People seem to like it!! Now that ILX has unanimously decided that AnCo's last few albums were the best, is this everything you were hoping for??

just read an interview with panda bear where he says his biggest musical inspiration lately is the genshin impact soundtrack. i don't hear that in the new album though

47-1/2 minutes, that’s some bullshit running time. They only did that so you can’t neatly fit it on one side of a C-90.

some of this is kinda gang gang dancey here and there

the one that's real bullshit is Strawberry Jam, which is a 2x LP despite being only 43 minutes. I guess they really wanted Reverend Green & Fireworks on the same side.

"Strung with Everything" is a highlight for me so far

I like this a lot, better than any full "studio" LP they've done in (checks calendar) a decade or so

Some of the group EPs were strong in that period though

I think mentally I’m not really in a state of anticipation for Animal Collective anymore.

I hardly ever check Pitchfork anymore as I have ILM but this did get Best New Music today

new album is surprisingly good, a real return to form. plays to all their strengths while still breaking new ground for them & it's also the best they've ever sounded production-wise.

vibes this time are 'the 70s' and 'exotica', it's very lush & loose

haven't listened to animal collection in a decade but might give this a try

i'm cracking up at how chill this is. it's like a whole album of "Bluish". I knew they had this kind of album in 'em!!

alright this was really good. idk how to compare it to their other albums cuz it's nothing like any of them but I can definitely see it becoming one of my favorites after I hear it a few times. it sounds like they took the bad reviews for Painting With to heart and made an album that was the complete opposite.

it would have been a pretty natural follow-up to mpp in a lot of ways, it's not as bright or as pop as mpp but it extends mpp's chiller moments like "bluish" and "no more runnin" into a looser, jammier sound

i think it's already up with their best for me, idk if it has the same individual highs as a lot of their work but it's better front-to-back listen than most of their albums

This album grooves in a way I don't think they ever have? I don't love every moment and as with most AC albums it is a lot to take in in one sitting, but def my favorite since MPP and probably Feels.

yeah, this is the first one since MPP that i made it all the way through and plan on listening again! i didn't dislike what they were doing for the last decade but it wasn't what i liked about them, either

they'd been indicating that was the plan for a while, before time skiffs was even announced. there's a lot of new material they've been playing live over the last few years, in addition to the time skiffs material, that's set for the next album.

on second and third and fourth impression this is definitely one of their best albums

'pastor john' is the only keeper for me i think. great song though, love the bassline so much

album still sounds great. I've listened to it a few times this week, which I usually never do with these guys. A little of 'em goes a long way.

also picked up the Bridge to Quiet EP which was released in 2020. its quite good! mostly ambient but "Piggy Knows" is really, really fucking catchy. and the title track sounds like LCD Soundsystem! kinda.

feels is their best album though and this is probably like 2nd or 3rd front-to-back

this is a pretty good epic, expected to be the first taste of a new album out at the end of the year

oh hell yeah it's *that* song, they played this in Madison and it was such a showstopper. but is there still a new album on the way or is this it?

they recorded an album at the start of last year, with all the songs they've been playing live for a while now that weren't recorded for time skiffs. "defeat" is from those sessions and avey's apparently confirmed that it will be on the album.

ah that's good to know then I don't have to track down the 12 inch

the b-side, "the challenge", is a new song that evolved out of an improvised jam leading into "strung with everything" on tour last year. they've edited together a bunch of live takes from last year for this release, it doesn't seem like it'll be on the album.

Holy shit, yeah, "Defeat" is incredible. Really looking forward to the new album now. Since Time Skiffs came out, my love for these guys has really come back.

Is the companion album to Time Skiffs?

it's songs that were written during the same period as the time skiffs material but recorded later because time skiffs was recorded remotely due to covid and they wanted to be able to jam in person to record these songs

I mean, I loved Time Skiffs a ton, but I went into it with pretty low expectations. This time I'm actually really amped for the new one.

yea when I saw them live it was pretty clear they were still full of ideas. it's kind of rare to see a band that's been around 20+ years and not be thinking "oooh I hope they play X and Y and Z", instead I was just kinda hoping to hear more weird shit. some of the older tracks they played like "Wide Eyed" sounded totally new because they were so thoroughly rearranged. so yeah high expectations for this one especially since Time Skiffs was so good. also don't sleep on the Panda Bear/Sonic Boom album from last year, it's total ear candy from start to finish. I like it about as much as Person Pitch.

Oh yeah, that Panda/Sonic album was great too. 2022 was a good year for AnCo stuff.

I trained a new college radio DJ a couple weeks back, he was prob 18, he totally knew them and his fave was Spirit!

Reset & Person Pitch are the only AnCo solo records I have. In addition to Tomboy which I just ordered. What are the other good ones? Just checked on RYM and nothing Avey's done scores well but these are the folks who saddled Painting With with a 2.7 so idk how much I trust them

I dislike most Avey solo but REALLY REALLY like Eucalyptus!

Yeah, Eucalyptus is really good.

The two tracks from this forthcoming album make me dangerously happy but also absurdly nervous, because, you guys … THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEED from this band right now.

The first three tracks on “down there” are phenomenal too, I rank Laughing Hieroglyphics as one of his best tracks, including anco material. And yeah, eucalyptus is an amazing album, though I can never get past the first LP because it’s such a cohesive package to me already. Really need to give the second part a fair chance.

the new one is the best they've ever sounded, really lovely production (courtesy of russell elevado, notable for engineering/mixing a whole lot of neo-soul albums including voodoo & black messiah)

some of the songs are quite nice as well but i haven't really wrapped my head around all of them yet

i said the same thing about the last album's production but this one's even better in that regard

i think it's just the last two tracks i don't really care for

I did not expect myself to be this excited about AnCo in 2023, but I really am.

I did laugh at the digital bonus track, a "radio edit" of "Soul Capturer" that shaves it alllll the way down to 5:44 from 6:08. I'm sure those 22 seconds were exactly what kept that from blowing up on the IHeartMedia empire.

well hold on, it could be a different cut or a different mix. I know in electronica it's not uncommon for a single version to have different elements than the album version, can def see AnCo doing something like that
