I'm surprised at how few of these I know tbh

That's because it's a secret history!

paolo, Thursday, 31 March 2022 08:32 (two years ago) link

I mean there are some big names on there but it's their more obscure tracks

paolo, Thursday, 31 March 2022 08:33 (two years ago) link

I appreciate your efforts to prevent Rema Rema erasure in these days of Rave & Roses

I do like Rema too. Maybe we need a TS: Rema v Rema Rema thread

paolo, Thursday, 31 March 2022 09:20 (two years ago) link

Or maybe we don't

paolo, Thursday, 31 March 2022 09:21 (two years ago) link

All of the tracks I'm familiar with on this album - maybe a bit less than half of them - are great, so it's a tough choice. Yay @ the Cabs' pick - coombackhome coombackhome coombackhome coombackhome coombackhome coombackhome coombackhome coombackhome...

AC Marias, that track is a wonder

lemmy incaution (emsworth), Thursday, 31 March 2022 10:04 (two years ago) link

I hadn't realised that A.C. Marias had been releasing music that early. Only aware of her material from the end of the decade.
Do wish I could get hold of a remastered version of One of Our Girls cos i did love that record.
looks like she was actually working with members of Wire in the early 80s not just covering them.
So need to check this earlier stuff out

I have the original version of this comp which was released in 2012 and has a slightly different track listing. The Flying Lizards aren't on it but there are tracks by This Heat and Judy Nylon.

Going to relisten before voting - most of the album available on Spotify and Apple.

Great compiler I think - just picked up his 72-76 and 77-79 doubles from Ace, which are way less at the secret end of things.

She was Bruce Gilbert's partner at the time. She has a track on the first Dome album and contributes vocals to the third album. Drop/So was a single, recorded at the 154 sessions I think? She was also a member of the one off group, P'o, with Gilbert and Lewis et al.

The AC Marias album is great but some of the drum programming dates it badly.

Alfred Ndwego of Kenya (Tom D.), Thursday, 31 March 2022 10:59 (two years ago) link

Ok so hang on..

Is this coming out to 'compete' with "Symbols Crashing Everywhere", a 'post punk' 2cd compilation put together by um hang on.....

Mark G, Sunday, 10 April 2022 12:50 (two years ago) link

AC Marias, DNA, Mars, Implog, Thomas Leer & Robert Rental and Rema Rema all vying for my vote.

gonna go... Implog

stirmonster, Sunday, 10 April 2022 13:01 (two years ago) link

symbols crashing isn't purely post-punk tho, unless post-punk includes sheila b devotion and prince far i

mark s, Sunday, 10 April 2022 13:08 (two years ago) link

Not purely, but it is a 2cd

It was the Nigel Simpkins track that made me pause ..

The AC Marias album is great but some of the drum programming dates it badly.

it does but it doesn't spoil it for me. i listened to it again an awful lot during the first lockdown and noticed it seems to have become a lot more sought after in recent times. i wonder if mute will reissue it, which reminds me that they were going to reissue Anita Lane's 'Dirty Pearl' but it has never appeared....?

stirmonster, Sunday, 10 April 2022 13:20 (two years ago) link

prince far i is a post-punk icon yet not post punk.

stirmonster, Sunday, 10 April 2022 13:24 (two years ago) link

just like me

mark s, Sunday, 10 April 2022 13:33 (two years ago) link

I'm going AC Marias because I'm a sucker for dubby post-punk

paolo, Sunday, 10 April 2022 15:03 (two years ago) link

How true xpost

Mark G, Sunday, 10 April 2022 17:05 (two years ago) link

Shall I do the killers joke now?

Right:

“I’m post punk but I’m not a punker…”

Mark G, Sunday, 10 April 2022 17:07 (two years ago) link

I was obsessed with AC Marias a few years ago even found a copy of the hard to find P’o CD.

this is an impossible choice ...

between Mars, Noh Mercy, Chrome, Leer/Rental, and Joy Division ... and DNA ... and ... this is like being shown a box of adorable kittens and being asked to pick the cutest kitten

sarahell, Sunday, 10 April 2022 17:28 (two years ago) link

I love the Urinals but this isn’t their best track

Went with Pere Ubu - absolutely love those early records and this is one of my favorites:

missed the poll. Might have voted for Rema Rema

curmudgeon, Thursday, 14 April 2022 04:01 (two years ago) link

A landslide. Heart of Darkness is one of Pere Ubu's better known tracks right?

paolo, Thursday, 14 April 2022 07:25 (two years ago) link

It's in their top ten, yeah
