best out of the current-ish crop of post-punk bands people and algorithms keep telling you to listen to

most of them off the top of my head, but a couple extras I yanked from spotify playlists and a couple (girl friday, goat girl, metz) that are stretching the definition a teensy bit but it's fine cause they're cool and good. amyl and the sniffers are pretty much just punk rock but they're pretty tied into a couple bands here so they get to join the party. iceage and protomartyr have been around a minute but have really had an uptick in the last couple years so they get to hang too.

for bonus points figure out which one I made up. sorry if I missed anyone obvious

also it's kinda fuckin....eyebrow raising that algiers aren't on spotify's big post-punk playlist cause their "fans also like" artists are....preoccupations, iceage, girl band, hmltd, shame, and protomartyr lol

Protomartyr - honorable mention to Slum of Legs, Metz, & TFS.

BlackIronPrison, Thursday, 25 February 2021 04:34 (one month ago) link

halfway through the HMLTD and can't tell if this is terrible or kind of compellingly wacky, but I think it's probably the former

stimmy stimmy yah (Simon H.), Thursday, 25 February 2021 04:39 (one month ago) link

Have enjoyed: Girl Friday, Goat Girl, Protomartyr, Iceage, Slum of Legs. I'd say Girl Friday take it on "Decoration/Currency" alone but wasn't too sure about last year's album, I should try it again.

of these Viagra Boys, Dry Cleaning at the top

Priests (RIP), Lithics, Nots would be in the running if listed

I saw Protomartyr before they caught any buzz, they sounded like a photocopy of Interpol then. Have struggled to give them a fair shot since.

Joe Biden Stan Account (milo z), Thursday, 25 February 2021 07:11 (one month ago) link

good poll, but no one is out there saying "listen to preoccupations" i don't think

which is too bad, they may be the best of this bunch

Lithics is a good call

Sweeping Promises, too

wish Flasher would re-emerge

I like a good bunch of the bands in this list.

The one Squid song I’ve heard (“Narrator”) bodes really well for their album coming out on Warp. It starts out like a facsimile of Pop Group or maybe more the Rapture, but it starts melting into something quite different a few minutes in.

Party With A Jagger Ban (dog latin), Thursday, 25 February 2021 08:38 (one month ago) link

So much genuinely terrible music in this poll

Slum Of Legs genuinely in the top 3 here but had to vote TFS

good poll, but no one is out there saying "listen to preoccupations" i don't think

no but algorithms are! they show up in recommendations/"if you like [this] try preoccupations!" pretty much constantly. I like them (they have a few *great* songs) but I still think of them as the meat-and-potatoes version of Women

stimmy stimmy yah (Simon H.), Thursday, 25 February 2021 13:19 (one month ago) link

TFS, Slum of Legs, Iceage and Protomartyr would be my top 4. It’s a toss-up between the first two.

I saw the show where they didn't have a name, we'd gotten tickets then the thing blew up and the hmong student association at the university of mn was going to picket it, they had already announced that they were doing away with the name but hadn't gotten a new one yet so the whole vibe was really weird

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 25 February 2021 15:59 (one month ago) link

Voted Tropical Fuck Storm with Fontaines DC as runner up, but lots of these are very good - most recently was checking out Dry Cleaning and am on the fence about the sprake/sing vibe but the music is top notch.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 25 February 2021 16:06 (one month ago) link

I confess I don't get shame, idles or fontaines dc at all. fat white family have an incredibly off-putting name but I enjoy their absurd beefs (I honestly wish bands would start more beefs) and a few of their songs

I've listened the most to Black Midi and they're the only one I've seen, so voted for them. They're soooo young though, I feel like they're either going to become something amazing or break up and do other things.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 25 February 2021 16:12 (one month ago) link

of these bands I've seen black midi, protomartyr, algiers, tropical fuck storm, iceage and metz live - none improved on their studio work, tbh, except for metz. watching franklin play and sing in algiers was thrilling but unfortunately his voice was pretty shot by the time they got here.

stimmy stimmy yah (Simon H.), Thursday, 25 February 2021 16:17 (one month ago) link

black midi are undeniably extremely talented lads but I agree w/ yr sense, Jordan, that their best work is still to come in one form or another

i like some of these bands quite a bit but there’s something about just about all of them (and they do have a pretty consistent sound right?) that i can’t describe but that is missing some crucial ingredient that makes a lot of the early post punk records pop to me. feels a bit rigid and texturally less raw or something

flopson, Thursday, 25 February 2021 16:21 (one month ago) link

great list of all-time terrible band names

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 25 February 2021 16:24 (one month ago) link

I feel like this list kinda covers the "dudely post-punk with press attention" more than the viciously feminist/queercore underground stuff? Surprised Crack Cloud aren't on here, tbh (a band I do not dislike but find it a bit bewildering how loved they are as everything is so smooooooth and perfectly rendered).

emil.y, Thursday, 25 February 2021 16:25 (one month ago) link

i feel like band name and quality of music are actually inversely related here lol

Metz is a weird inclusion here? post-grungey band on subpop and their debut was 9 years ago...
I guess Ice Age fit the sound somewhat too, but again their debut was a decade ago.

Viagra Boys are a lot of fun live, but both live and on record i'm still just wishing it was some new Pissed Jeans

imago, Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:48 (one week ago) link

They’re as post-punk as Idles, which is to say not much but they have elements (groove, MES sprechsang-y bits) that aren’t just ‘punk.’

Joe Bombin (milo z), Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:49 (one week ago) link

I would err toward the broad church when it comes to a genre that fundamentally just means ‘came after the first half of 1978 or so.’

Joe Bombin (milo z), Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:52 (one week ago) link

Not knocking The Chats here (though I'm not into it enough to make it through a whole album, I still get 'Smoko' stuck in my head every now and again), just can't see a world in which they belong to the genre of post-punk, as elastic as that genre might be. It just feels like it doesn't suit either the music or their own intentions.

emil.y, Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:55 (one week ago) link

I also endorse Brute Heart, they were great.

I think “Welfare Jazz” was referring to some Swedish program to provide funding for musicians that was oriented towards classy/respectable styles of music.
