Just because I happened to listen to this today, for the first time in ages. There are some really good tracks, as well as some bland coffee table chin strokers. But which ones are which?

For reference, here's a poll of Headz 2a

Neil S, Thursday, 1 October 2020 09:59 (three years ago) link

“In/Flux” means the most out of any of these to me but otoh I personally think the version on this comp is inferior to the one released on eg Preemptive Strike... torn.

really looking forward to wearily scrolling past all your posts (Champiness), Thursday, 1 October 2020 10:06 (three years ago) link

Not listened to this in absolute ages. Remember the vinyl going for insane amounts on ebay back in the day. Will have to re-listen, it will be like an old box of memories opening.

here's the version I'm listening to: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Headz-A-Soundtrack-Of-Experimental-Beathead-Jams/release/1112162

xp Shadow's contributions do stand out from the rest quite a bit I think, they defnitely have a bit more of an edge to them, whether it's the production, choice of samples, or quality of composition I don't know

Voted for La Funk Mob, really love that tune.

The Autechre and Nightmares On Wax tracks are fabulous too.

The Howie B/DJ Krush remake of Wildstyle under the name Olde Scottish is really, really good

Neil S, Thursday, 1 October 2020 10:39 (three years ago) link

Voted for In/Flux but that Skull track is cool. Wish Trevor Jackson had done more stuff under that name. There's just a few EPs IIRC.

Treblekicker, Thursday, 1 October 2020 11:19 (three years ago) link

didn't know that was Trevor Jackson, amazing!

Neil S, Thursday, 1 October 2020 12:45 (three years ago) link

have to be honest, i never made the connection between the Skull track on this compilation and the Skull ep i have on Output.
but now it makes sense.

mark e, Thursday, 1 October 2020 13:15 (three years ago) link

i have more than one copy of this ... more than two ... more than three ... :-/

the only track i don't like is the howie b one, i think in/flux is objectively the best but i might vote for deflon sallahr because i love that track

Tranquility Bass for me.

I was living in Glasgow when this came out and I remember somebody coming over to the flat I always hung out in, having just bought this on vinyl, and removing it from his carrier bag kind of reverentially and explaining to us what it was and why we needed to listen to it. I think we thought it was sort of wet shite at the time tbh lol

In/Flux was something genuinely new to me and still is classic. But yes this isn't the 'right' version?

I want to vote for La Funk Mob but based on the Richie Hawtin mix on the same EP.

I have to shamefully say, I was removing Mox wax compilations from plastic bags in Glasgow in the mid/early nineties and reverentially explaining them to people.

but luckily, I never had Headz and was living in Stirling when Heads2 came out.

voted Old Scottish, as that was a standout track in the Mo Wax Excursions vinyl set.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Friday, 2 October 2020 09:54 (three years ago) link

This is one of my favorite compilations. I disagree that the Shadow songs stand out among the rest. The quality remains consistent throughout this compilation. At different times, Contemplating Jazz, Don't Fake It, Time Has Come, Wildstyle, They Came In Peace, and a handful of others have been my favorites. I bought this on CD In the plastic card wallet when it was released. Chose the ltd CD of Headz instead of the deluxe 2cd version of Throbbing Pouch, which I still don't have. I think I made the right choice, but Throbbing Pouch is classic too.

I was late to the party so Headz 2 was my jam. Got so lost in that thing. Might need to poll it next.

Oh, missed that there was already a 2a poll. Yeah, 2b needs the treatment.

go for it! might be worth seeing how many votes this poll gets, there's been a fair bit of chat

I didn't actually vote for the track that I pledged for but the ae track is truly great. The shadow tracks are very obviously the best, let's face it, and they didn't win because people were voting for not the obvious best, but the one(s) that needs more attention.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I voted for the track I liked the best. A lot of DJ Shadow's stuff leaves me cold to be honest.

Lowride is a super track regardless.

does it look like i'm here (jon123), Friday, 9 October 2020 12:04 (three years ago) link

i forgot to vote, but i wouldn't have voted for "lowride", not because it's not an incredible track but because i feel like in these mo'wax polls one should only vote for mo'wax tracks, not licensed tracks

a write-in for "don't fake it"
