TRESOR has two albums coming out this year in two more-or-less distinct genres, and I need a thread to do some anticipating.
You may recall the name from this achingly gorgeous jazzy house number from 2019, Sondela:
That was a single from his largely correctly titled album Nostalgia, which played around with different elements of 80s afropop and is mostly fantastic.
On to the future. His first 2021 release is, somewhat surprisingly, set to be an amapiano album called Rumble in the Jungle, produced by breastcrawl faves Kabza de Small and DJ Maphorisa aka the Scorpion Kings.
The first single is Funu, the radio edit of which now has a video (ofc real heads will want all 7:22 of shakers and beeps):
That's coming out on Feb 26. In April we're getting Motion, which looks to be a more direct follow up to Nostalgia in its fusion of classic afropop sounds with warm & breezy pop house.
Dancing with the Moon
Zwakala (which has a very uh striking video that I personally don't recommend watching for your first experience of the song)
^listening to that now I realize it has some strong amapiano influences, though I really love the sophisticated pop touches (there's some absolutely dazzling choral layering toward the end) that aren't usually a feature of the rawer 'piano bangers.
His biography is pretty amazing too (orphaned Congolese refugee in Durban), but I'm having trouble finding a good interview to link.

there’s always the world’s most trusted news source:https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/18/africa/african-voices-tresor-music-journey-spc-intl/index.html(read more: How South Africa became the center of the house music world)anyway, cool thread!very curious about the Tresor x Kabza x Maphorisa project. “Rumble in the Jungle” tho?

thanks for the link! that was much better than expected from CNN
Rumble in the Jungle = I assume a reference to the Foreman-Ali fight in Kinshasa? two heavyweights, etc.

there's no other origin to that phrase is there?

Not to my knowledge, though given its historical weight I think it would be hard to figure that out

ah sure, Tresor being from DRC and him and KdS and djM being... three heavyweights, makes kinda sense. didn’t make that connection, I found the “jungle” thing a bit o_O

I get that and the fact it's three people not two does make it a little strained lol.
there was also the amazing Zaire 74 concert that preceded the fight, so maybe they wanted to invoke the entire pan-African good vibes + historic meeting of musical and athletic giants shebang

from that project with Kabza and Maphorisa.it’s an ode to Sade, as the title “Folasade” suggests

ooh thanks for posting that. I got sad the album was bumped to April and stopped following developments (oh look, it's almost April!)

at a crisp 98 minutes this is going to take a while to fully digest, but on first contact it's as gorgeous as I hoped. Listening to "Soro" right now, which is superb

oh wow "Dust in the Wind" is a whole journey—I had to keep checking it was the same track
and now "Angelina" has an organ solo following a vibraphone solo, this album is going to be amazing isn't it

btw Motion has a June 25 release date now. I was bummed when RITJ was moved, but I'm pretty into how well this fits the spring weather after all

wow, this is brilliant. "La Vie Est Belle", "Mali Mali", "Limbisa Nga", plus "Starry Night" (and "Love Like A Weapon" in its wake), where Kabza is finally going full "Ilog Drum" on Tresor and us, spoke to me most on the first pass, none of the ones rob mentions did funnily enough. but listening to it again, this time on headphones (and while *not* working) this is liquid gold. every track sounds great, even the corny lyrics in "Dust In The Wind", which took me out of it earlier, became just that: dust in the wind.
"La Vie Est Belle" is the one tho:

and yes, Tresor's voice...

it's all really pleasant but has the classic amapiano album problem of being really so much to digest all at once, will take quite a few listens to wrap my head around

none of the ones rob mentions did funnily enough.
Oh that's not surprising at all! Sorry for boring detail here but: I'd listened to the first four tracks the night before and was just picking up where I left off and live-appreciating each track in order. I have no idea what the highlights are yet tbh—in fact "Funu" stood out the most at first, simply because I already loved it.
Also, part of the "journey" of Dust for me was it initially presenting as a very syrupy pop song but then blossoming into something more surprising, a good example of the length being made good use of rather than being a genre requirement.

"La vie est belle" est tellement beau, c'est vrai
― rob, Saturday, 10 April 2021 13:27 (five days ago) link
Just a random detail I'm enjoying at present: the dog bark (?) that becomes prominent for a spell in Folasade's outro
