It took me thirty years to get around to hearing this surprisingly solid compilation. Lots of good versions on here, what's your favorite?

Damn, the only one of these I was interested in at the time was Jane's Addiction's Ripple, which is fucking great. But I remember just fast-forwarding to the end, taping it, and being done with it. All of the others were firmly categorized under "old person music" to me. I'll have to give some of those a listen before voting.

There is definitely a heavy of it's time, WXRT, adult alternative vibe to the artists, but it holds up really well. I really like the Dwight Yoakam, Los Lobos, Lovett, Burning Spear and Suzanne Vega tracks. The only one I really outright hate is the Midnight Oil take on "Wharf Rat".

I heard this record before I actually heard any of the originals due to a friend whose brother was a diehard Jane's Addiction completeist. That friend was a huge Lyle Lovett fan and I remember how angry he got when he heard the much more uptempo original version of Friend of the Devil.

I honestly don't know what I'd vote for here, but this reminds me how much I dislike Midnight Oil.

Playing it again this morning and that Midnight Oil track is such a sore thumb, a bad song and just a complete misreading of what makes "Wharf Rat" a powerful song.

My top five are probably - Los Lobos, Yoakam, Jane's, Lovett and Burning Spear. Los Lobos do a really good job of capturing how rollicking "Bertha" is, something I don't think even the Dead themselves always nailed, a victim of being a longtime go-to wore off some of its charms.

they're not the only good tracks, but i think this one comes down to Lyle Lovett vs Jane's Addiction

I definitely heard the Burning Spear before the original, in my avoiding the Dead years. I’ve still never heard the rest of this.

Played this again over the weekend and honestly impressed that it's held up way better than I ever would have imagined.

Hahaha this thing was about 80% of XRT’s playlist when it came out. The Lovett, Yoakam, and Los Lobos tracks got the most airplay. In Midnight Oil’s defense, they initially turned down the project, since they weren’t fans of, or familiar with, the Dead. But they relented, supposedly in the interests of continued support from their label.

Did a search for this album and saw quite a few mentions, so I hoped this poll might get better traction. Ah well.
