People seem to like it!! Now that ILX has unanimously decided that AnCo's last few albums were the best, is this everything you were hoping for??

frogbs, Friday, 4 February 2022 04:07 (two years ago) link

just read an interview with panda bear where he says his biggest musical inspiration lately is the genshin impact soundtrack. i don't hear that in the new album though

ufo, Friday, 4 February 2022 04:09 (two years ago) link

When is this being released?

Bee OK, Friday, 4 February 2022 04:13 (two years ago) link

tomorrow, apparently

frogbs, Friday, 4 February 2022 04:14 (two years ago) link

yes it's out now here in australia

ufo, Friday, 4 February 2022 04:14 (two years ago) link

I just looked it up, tomorrow

Not on streaming yet in the US

Bee OK, Friday, 4 February 2022 04:15 (two years ago) link

they've also recently been recording the follow-up to this which could come out this year too

Hard not to like this album, if you are a fan of the band.

nostormo, Friday, 4 February 2022 06:16 (two years ago) link

will check this, but posting to register that i thought ufo was british right up until now lol

imago, Friday, 4 February 2022 08:00 (two years ago) link

lol i've posted about being australian plenty of times

only thing i can think of that would have given you that impression is posting in the uk politics thread once or twice

ufo, Friday, 4 February 2022 08:05 (two years ago) link

47-1/2 minutes, that’s some bullshit running time. They only did that so you can’t neatly fit it on one side of a C-90.

war mice (hardcore dilettante), Friday, 4 February 2022 08:13 (two years ago) link

some of this is kinda gang gang dancey here and there

ufo, Friday, 4 February 2022 13:11 (two years ago) link

the one that's real bullshit is Strawberry Jam, which is a 2x LP despite being only 43 minutes. I guess they really wanted Reverend Green & Fireworks on the same side.

frogbs, Friday, 4 February 2022 14:37 (two years ago) link

"Strung with Everything" is a highlight for me so far

gman59, Friday, 4 February 2022 15:51 (two years ago) link

I like this a lot, better than any full "studio" LP they've done in (checks calendar) a decade or so

Some of the group EPs were strong in that period though

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 4 February 2022 16:17 (two years ago) link

wow that is an ugly cover

will def check this out tho

bad milk blood robot (sleeve), Friday, 4 February 2022 16:27 (two years ago) link

Love “Prester John” right off the bat; the rest needs time to settle in.

I think mentally I’m not really in a state of anticipation for Animal Collective anymore.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 4 February 2022 17:46 (two years ago) link

I hardly ever check Pitchfork anymore as I have ILM but this did get Best New Music today

Bee OK, Friday, 4 February 2022 19:27 (two years ago) link

Haven't listened myself yet

Bee OK, Friday, 4 February 2022 19:27 (two years ago) link

Store had it so I grabbed a copy. Should I get high before listening to it for the first time Y/N

oh this is a 45

frogbs, Saturday, 5 February 2022 03:23 (two years ago) link

We have had our first review

new album is surprisingly good, a real return to form. plays to all their strengths while still breaking new ground for them & it's also the best they've ever sounded production-wise.

vibes this time are 'the 70s' and 'exotica', it's very lush & loose

― ufo, Thursday, February 3, 2022 5:45 PM (yesterday)

Bee OK, Saturday, 5 February 2022 03:29 (two years ago) link

oooh yeah. the production on this is ace. such a wide-open sound.

spaced out hard during "Prester John" and thought I was listening to Yes lmao

frogbs, Saturday, 5 February 2022 03:35 (two years ago) link

yo this is really fuckin good, already listened twice

bad milk blood robot (sleeve), Saturday, 5 February 2022 03:39 (two years ago) link

my fave since Feels or the EP w/Vashti, whichever is more recent

bad milk blood robot (sleeve), Saturday, 5 February 2022 03:39 (two years ago) link

haven't listened to animal collection in a decade but might give this a try

ciderpress, Saturday, 5 February 2022 03:40 (two years ago) link

i'm cracking up at how chill this is. it's like a whole album of "Bluish". I knew they had this kind of album in 'em!!

frogbs, Saturday, 5 February 2022 03:53 (two years ago) link

alright this was really good. idk how to compare it to their other albums cuz it's nothing like any of them but I can definitely see it becoming one of my favorites after I hear it a few times. it sounds like they took the bad reviews for Painting With to heart and made an album that was the complete opposite.

frogbs, Saturday, 5 February 2022 04:13 (two years ago) link

it would have been a pretty natural follow-up to mpp in a lot of ways, it's not as bright or as pop as mpp but it extends mpp's chiller moments like "bluish" and "no more runnin" into a looser, jammier sound

ufo, Saturday, 5 February 2022 04:30 (two years ago) link

i think it's already up with their best for me, idk if it has the same individual highs as a lot of their work but it's better front-to-back listen than most of their albums

ufo, Saturday, 5 February 2022 04:31 (two years ago) link

This album grooves in a way I don't think they ever have? I don't love every moment and as with most AC albums it is a lot to take in in one sitting, but def my favorite since MPP and probably Feels.

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Monday, 7 February 2022 14:41 (two years ago) link

yeah, this is the first one since MPP that i made it all the way through and plan on listening again! i didn't dislike what they were doing for the last decade but it wasn't what i liked about them, either

Karl Malone, Monday, 7 February 2022 14:47 (two years ago) link

follow-up is finished and tentatively planned for early next year

ufo, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 02:33 (two years ago) link

?!?!

bad milk blood robot (sleeve), Wednesday, 9 February 2022 02:47 (two years ago) link

they'd been indicating that was the plan for a while, before time skiffs was even announced. there's a lot of new material they've been playing live over the last few years, in addition to the time skiffs material, that's set for the next album.

ufo, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 02:51 (two years ago) link

Poor Josh, people still getting his last name wrong.

mizzell, Wednesday, 9 February 2022 03:14 (two years ago) link

on second and third and fourth impression this is definitely one of their best albums

frogbs, Saturday, 19 February 2022 05:39 (two years ago) link

'pastor john' is the only keeper for me i think. great song though, love the bassline so much

flopson, Saturday, 19 February 2022 07:57 (two years ago) link

three weeks pass...

album still sounds great. I've listened to it a few times this week, which I usually never do with these guys. A little of 'em goes a long way.

also picked up the Bridge to Quiet EP which was released in 2020. its quite good! mostly ambient but "Piggy Knows" is really, really fucking catchy. and the title track sounds like LCD Soundsystem! kinda.

― ufo, Friday, February 4, 2022 11:31 PM (nine months ago) bookmarkflaglink

it's nowhere near as good as feels

flopson, Friday, 4 November 2022 07:46 (one year ago) link

feels is their best album though and this is probably like 2nd or 3rd front-to-back

ufo, Friday, 4 November 2022 09:20 (one year ago) link

yah they hit on a mature version of their classic sound that accentuates their eccentricity without the things that can make them…well, annoying

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Friday, 4 November 2022 12:02 (one year ago) link

yeah exactly

ufo, Friday, 4 November 2022 12:28 (one year ago) link

this is a pretty good epic, expected to be the first taste of a new album out at the end of the year

ufo, Monday, 26 June 2023 23:19 (ten months ago) link

oh hell yeah it's *that* song, they played this in Madison and it was such a showstopper. but is there still a new album on the way or is this it?

frogbs, Tuesday, 27 June 2023 02:27 (ten months ago) link

they recorded an album at the start of last year, with all the songs they've been playing live for a while now that weren't recorded for time skiffs. "defeat" is from those sessions and avey's apparently confirmed that it will be on the album.

ufo, Tuesday, 27 June 2023 02:50 (ten months ago) link

ah that's good to know then I don't have to track down the 12 inch

frogbs, Tuesday, 27 June 2023 02:54 (ten months ago) link

the b-side, "the challenge", is a new song that evolved out of an improvised jam leading into "strung with everything" on tour last year. they've edited together a bunch of live takes from last year for this release, it doesn't seem like it'll be on the album.

ufo, Tuesday, 27 June 2023 03:01 (ten months ago) link

Holy shit, yeah, "Defeat" is incredible. Really looking forward to the new album now. Since Time Skiffs came out, my love for these guys has really come back.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 27 June 2023 16:11 (ten months ago) link

new album Isn't It Now? apparently coming Sept 28. tracklist seems to be:

1) Soul Capturer
2) Genie's Open
3) Broke Zodiac
4) Magicians from Baltimore
5) Defeat
6) Gem & I
7) Stride Rite
8) All the Clubs are Broken
9) King's Walk

frogbs, Monday, 24 July 2023 18:42 (nine months ago) link

Haven't been this excited for a new AnCo album in a long time, tbh

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 24 July 2023 18:44 (nine months ago) link

remember really loving all these new songs live but I never went back to relisten so I wonder if I'll even remember them. outside of "Defeat" which I definitely will

frogbs, Monday, 24 July 2023 19:00 (nine months ago) link

Is the companion album to Time Skiffs?

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 24 July 2023 20:24 (nine months ago) link

it's songs that were written during the same period as the time skiffs material but recorded later because time skiffs was recorded remotely due to covid and they wanted to be able to jam in person to record these songs

ufo, Monday, 24 July 2023 20:55 (nine months ago) link

Haven't been this excited for a new AnCo album in a long time, tbh

same!

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Thursday, 27 July 2023 14:42 (nine months ago) link

"Soul Capturer" is great, can't wait to hear the full version.

I mean, I loved Time Skiffs a ton, but I went into it with pretty low expectations. This time I'm actually really amped for the new one.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 27 July 2023 14:45 (nine months ago) link

yea when I saw them live it was pretty clear they were still full of ideas. it's kind of rare to see a band that's been around 20+ years and not be thinking "oooh I hope they play X and Y and Z", instead I was just kinda hoping to hear more weird shit. some of the older tracks they played like "Wide Eyed" sounded totally new because they were so thoroughly rearranged. so yeah high expectations for this one especially since Time Skiffs was so good. also don't sleep on the Panda Bear/Sonic Boom album from last year, it's total ear candy from start to finish. I like it about as much as Person Pitch.

frogbs, Thursday, 27 July 2023 15:46 (nine months ago) link

Oh yeah, that Panda/Sonic album was great too. 2022 was a good year for AnCo stuff.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 27 July 2023 15:53 (nine months ago) link

I trained a new college radio DJ a couple weeks back, he was prob 18, he totally knew them and his fave was Spirit!

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Thursday, 27 July 2023 15:53 (nine months ago) link

Reset & Person Pitch are the only AnCo solo records I have. In addition to Tomboy which I just ordered. What are the other good ones? Just checked on RYM and nothing Avey's done scores well but these are the folks who saddled Painting With with a 2.7 so idk how much I trust them

frogbs, Thursday, 27 July 2023 18:59 (nine months ago) link

I dislike most Avey solo but REALLY REALLY like Eucalyptus!

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Thursday, 27 July 2023 19:27 (nine months ago) link

Yeah, Eucalyptus is really good.

Frederik B, Thursday, 27 July 2023 20:00 (nine months ago) link

The two tracks from this forthcoming album make me dangerously happy but also absurdly nervous, because, you guys … THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEED from this band right now.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 27 July 2023 20:24 (nine months ago) link

Also do not sleep on the Deakin record

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 27 July 2023 20:27 (nine months ago) link

I don’t love a lot of Panda Bear albums front to back but if he ever does a best of, it’s gonna be a home run.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 27 July 2023 20:29 (nine months ago) link

ooh yeah, forgot about the Deakin record, I've heard good things

frogbs, Thursday, 27 July 2023 20:37 (nine months ago) link

The first three tracks on “down there” are phenomenal too, I rank Laughing Hieroglyphics as one of his best tracks, including anco material. And yeah, eucalyptus is an amazing album, though I can never get past the first LP because it’s such a cohesive package to me already. Really need to give the second part a fair chance.

hrep (H.P), Friday, 28 July 2023 00:25 (nine months ago) link

one month passes...

the new one is the best they've ever sounded, really lovely production (courtesy of russell elevado, notable for engineering/mixing a whole lot of neo-soul albums including voodoo & black messiah)

some of the songs are quite nice as well but i haven't really wrapped my head around all of them yet

ufo, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 06:07 (eight months ago) link

i said the same thing about the last album's production but this one's even better in that regard

ufo, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 06:11 (eight months ago) link

i think it's just the last two tracks i don't really care for

ufo, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 06:31 (eight months ago) link

wow, release date is Sept 29, did this leak already?

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 13:49 (eight months ago) link

yeah RYM already going bonkers over it

i'll be good and wait though

frogbs, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 14:17 (eight months ago) link

I did not expect myself to be this excited about AnCo in 2023, but I really am.

I did laugh at the digital bonus track, a "radio edit" of "Soul Capturer" that shaves it alllll the way down to 5:44 from 6:08. I'm sure those 22 seconds were exactly what kept that from blowing up on the IHeartMedia empire.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 16:41 (eight months ago) link

sorry my bad, "single version" not "radio edit", but still

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 16:42 (eight months ago) link

well hold on, it could be a different cut or a different mix. I know in electronica it's not uncommon for a single version to have different elements than the album version, can def see AnCo doing something like that

frogbs, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 17:04 (eight months ago) link

ha, that's true, i just thought it was funny to see the timings

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 17:08 (eight months ago) link

it just cuts off ~20 seconds of ambience from the start of the track lol

ufo, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 21:50 (eight months ago) link

lol, top of the pops here we come!

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 21:55 (eight months ago) link

I heard it on WFMU this morning!

mizzell, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 22:48 (eight months ago) link

If you're gonna have a hit you gotta make it fit
So they cut it down to 5:44

Vinnie, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 23:48 (eight months ago) link

hahah ok then
