtime conference organizer Eric Weisbard; and an 8 pm ET all-star keynote. It features three musicians: AROOJ AFTAB, the acclaimed semi-classical, Hindustani, minimalist composer, songwriter and singer, who was recently awarded the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Performance and is the jirst ever Pakistani artist to receive a Grammy; Canadian-Colombian, Grammy-nominated and Polaris Prize-winning interdisciplinary artist, musician and curator LIDO PIMIENTA; and singer, songwriter, musician, businessman, activist, ambassador and politician YOUSSOU N’DOUR, one of the most highly celebrated African musicians of all time. The keynote is moderated by Ann Powers, NPR Music Critic, produced by Jason King, hosted by New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, and presented in conjunction with Billboard.
It'll be followed by three days of spectacular virtual panels, roundtables, mentorship sessions, film screenings, concerts and 'bonuts beats'!"

1:15 break:
For this break we have:
1. The 2018 music video for "Giovanni" by Jamila Woods. Inspired by Nikki Giovanni's poem "Ego Trippin," Jamila has said the song is about “owning and celebrating all the parts of myself. It’s about legacy and lineage, and how the love and strength of the people who made me makes me feel invincible.”

Keynote last night was solid and I was honored to be one of the invited toast-providers in the runup to it. I'll be moderating Ann Powers and Holly Kruse's small panel tomorrow, 9 am Pacific.

The Ann Powers-led round table on listening during the pandemic is great, but the other panel happening is top notch too. Dip in and out of both as you can!
