When the World Falls Apart (Motown tribute songs)

Obvious poll. Heard "Nightshift" on the radio this morning--not strictly a Motown tribute, also Jackie Wilson. Thought of including "Motownphilly" (which I don't like at all), also the Maisonettes' "Heartache Avenue"...but extending it to songs that sound like Motown would be endless. (Also, listening to it now, it's probably more girl-group than Motown.)

Poll Results

OptionVotes
"Nightshift," the Commodores (1985) 14
"Levi Stubbs' Tears," Billy Bragg (1986) 4
"When Smokey Sings," ABC (1987) 1

Hits "click," immediately--immediately--remembers Rod Stewart's "The Motown Song." (Which would probably finish last anyway, so full speed ahead.)

Not passionate about any of these, but Nightshift for the delay on "Marvin... Marvin... Marvin..."

My favourite fake Motown song is About the Weather by Magazine.

I don't mind the other two, but far and away "Levi Stubbs' Tears" for me.

I put "Nightshift" at the #1 spot on that Motown poll from several years ago; I suspect I was trying to provocative, but I really do love that song: had an "everybody shut up for the next four minutes" moment in the car about a month back when it came on the radio.

I like "When Smokey Sings" as well; hadn't heard "Levi Stubbs' Tears" until just now (!)

Making a shitty Motown pastiche/tribute record with the Temptations is weirdly impressive. (See also: Stewart's worthless cover of "This Old Heart Of Mine" with Ronald Isley)

I was about to say that if Stewart had been on this poll, there would've been two acts who played Sun City during apartheid. But when I looked it up just now, I saw that the Commodores had actually cancelled their planned 1989 shows there. Prior to the cancellation, keyboardist and founding member Milan Williams quit the band in protest.

Came to "Levi Stubbs' Tears" through Marcus' "Speaker to Speaker" column, which ran for a while in Artforum.
