I'm tempted to revisit them all in the coming weeks, so why not poll 'em as well?

pomenitul, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:51 (three years ago) link

I love a lot of these but didn't hesitate before voting SAW 85-92, which comprises some of my favorite music ever made by anyone. SAWII does too, but not as much.

I think I've listened to Syro the most.

RDJ album warped my brain as a teenager so I might have to pick that. But I’m starting to think drukqs is his most consistently satisfying.

ICBYD
RDJ

The the rest is a bit of a jumble.

It's there.

The Drukqs love here is a bit perplexing. I like it - well, I like a lot of it - but it wouldn't even crack my top 5, and I was always under the impression it wasn't especially well received upon release

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 4 February 2021 00:53 (three years ago) link

It's not my favorite record of his, but in a way, Windowlicker felt like the end of music for several years after its release.

Windowlicker calls to me.

Psychocandy Apple Grey (Pyschocandles), Thursday, 4 February 2021 00:59 (three years ago) link

I've warmed up to drukqs in the intervening years but have never completely overcome the sheer disappointment I felt back in 2001, a mere few months after I discovered Afx's music (via the 'Windowlicker' and 'Come to Daddy' videos that occasionally popped up on MusiquePlus, Quebec's now defunct answer to Much Music aka Canadian MTV).

pomenitul, Thursday, 4 February 2021 01:00 (three years ago) link

Windowlicker covers a lot of ground in just three tracks, none quite in a style he had done before or would do again.

Party With A Jagger Ban (dog latin), Thursday, 4 February 2021 01:02 (three years ago) link

Speaking of which, that French-Canadian accented talk of dog croquettes in 'Windowlicker' is one of my favourite things about it. I think he got his then-girlfriend to utter that line ('j'aime faire des croquettes au chien')?

pomenitul, Thursday, 4 February 2021 01:03 (three years ago) link

Pomenitul, try these alternative druqks sequences I experimented with. Makes more sense to me like this:

1. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5ottxyuqVttiufuAQvygva?si=frA7GpkIT9uq4OCIAy_Fgg

2. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5T1VrMYGtIzkbGswl4KZFA?si=azMIW3NDTqyTOG1GzZanRg

Party With A Jagger Ban (dog latin), Thursday, 4 February 2021 01:03 (three years ago) link

Between 'I like to make nuggets for the dog' and 'I like to make dog nuggets', the latter reading strikes me as most appropriate.

xp cool, thanks, will try them soon.

pomenitul, Thursday, 4 February 2021 01:04 (three years ago) link

I hear it as "Je vais faire.." but same difference. Similar to Autechre's "Is it washable?"

Party With A Jagger Ban (dog latin), Thursday, 4 February 2021 01:05 (three years ago) link

Oh no I'm thinking being of potato croquettes

Party With A Jagger Ban (dog latin), Thursday, 4 February 2021 01:06 (three years ago) link

Being? Oh man I need to go to bed

Party With A Jagger Ban (dog latin), Thursday, 4 February 2021 01:06 (three years ago) link

There are chocolaty croquettes, but less so in Quebec ime, where it's usually fried breadcrumb rolls with a savoury filling. McNuggets are called 'McCroquettes', for instance. And it can also refer to dog/cat biscuits, yeah, which is what's most relevant here.

It could well be 'je vais faire' btw. I've never managed to make it out 100%.

pomenitul, Thursday, 4 February 2021 01:10 (three years ago) link

I loved getting croquettes from the automats in amsterdam

brimstead, Thursday, 4 February 2021 02:26 (three years ago) link

hell yeah

i doubt i'll come up with anything better than that, but i love any excuse to revisit and do some really intelligent but also danceable music thinking about these, do a little braindance and see which ones come out on top

I honestly think Drukqs is a great album, I remember buying it at the time and being puzzled at how it got panned. In the end I had to pick SAW II though, because it is such a strange and unique album.

yeah I had this feeling too

frogbs, Thursday, 4 February 2021 22:09 (three years ago) link

I wish I could just get over myself and do a deep dive into his post-Druqks material without mentally placing it in the context of his nineties stuff.

Doesn't help that a lot of it is archived in either massive volumes (Analords, Soundcloud dump) or short, disjointed EPs, with not all of it being immediately and handily accessible online.

The main problem though is the nagging feeling that it couldn't possibly move me in the same way his early stuff did when I was first getting into it

Party With A Jagger Ban (dog latin), Thursday, 4 February 2021 22:25 (three years ago) link

it feels so wrong to vote SAW II, but in the end i had to

The first two tracks on Syro are great and the last one is nice too, never got into the middle ones as much. They feel a bit overworked to me.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Sunday, 28 February 2021 00:01 (three years ago) link

Feel like digging up that thread that asks "what is the best 4 lp run by any artist" and seeing if SAW II -> ICBYD -> TRDJA -> C2D is in there, which is one of the most diverse sequence of 4 megaclassics I can think of. Of those, I care takes it for me because it feels still unreplicated by anyone else, the cheesy and elegiac showing you their lovely little home in a geometrically impossible house with murderous thugs bursting from the closet and drugged out zombies chained in the attic. It feels in parts more like a real rock record than any other "electronic" record I think I've heard, very organic and a bit ramshackle, then goes into full minimalist techno mode but then randomly goth sounding or sabotaging the driving rhythms by stripping out the bass or slowing the tempo a tad halfway through the song. But all of those 4 albums tower above Aphex's peers, much as I love individual tracks by Squarepusher and plenty of Autechre cds. (Yes C2D is an album not an extended play single by any reasonable measure, whatever people like Stereolab and Autechre think).
