That's Andi Oliver front right so it must be Rip Rig and Panic.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Sunday, 15 November 2020 18:34 (two weeks ago) link

i don't think it is Andi Oliver, and no Gareth Sager, Bruce Smith, Mark Springer or Neneh Cherry so pretty sure it isn't RR&P.

^King Trigger

Could be King Trigger. I see they get mentioned in the thread. I know zilch about them.

stirmonster, Sunday, 15 November 2020 18:42 (two weeks ago) link

Ha! A bit of Googling reveals I might actually have seen them live supporting The Thompson Twins.

stirmonster, Sunday, 15 November 2020 18:44 (two weeks ago) link

Scroll down for a pic. Although that is not the lineup I remember.

Someone from King Trigger went on the thread to say it wasn't them.

is that the "Our Trudi was tiny..." comment? i thought that was him confirming it :)

stirmonster, Sunday, 15 November 2020 23:26 (two weeks ago) link

someone called Ian Cleverly from KT responds to two different posts. I can't see the Trudi comment!

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Sunday, 15 November 2020 23:40 (two weeks ago) link

ah, i can see his "It’s not, honest" comment now. i couldn't before. the mystery continues....

stirmonster, Sunday, 15 November 2020 23:46 (two weeks ago) link

this photo has been bothering me for two whole days now. so familiar, it feels like i might have even owned a record by this lot at some point. anyone want to make a guess as to the year or the genre of music they made?

kites aren't fun (NickB), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 15:47 (two weeks ago) link

Considering the preponderance of hats (well, two) I'm guessing the genre is something along the lines of Brit Funk or "jazz-funk", along the lines of Freez, Level 42 or 52nd Street.

lad on the left has a real look of Ben Volpeliere-Pierrot but i don't think it's them

big man on scampus (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:07 (two weeks ago) link

I feel like if we're not guessing it correctly based on the Lad on the Left we're never going to get it...

henry s, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:10 (two weeks ago) link

Ha otm, we need to identify blurry face glasses guy, that's the key imo.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:12 (two weeks ago) link

The American version of that group (cause I'm assuming they're British) would be The Breakfast Club, therefore mid-'80s r&b/dance

Josefa, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:13 (two weeks ago) link

What do you think of this?

left to right: guitar, drums, bass, vox, keyboards

henry s, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:14 (two weeks ago) link

Lad on the left definitely has a bit of the Ben Volpeliere-Pierrots about him.

Timewise it could be up to late 80s i reckon - I'm going to throw a wild guess at 1987. for a minute i was thinking possibly Acid Jazzers but probably not sharp dresssed enough.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:30 (two weeks ago) link

mullet guy in the centre and the guy on the right who looks like he has teleported in from the back of a 1979 new wave album are really confusing me

kites aren't fun (NickB), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:36 (two weeks ago) link

maybe tag https://twitter.com/ben_volpeliere ?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:37 (two weeks ago) link

i've just discovered after googling that BVP didn't do anything beyond Curiosity so i don't see how it can be him but it's that look, like Stirmonster said i'd put these anywhere between 83-ish and as late as 90/91

big man on scampus (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:39 (two weeks ago) link

Main vibe I'm getting is support slot with Animal Nightlife / one single on a chrysalis records subsidiary and never heard from again

kites aren't fun (NickB), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:45 (two weeks ago) link

Pretty sure Gilles Peterson would know the answer.

henry s, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:50 (two weeks ago) link

yeah or Eddie Pillar. was just thinking Acid Jazzy looking.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:52 (two weeks ago) link

That is absolutely not BVP.

There’s a reply on there suggesting it’s Andrea Oliver and a band she formed or was ‘involved in’ after Rip Rig + Panic. The band, Kalimba, are mentioned on her WP page, described as ‘African inspired’. There’s an entry for a band of that name in something called Rockmine, some sort of online music encyclopedia, where it lists the five members of the band. I can’t find any pictures of them, nor any other mentions. Nothing on Discogs that I could find (including no mention under Andrea Oliver). Seems a bit hard to believe such a band would never have released anything. Other members were (from ‘Rockmine’ page) ‘Guy Batey - bass; Pete Dungerian [must be spelled wrong as no Google results] - guitar, harmonica, saxophone; Andy Norton - guitar; Andrea Oliver - vocals; Tintin - drums’. I suppose you could say the guy on the left looks a bit like the character Tintin. But the whole thing might be a giant red herring.

dubmill, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 17:24 (two weeks ago) link

Not heard of Kalimba before, but it might not have been the best choice of name considering that Kalima may already have been on the indie jazz funk scene by then

kites aren't fun (NickB), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 17:31 (two weeks ago) link

Kalimba is a musical instrument. I see Kalima was named after a track by Elvin Jones. 'Kalimba' is a popular choice of name: on Discogs there are about 13 bands or artists called that. None of them correspond to the one in question.

dubmill, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 17:40 (two weeks ago) link

I thought the Kalimba name was familiar but then realised I was thinking of Kalima.
Almost certainly at least one of these people ended up playing in a band that released something on Acid Jazz, possibly a lone track on a compilation.

hmmm. i was convinced it wasn't Andrea Oliver but perhaps it is. (sorry Jed)

stirmonster, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 17:52 (two weeks ago) link

either guy in hat / cap are a shoo in for being on that lone track on an Acid Jazz comp.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 17:53 (two weeks ago) link

Tall guy in the broad-brimmed hat absolutely reeks of fretless bass

kites aren't fun (NickB), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 18:03 (two weeks ago) link

Are we sure this isn't 4 Jacks And A Jill?

lol great band

big man on scampus (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 20:27 (two weeks ago) link

The one at the back looks like Bruce Wooley

But seeing as none of the others look like Thomas Dolby...

Mark G, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 21:02 (two weeks ago) link

Middle Mullet Man looks a bit like Rolo McGinty, which made me think of the Woodentops (who were also fond of hats) but this ain't them...

henry s, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 21:17 (two weeks ago) link

does anyone have a clue about where they might be? If it's Kalimba, they were from Brighton - could be that some kind of pier/entertainment park location?

StanM, Wednesday, 18 November 2020 16:35 (two weeks ago) link

i'm in brighton but i don't recognise the location tbh. the high roof and the good light make me think they're in a railway station or similar? outdoors but not quite outside

Here's andi oliver's twitter, I'm convinced it's her but I could easily be wrong. https://twitter.com/andisn16

C’mon, the guy in the back with the hat is clearly Zach Braff.
