Prince: Graffiti Bridge - What is the Answer to The Question of UR Favorite Song?

I imagine 'Thieves in the Temple' would be the early favorite for non-fans but I daresay this one might be closer than you'd expect.

Tick, Tick, Bang is silly but I love it

also, Round and Round!

(the answer is Joy In Repetition, though)

Thieves in the Temple is one of those songs that seems like it's just not going to work and then it does, flawlessly, and you're sitting there confused going "I don't get what just happened but I'm super happy about it"

Song for song, a pretty massively underrated album.

Joy in Repetition but it's tough. So many great tunes. Saw him live in Manchester the *day* the album was released and he literally did one song from it;
The Question Of U.

piscesx, Monday, 2 November 2020 19:41 (three years ago) link

I thought that a lot of the material on GB was taken from his vault and that The Question of U was one of the more recent songs that he wrote for the album?

For sure "Can't Stop This Feeling I Got" had been kicking around awhile.

"We Can Funk" also existed in a Dream Factory/Crystal Ball version.

"Can't Stop This Feelin' I Got" is an inferior "Play in the Sunshine" but it's fine.

I looove the guitar in "Elephants and Flowers" complementing the chorus' gospel coda ("There will be peace on earth who love...").

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 2 November 2020 21:35 (three years ago) link

How on earth did the GB movie get funded though? Warners didn't pick up the SOTT movie but funded the GB film? Crazy. Maybe that's why he hated them in 92. They kept letting him do stupid stuff.

The 86 version of we can funk kills. Miko weaver has a truly exquisite solo

This is one of the very first CDs I bought (while still relatively new, from a Kmart clearance bin, alongside The Head on the Door) but gave it away as I think I felt it "inessential" or something. Though I didn't particularly dislike it and subsequently ended up with most of the surrounding Prince material in the house anyway.

My first thought was "Joy in Repetition" or "Tick Tick Bang". (Now that I've written all that, this post feels freakishly similar to a bunch of others in the thread, lol.)

Voted for "Melody Cool" just because Ulysess made fun of it. It's a dope tune, IMO: Mavis Staples is the best singer on the album, the melody is catchy, the synth riff is heavy as fuck, the lyrical concept is fun... What's not to like?

Even if this was only a pure prince album, it's still a minor one. A stop gap set. All the te recorded versions of vault songs are generally not as good as the unreleased versions, though ok, we can funk is excellent. Strange that he used so few new songs when supposedly he had two albums that didnt come out after lovesexy. Also as Nelson George wrote back then, strange to hear him writing about being the new power generation, and generational battles, when he wasnt a young upstart anymore.

candyman, Wednesday, 23 December 2020 08:41 (three years ago) link

Then again, I think the fact it has all the other artists songs obscures the genuinely good stuff, I.e question of u (though this seems underwritten, theres only one verse!), joy, we can funk, thieves.

candyman, Wednesday, 23 December 2020 08:49 (three years ago) link

Most of the songs by other artists here are quite good! Except for the George Clinton one.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 23 December 2020 08:52 (three years ago) link

Haha. The Clinton one has an incredible groove! The time ones are decent but should have been on pandemonium, not here, round and round is the best proper song on here weirdly, melody cool is just ho hum (was he ever good at writing for his heroes?).

candyman, Wednesday, 23 December 2020 09:16 (three years ago) link

1. "Can't Stop This Feeling I Got"
2. "New Power Generation, Part 1"
4. "The Question of U"
5. "Elephants & Flowers"
7. "We Can Funk" Prince feat. George Clinton
8. "Joy in Repetition"
10. "Tick, Tick, Bang"
12. "Thieves in the Temple"
15. "Still Would Stand All Time"
16. "Graffiti Bridge"

a prince album made from this soundtrack wouldnt be a bad album.

candyman, Wednesday, 23 December 2020 15:06 (three years ago) link

Underrated album. Understandably it gets knocked for being one more step in a decline, and to be fair very little of it can be considered career highlights for anyone. But it's still a pretty good album, and I find the whole thing enjoyable from end to end including the guest spots - pretty impressive for a double LP.

"Thieves in the Temple" deserves to win but I'll probably vote for Tevin Campbell's track, "Round and Round." It was actually a big hit (made it to #12 on the pop charts, #3 R&B).

"Can't Stop This Feeling I Got" and the Crystal Ball outtake "Joy In Repetition" are close behind. "Still Would Stand All Time" is pretty good too, but it was much better when Prince did it live. (It was a highlight during the after hours shows on the 1988 tour.)

Collectively, I think the Time tracks are more consistently enjoyable than anyone else's, but there isn't one track that I'd put on par with the best stuff from their first three LP's.

Except for the execrable "The Arms of Orion" (which I replaced with "200 Balloons") I don't think it's a bad album. It's very thin compared to any of his previous LP's, no surprise given what it is, but it still gets knocked a lot for being a mediocre album.

birdistheword, Wednesday, 23 December 2020 18:43 (three years ago) link

Batman is an under written quickie album.
Enjoyable for sure, but not really worth much deep focus. Most prince is enjoyable though, even the creepier songs, so perhaps that's not that notable.
