I'd put him in my top 5 without hesitation.

I didn't return to the last ATG after one listen, as it didn't catch me, but this one is pretty good so far.

Max Cavalera has a new band, Go Ahead And Die, with his son Igor and Khemmis's Zach Coleman on drums. The self-titled debut comes out June 11; it's primitive, crudely produced caveman thrash. Some of you may like it better than anything he's done since Arise. I still say Cavalera Conspiracy are a great band, particularly on their last two albums, but this is really good, too.

good call I like this. the production is definitely more lo-fi than you'd be used to with his other stuff, and I think that's due to his son's desires probably. this definitely draws from a lot of 80s grimy extreme metal as well. definitely a lot of punk but it doesn't really feel like crossover.

no guitar solos anywhere.

I can get the vinyl hype, okay, but cassettes? Meh. (Not only is there a 9-release cassette box (and a new release) by Mesarthim, there's also this, by Austere: http://www.depthsofvoid.com/products/706069-austere-cassette-collection-3-tape-box )

StanM, Monday, 5 July 2021 15:29 (two years ago) link

I loved cassettes, back when I owned a cassette player that I used on a daily basis. But I just did a quick search and could only find one major brand cassette player — an ugly boombox:

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81OaqdwzkqL.jpg

Everything else I saw was from some company I've never heard of and would probably last a month. No thanks.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 5 July 2021 15:46 (two years ago) link

Even that one probably isn’t up to much from a technical standpoint; Techmoan on YouTube has done multiple videos about the quality of contemporary cassette tape player mechanisms.

after about 5 plays in that, you'll be getting the Chopped n Skrewed metal experience, and then the "lol i ate ur tape' experience

are pencils coming back too? (how else are we going to rewind the loose tape?)

StanM, Monday, 5 July 2021 17:21 (two years ago) link

how else are we going to rewind the loose tape?

Bic biros were always better for that, almost as if they were designed for the job.

also, you can get truly excellent, often mint tape players on eBay, it's a buyer's market. if you were feeling completely bonkers you could get a two-owner nakamichi dragon (generally considered the highest point of technical excellence that tape decks ever reached) for 1500 which is a steal.

PR quote of the day: "Dawn Of A Dark Age is the main project of the multi-instrumentalist Vittorio Sabelli, a classical and jazz musician who gave to the clarinet a leading role for the first time in black metal." OH GOOD.

The Defacement album is pretty good in a Portal-ish amorphous roaring-with-ambient-interludes sort of way.

yo you're clowning but black metal with a clarinet sounds rad

ok I"m listening to Dawn of a Dark Age's 2020 album and it's fantastic

If you're interested in a sampler of mostly obscure black metal, sadly almost all of it not involving clarinets, here's one I just made: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3lbWHmuy1TU9wAh1yFYZb1?si=3695e91ca7954032

On the more Cratylian end of metal, Sewer Fiend's EP Echoes from the Cistern is exactly what you think it is, and it's the shiznit (even more so than the Fossilization imo):

New Spirit Adrift EP (three songs) in August! The title track, "Forge Your Future," is out now. Closer to their earlier, doomier stuff than the epic power metal anthems on the last album IMO, but I'm into it.

Attila sings a la how he does on "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" on the opening track of the new Mayhem, it's kind of LOL.

not up to Aerosmith standards (Neanderthal), Friday, 9 July 2021 14:53 (two years ago) link

It's a solid little EP, packed with all punk rawk covers in the second half (Discharge, Dead Kennedys, Rudimentary Peni, Ramones), but I don't think I'll be revisiting it very often.

I was gonna order the Mayhem EP that just was released but for some reason Century media is asking $18 for a seven-song EP with only one new song and four punk covers that combined take up less than eight minutes. So fuck that.

Is that including shipping, at least? Insane either way.

but also fuck you (unperson), Sunday, 11 July 2021 13:47 (two years ago) link

It is not including shipping at the Century Media site. It does come with free shipping through Amazon at the same price assuming you have Prime or tack on enough stuff for free shipping from them.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Sunday, 11 July 2021 15:32 (two years ago) link

For shits and giggles I checked it out - this is what it costs to buy an EP Digipack CD by itself from Century media:

Subtotal$17.98
Shipping$6.82
Tax $1.49
Order Total$26.29

They do offer $5 shipping for orders $50 or more and free shipping for orders $75 or more, to be fair, but it's still ridiculous.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Sunday, 11 July 2021 15:38 (two years ago) link

I mean I kind of understand why Deathcrush was always $19.99 (cashing in on historically important material) but this EP seems like a good argument for $9.99 EPs

Shaidar Logoff (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 12 July 2021 11:34 (two years ago) link

Yep, I haven't found that EP for less than $18 base price anywhere, I'll stick with streaming on that one.

So, I am ashamed to admit that I am only just now getting around to Thy Catafalque, despite seeing you folks hyping his stuff for awhile now. Glad I finally did though, Vadak is just so gloriously bonkers and insane, I absolutely love it.
