That's Andi Oliver front right so it must be Rip Rig and Panic.

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Sunday, 15 November 2020 18:34 (ten months ago) link

i don't think it is Andi Oliver, and no Gareth Sager, Bruce Smith, Mark Springer or Neneh Cherry so pretty sure it isn't RR&P.

everything, Sunday, 15 November 2020 18:42 (ten months ago) link

Could be King Trigger. I see they get mentioned in the thread. I know zilch about them.

stirmonster, Sunday, 15 November 2020 18:42 (ten months ago) link

Ha! A bit of Googling reveals I might actually have seen them live supporting The Thompson Twins.

stirmonster, Sunday, 15 November 2020 18:44 (ten months ago) link

Scroll down for a pic. Although that is not the lineup I remember.

Someone from King Trigger went on the thread to say it wasn't them.

is that the "Our Trudi was tiny..." comment? i thought that was him confirming it :)

stirmonster, Sunday, 15 November 2020 23:26 (ten months ago) link

someone called Ian Cleverly from KT responds to two different posts. I can't see the Trudi comment!

ah, i can see his "It’s not, honest" comment now. i couldn't before. the mystery continues....

this photo has been bothering me for two whole days now. so familiar, it feels like i might have even owned a record by this lot at some point. anyone want to make a guess as to the year or the genre of music they made?

kites aren't fun (NickB), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 15:47 (ten months ago) link

Considering the preponderance of hats (well, two) I'm guessing the genre is something along the lines of Brit Funk or "jazz-funk", along the lines of Freez, Level 42 or 52nd Street.

lad on the left has a real look of Ben Volpeliere-Pierrot but i don't think it's them

I feel like if we're not guessing it correctly based on the Lad on the Left we're never going to get it...

Ha otm, we need to identify blurry face glasses guy, that's the key imo.

The American version of that group (cause I'm assuming they're British) would be The Breakfast Club, therefore mid-'80s r&b/dance

Josefa, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:13 (ten months ago) link

What do you think of this?

left to right: guitar, drums, bass, vox, keyboards

henry s, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:14 (ten months ago) link

Lad on the left definitely has a bit of the Ben Volpeliere-Pierrots about him.

Timewise it could be up to late 80s i reckon - I'm going to throw a wild guess at 1987. for a minute i was thinking possibly Acid Jazzers but probably not sharp dresssed enough.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:30 (ten months ago) link

mullet guy in the centre and the guy on the right who looks like he has teleported in from the back of a 1979 new wave album are really confusing me

maybe tag https://twitter.com/ben_volpeliere ?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:37 (ten months ago) link

i've just discovered after googling that BVP didn't do anything beyond Curiosity so i don't see how it can be him but it's that look, like Stirmonster said i'd put these anywhere between 83-ish and as late as 90/91

big man on scampus (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:39 (ten months ago) link

There’s a reply on there suggesting it’s Andrea Oliver and a band she formed or was ‘involved in’ after Rip Rig + Panic. The band, Kalimba, are mentioned on her WP page, described as ‘African inspired’. There’s an entry for a band of that name in something called Rockmine, some sort of online music encyclopedia, where it lists the five members of the band. I can’t find any pictures of them, nor any other mentions. Nothing on Discogs that I could find (including no mention under Andrea Oliver). Seems a bit hard to believe such a band would never have released anything. Other members were (from ‘Rockmine’ page) ‘Guy Batey - bass; Pete Dungerian [must be spelled wrong as no Google results] - guitar, harmonica, saxophone; Andy Norton - guitar; Andrea Oliver - vocals; Tintin - drums’. I suppose you could say the guy on the left looks a bit like the character Tintin. But the whole thing might be a giant red herring.

dubmill, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 17:24 (ten months ago) link

Not heard of Kalimba before, but it might not have been the best choice of name considering that Kalima may already have been on the indie jazz funk scene by then

kites aren't fun (NickB), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 17:31 (ten months ago) link

Kalimba is a musical instrument. I see Kalima was named after a track by Elvin Jones. 'Kalimba' is a popular choice of name: on Discogs there are about 13 bands or artists called that. None of them correspond to the one in question.

dubmill, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 17:40 (ten months ago) link

I thought the Kalimba name was familiar but then realised I was thinking of Kalima.
Almost certainly at least one of these people ended up playing in a band that released something on Acid Jazz, possibly a lone track on a compilation.

does anyone have a clue about where they might be? If it's Kalimba, they were from Brighton - could be that some kind of pier/entertainment park location?

StanM, Wednesday, 18 November 2020 16:35 (ten months ago) link

i'm in brighton but i don't recognise the location tbh. the high roof and the good light make me think they're in a railway station or similar? outdoors but not quite outside

It’s not hard too find pictures of Inflo (Sault) but there’s not much:

Inflo and I spent the last couple of years producing the new @michaelkiwanuka album. The first song "You Ain't the Problem" featured on the the updated playlist. https://t.co/sOR36hkqmd

A few years back my partner discovered this album because it contains a song with the same name as a @fotc song (Feel Inside and Stuff Like That). Maybe one of my music nerd friends can solve the mystery before the year ends. Like @tcarmody or @keyescore https://t.co/1XCbsgrxEt

My theory: the artist name & album/song titles are just mis-tags which is causing most of the confusion. I'd focus more on the actual lyrics to id the artist, which is basically just a bedroom demo?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 8 January 2021 16:38 (eight months ago) link

I think all the song titles are taken from 2012 songs, lol.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 January 2021 17:01 (eight months ago) link

How would the album's title and songs be mistagged? I don't know how this stuff works.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 January 2021 17:02 (eight months ago) link

Code being broken? Possibly unheard iLoveMakonnen (?) demos?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 January 2021 17:09 (eight months ago) link

MP3s have metadata and some infamous music software programs with v. poor database resolution have been known to haphazardly reassign various fields in the metadata.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 8 January 2021 17:09 (eight months ago) link

Like this is the likely where the artist/"album" name comes from (a karaoke track of the Nicki song):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J18_g8dY8oA

It appears the OP demo's metadata got replaced by this (and various other 2012 hits) metadata.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 8 January 2021 17:11 (eight months ago) link

We actually had a thread on ILM/Noize about MP3-mistagging during the filesharing heyday but I can't find it.

Gah, just heard this classic but minor new wave track whose artist is totally slipping my mind. Essentially in the power pop zone, no synths that I recall, has a chorus that goes "that's what all the people say" or "that's what other people say." Sounds like it could be 1979 or early '80s, totally brain farting away from an answer.
