Is this meant to teach zoomers about what lies behind and beside the millennial Canon?

pomenitul, Thursday, 22 October 2020 20:31 (three years ago) link

that Mingus track is great. I'm sure I've heard it in a Thom DJ set

I don't know anything about Ane Brun but I'm listening to her rendition of 'How to Disappear Completely' right now and it's way better than I expected. Makes me miss Thom's voice of old.

No way, zoomers don't buy Mojo magazine.

Would make for a better comp and a better thread I'm sure.

They called it Kidology cause they couldn't get the rights to throw a Lee Perry track on there or what?

Cabo Weibo (卡波微博) (Deflatormouse), Friday, 23 October 2020 01:23 (three years ago) link

I don’t know the article quoted above but I can guess the relationship on most of these. As far as I can tell all of these are referential to the Kid A / Amnesiac era:

1. Clinic – Monkey on Your Back
Opened for Radiohead on the late 90’s. The band were fans of them.

2. Can – Thief
Thom is a big fan, song was covered in the tour.

3. Charles Mingus – Freedom
Iirc Jonny played this on a webcast. Quoted Mingus as an influence for the albums.

4. James Holden – Delabole
No idea. I’m guessing this is something Thom cited as an influence.

5. Harmonia & Eno – Atmosphere
No idea. Probably a Jonny quote on Treefingers.

6. Ane Brun – How to Disappear Completely
A cover.

7. Sigur Rós – Svefn-g-englar
They opened for Radiohead or they played together at some point in the early 00’s. I don’t think either band is specially influenced by one another.

8. Lali Puna – Everywhere & Allover
Colin was a big fan of the Morr label and Lali Puna.

9. Other Lives – Tamer Animals (Atoms for Peace Remix)
A remix by thom.

10. Kelly Lee Owens – Melt!
She covered Arpeggi.

11. Slint – Washer
No idea.

12. Rick Simpson – Kid A
A cover?

13. Susanne Sundfør – Lilith
No idea

14. Olivier Messiaen – Oraison
Jonny is a big fan and has cited him as the main influence for his solo work and some of Rh’s string arrangements.

15. Luke Abbott – Flux
No idea

Hah, thanks, but I guarantee you it'd be tin-eared. Besides, Moka did a good job of explaining the rationale behind most of these picks, which makes this compilation seem a bit less superfluous as a result.

This poll is sadly missing the Autechre/BoC/Skam/Warp influences that led to Kid A.

Un-fooled and placid (sic), Friday, 30 October 2020 00:06 (three years ago) link

I think “Freeman, Hardy & Willis Acid” by Squarepusher and Aphex Twin is the track that Thom raved the most about as the future of music in the Kid A era.

I actually want to direct you to my Spotify playlist comprising the songs each band member played during the 5 webcasts that were released over the span of 1999-2007. It’s filled with amazing songs:

Copy- pasting from a thread where I posted 5 years ago, I think the “Radiohead Public Library” released a last year actually contains some of these webcasts nowadays, they used to be very hard to find.... anyhoo:

Radiohead have done 5 webcasts so far. With the exception of the fifth one (In Rainbows) all of these are very hard to find complete online. I haven't had any luck finding them but I've been compiling this information since 2002 from many sources and double-checking the playlists as there were several errors in them There's still two songs in there that are incorrect or don't exists and I'm not sure what they could be (South Bronx and Justin Berkon)
Here's a spotify playlist: http://open.spotify.com/user/moteldemoka/playlist/6cheK9aNqRcEeqJYc1ooh4
Note 1: Some songs are not available on Spotify but I calculate at least 88% of the list is there.
Note 2: The setlist for the 4th web cast is still incomplete and it seems like noone on the internet has a recording of it.

I should probably update the playlist I’m sure the missing songs are there nowadays.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 30 October 2020 04:14 (three years ago) link

There's still two songs in there that are incorrect or don't exists and I'm not sure what they could be (South Bronx and Justin Berkon)

South Bronx - Hip Hop Til You Drop (???)

This song was apparently known to a Radiohead member only from this bootleg compilation

Justin Berkon - The Juice (????)

Here I think Thom's handwriting must have just been a bit sloppy on the last two letters

edited for dog profanity (sic), Friday, 30 October 2020 04:42 (three years ago) link

Ah yes forgot to update that one. Someone on reddit commented this back then:

Justin Berkon doesn't exist. I think it could be Justin Berkovi. He has a song called "The Juice" and is a german techno record from 1999 so it makes sense for Thom to play that.
The South Bronx one is tricky... not sure what song or artist it's referencing. Discogs might help. It could be the song South Bronx by Boogie Down Productions.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 30 October 2020 04:59 (three years ago) link

That bootleg compilation is interesting and might be the answer. I might have to take some time in the weekend to see if the full webcasts are indeed online in the rh public library to search that one.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 30 October 2020 05:02 (three years ago) link

Ok I see that at least the third webcast “amateur night III” is indeed in there.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 30 October 2020 05:12 (three years ago) link

My first guess was that the BDP track had been on the popular UK "Hip Hop Don't Stop" compilation series, and it had been badly transcribed; when that didn't pan out, I searched Hip Hop Til You Drop on Discogs, so reddit poster otm :)

edited for dog profanity (sic), Friday, 30 October 2020 05:17 (three years ago) link

Webcast 3, 4 and 5 are indeed available in the Radiohead Public Library and from taking a quick peek it seems that there’s also some songs missing. I think I heard an Aphex Twin track in there (girl boy song I think it was) that is not in the list.

No luck with the first two... I hope they’re hidden somewhere in there so I can actually listen to that “south bronx” song and finally clear what track it actually is.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 30 October 2020 05:23 (three years ago) link

But both you and that reddit poster arrived to the same conclusion so I guess that’s the one.

Its a nice compilation. I can listen to it with no great love of Radiohead.
Not sue if I'd heard the original of Freedom by Mingus which is a thing I should have corrected years ago. I had the song covered by a pre Procul Harum Paramounts as @the Mule' on a compilation of their stuff i had in the 90s.
& Thief may be a little obscure or is all the released Can of the era seen as on a similar level of availability or accessibility these days .
I guess Delay 68 has been around for decades.
Have been having this play for the last few days on my 3 changer.

Xpost: lol sorry I hadn’t noticed you had hyperlinked to the video in there, I was on mobile and only saw the discogs link. Getting used to seeing and using myself the sloppier, lazier form of just copying and pasting links instead hiperlinked text.
