Music that rocks in 2022

let's try something - this is a thread for new music that rocks. TO BE TOTALLY CLEAR: this is a genre-agnostic definition of "music that rocks." this is not necessarily music with guitars and acoustic drums. it is music that when you hear it, you think "this rocks." to me, that is music that gives you a jolt of energy, makes your pulse quicken, etc. but whatever new music makes you think "hell yeah this rocks," please post it on this thread.

does music rock in 2022?

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 16:43 (six months ago) link

came out at the end of 2021, but I'm still basking in just how much the latest Mastodon album ROCKS

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 1 February 2022 16:44 (six months ago) link

that's what this thread is a reaction to tbh, how much new music is chill and vibey etc., WHICH IS FINE, but it seems like there also has to be new music out there that's about energy/aggression/rocking that i'm missing out on

music that rocks in 2022: is it a vibe?

There are two kinds of people in the world, vibers and rockers

cool thread idea

tha retail simps - love without friction

i'm betraying the concept of the thread by posting something that is very traditional guitar and drums and retro rock n roll but i'm anticipating this 2022 rock record

tanya tagaq - colonizer

i never got into her previous music but this new song is pretty rocking imho. like suicide but with with extremely guttural inuit throat singing. there's not really any release which makes it somewhat less rocking, but it is pummelling and aggressive

boris - the fallen

the new boris album is mostly (excellent) non-rocking post-rock, drone, shoegaze and slowcore, but this is the one super rocking song on it

wu lu - broken homes

this guy's signed to warp and most of his stuff is warp-style idm. afaik this is the only song of his so far that sounds like this, kind of birthday party-ish dreadrock with a great bassline. really hope he makes more in this style

flopson, Tuesday, 1 February 2022 17:35 (six months ago) link

The most rockin' metal band I've heard in a long time is Maule. They're like a cross between early Iron Maiden and early (pre-Rick Rubin) Slayer, and their album is amazing.

la colonie de vacances - ECHT

french band with 12 members (including what looks like four drummers) doing proggy math-rock

I don't love this thread title at all but appreciate the concept.

Anyway this came out less than 2 months ago and it sounds like Bleach & Local H:

xp Wu-Lu is great. This one track "Times" has the Black Midi drummer:

billstevejim, Tuesday, 1 February 2022 21:18 (six months ago) link

A little background on La Colonie de Vacances: it came to life when 4 French indie bands (Pneu, Marvin, Papier Tigre and Electric Electric) made a tour together a few years ago. On one of the shows (I happened to be there when I lived in Tours) they had the four bands playing in each corner of the stage, and it was so much fun that they made it project of its own.

Lol sorry about my dick comment. I unwittingly absorbed ILM's stigma against usage of "rocks" a long while back and look where it got me.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 1 February 2022 23:20 (six months ago) link

Definitely doesn't rock rock, but I really enjoyed listening to this spooky, synthy sci-fi audio play.

Haven't heard much 2022 music yet, but the new Garcia Peoples definitely rocks at times. It also vibes and boogies and other similar actions.

be forewarned that this "rocks" in the indie rock/post-punk sense, but I like this album by Swedish band Levande Dod. kinda Feelies-y, kinda Chronophage-y

this album starts off like it vibes and chills but give it a minute - track 3 is maybe peak 'rocks':

i like this Irish band called Sprints, doing the talk-sing post-punk thing but with a lot more emphasis on the punk than most of these bands:

On 1st listen, I'm actually liking the 3rd Secret song, featuring Krist Novoselic, Matt Cameron, Kim Thayil, and Bubba Dupree with two female vocalists (Jillian Raye and Jennifer Johnson). A bit Heron Oblivion.

And liberty she pirouette (Sund4r), Thursday, 14 April 2022 15:30 (four months ago) link

This Generacion Suicida performance gets me, such a great mix of punk, HC, gothy bits and just looking badass.

Rocks like early Incubus & sElF

the 90s-ness of Milly and Momma is really something to behold. i was familiar with tony molina so his 90s-ness is less striking.

Perhaps more specifically Chicago 1994.

I might be wrong but I believe a member from each of those bands (Momma and Milly) plays on this:

lotta discourse out there about the chat pile album. i'm here with the firm stance that ... it is good

na (NA), Thursday, 4 August 2022 16:16 (one week ago) link

i like how embarrassingly direct and emotional a lot of the lyrics are, it comes across as distasteful when most music is too tasteful, though this seems to be the sticking point for a lot of listeners (specifically the song "why")

na (NA), Thursday, 4 August 2022 16:18 (one week ago) link

drum production is very shitty in a good way

fun and fucked up in equal measure, v difficult balance to maintain

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 4 August 2022 18:35 (one week ago) link

I love it, too, and for me “Why” is the stand out track. I love how direct the lyrics are. The words are so perfectly chosen and delivered.

beard papa, Thursday, 4 August 2022 21:08 (one week ago) link

Still waiting for my copy to get here, just got caught up with the comp of their two EPs. It's set my expectations for the full-length very high, "Rainbow Meat" is like the platonic ideal of my favorite kind of noise rock song, completely unhinged and off-putting but also deeply hilarious.

Somewhere between Scratch Acid, Pissed Jeans and S/T era Daughters is where Chat Pile sits for me. They do simple but powerful so well. “Why” is just the latest example but “Crawlspace” hit me in a similar way. Really great band.

i love the killdozer/laughing hyenas era butch viggish production, everything sounds so textured and tactile.

xp - Yeah "Crawlspace" is a great track too.

Current favorite is "grimace_smoking_weed.jpeg"

billstevejim, Saturday, 6 August 2022 04:10 (one week ago) link

Thanks for the tip on Momma slightly upthread. That nails a certain 90s vibe better than just about anything I've heard. Love the newest album.

doomposting is the new composting (PBKR), Monday, 8 August 2022 12:09 (one week ago) link

Yeah, that Momma track is truly uncanny in how anachronistic it feels. Though the production is maybe a bit more 2020s hi-fi. Also one hell of an earworm, been stuck in my head for days.

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Thursday, 11 August 2022 17:02 (five days ago) link

grimace_smoking_weed.jpeg is fantastic but really haunting. also, good call on the Killdozer/vig production comparison. Still a bit surprised they have been getting so much more love than say the Bummer album from last year or pretty much every Pissed Jeans record, but I'm glad. Might also be timing, people being ground down, wanting some authentic noise and angry punk
