Your mission, if you choose to accept it:
Construct a hypothetical Shibuya-Kei J-Pop/J-Rock mixtape that will win over a clueless gaijin raised on indie/shoegaze/hardcore punk/goth/metal/new-wave.

This post will explode in 10 seconds...

LCO, do you want a mixtape of indie j-pop, or as the call it in Japan, indies (which I can do)-- or mainstream j-pop (which I cannot)?

g (graysonlane), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 22:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

just school me on japanese muzik. use whatever definition you want for "japanese muzik."
I'm sure theres somebody else out there who can cover the mainstream j-pop.
Siegbran: if you're out there and know of any j-metal, school us all.

the Sushi 3003 and Sushi 4004 should be a good introduction. that and as much Pizzicato Five as your little otaku head can handle.

Some picks from the obvious big-in-America Shibuya stuff:

Kahimi Karie - Good Morning World
Pizzicato Five - It's a Beautiful Day
Buffalo Daughter - Socks, Drugs, and Rock'n'Roll
Seagulls Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her - Angel
Cornelius - The Sun is My Enemy, Mic Check, New Music Machine and Magoo Opening
Fantastic Plastic Machine - I think it was "Please, Stop!" that I liked so much, but I could be completely wrong

Ha, now that I'm pimping Cornelius I'm listening to First Question Award and "Silent Snow Stream" is great as well. I don't know if the pre-Fantasma stuff ever got released in the U.S., but I must have found an import somewhere, and I'm pretty pathetic about finding anything hard-to-get. (Fantasma is fantastic, but if you're looking for more centrally "Shibuya-kei" stuff I think records like 96/69 and First Question are a lot closer to its heart.)

Not exclusively "Shibuya-Kei" but...

Supercar - Especially "High Vision", the last record

Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra- fun, fun and more fun!

OOIOO - led by the Boredoms' Yoshimi, 4 cute girls who don't suck!

Mo'Some Tonebender - these guys have a lot of Pixies albums at home

Mad Capsule Markets - This band rocks HARD!

Cornelius - Fuji Rock Festival highlight
