Sir Van Morrison has accused the government of "taking our freedom" in three new songs that protest against the coronavirus lockdown.

In the lyrics, he claims scientists are "making up crooked facts" to justify measures that "enslave" the population.

"The new normal, is not normal," he sings. "We were born to be free".

Scam Likely (morrisp), Friday, 18 September 2020 03:31 (two years ago) link

yeah, almost all of these people are Generation X, not boomers

The list has a lot of people who have been known to be kind of gullible fools for some time, or people who generally have a reputation for ~not being very bright~ (Gallagher and Brown in particular) - but I've been struggling with my inner fanboy over the RDJ thing for some time, since he resurfaced around the time of Syro and started up with various truther discourse - so the covid stuff is not a surprise, but it's still v v depressing.

There are people where it kinda goes with their schtick, but with RDJ, I really wanna grab him by the shoulders and go "you are actually *smarter* than this?" He's bright, he's sciencey, he was educated, in that he got halfway to a degree in electrical engineering, this man is not a fool?

But I guess that's sometimes the thing with conspiracy thinking, that conspiracies can *be* especially flattering to people who have experienced being brighter than most people around them, (not hard in the music industry!) and this is one of those stereotypes I hate reinforcing, but Autists, especially ones with Aspergers, like RDJ, in particular are very susceptible to it - that if you are constantly noticing weird shit that neurotypicals just *don't*, that it leaves you very susceptible to believing that you have access to special truths that neurotypicals don't or can't see.

And for a conspiracy brainloop to really take hold, it's like it has to piggyback on something you already care a LOT about. (Like how anti-trans ideology can canibalise both feminist activism AND virulently anti-feminist activism, because these are issues that people care about very deeply!)

RDJ has always had a very serious anti-authoritarian streak. And this idea that 'Britain is a police state' - the thing is, there are many ways in which Britain already *is* very like a police state. All the jokes about 'rainy fascism island' are getting at something - the abuse of Stop and Search, the suppression of protest, the absolute impunity of the police to murder citizens with no repercussions, the wholesale deportation of the Windrush generation, etc. etc. etc. - but his established anti-authoritarian special interest doesn't seem to fixate on those genuine abuses. It leaps sideways onto something tangential which affects him (he can't leave his house) and instead of landing on something with a basis in fact (the Tory government is absolutely mishandling the epidemic) it leaps into 'being quarantined = oh noes here is the police state'.

Sorry to bring politics into ILM, if this was intended to just be a list thread. 'Why do people get caught up in weird conspiracy theories' is one of my long-term special interests, for obvious reasons.

Grebo Jones (Branwell with an N), Friday, 18 September 2020 08:08 (two years ago) link

you'd think maybe the group of absolute foolish poltroons (who most of you'd cross a road to avoid) who make up th C-19 truther gang might make RJD pause for thought somewhat? I find it unforgivable that ppl who are otherwise silent about genuine human rights abuses committed by the British state are jumping on the Icke bandwagon ffs!

Someone I used to work with sends out emails about how to 'undo' the vaccine. 'Its not too late!'

The community that built up around it must be smaller now, and their opponents providing less to react to, taking much of the energy out of it. I understand higher profile people holding on to it longer, just can't really tell how much traction there is in anymore

MIA was mentioned within the first ten posts of this thread and her twitter feed seems pretty consistent in terms of its derangement. I know there's a comfort in thinking everyone who spouts shitty stuff is doing it for clout but she seems like a true believer to me.

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 13 October 2022 13:08 (one month ago) link

oh no doubt shes a true believer but imho also savvy enough to know what buttons to push for extra attention, she even seems to have been laying off the vax stuff until recently

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Thursday, 13 October 2022 13:31 (one month ago) link

Anti-vax rhetoric is still very prevalent in U.S. right-wing circles. One of the major current themes is that all the warnings about increased risk of heart attack and stroke in people who have had COVID is a cover story for the damage done by the vaccines. And hell Florida's surgeon general just threw fuel on that fire. The approximately 39 percent of people in my county who aren't vaccinated presumably buy into all of this.

Is there the same energy behind it? In the US it feel its been incorporated into general right-wing messaging. I'm not sure same is true in UK where it felt more like its own bubble, not quite as connected

anvil, Thursday, 13 October 2022 13:51 (one month ago) link

I've been wondering if the reason we can't have decent health coverage in the United States is that we've been in love with snake oil since the old west, apparently. Something the about the frontier myth, finding that secret source of gold or something.

bendy, Thursday, 13 October 2022 14:06 (one month ago) link

anti-Vax stuff seems to be growing in the US--lots of people who were seemingly sane are now blaming their health conditions on the vaccine

This is reaching people who weren't covidiots or anti-vaccine originally? Thats interesting, suggests messaging is coming from elsewhere if they were (presumably?) immune to it before?

anvil, Thursday, 13 October 2022 14:18 (one month ago) link

Where are you seeing this, Keyes?

Linkin Bio (morrisp), Thursday, 13 October 2022 14:35 (one month ago) link

imo It's all Facebook--lots of anecdotes about how "my daughter was perfectly healthy and now she has a heart murmur" and blaming the vaccine. Though usually it turns out the daughter also had Covid twice. My in-laws don't want to get the booster because they think the last shots gave them conditions.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday that about 264.6 million people had received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, including about 225.9 million people who had been fully vaccinated by the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine or the two-dose series made by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

The C.D.C. also reported that about 110.6 million fully vaccinated people have received an additional vaccine dose or a booster dose, and that approximately 11.5 million had gotten the updated bivalent booster shot, the highest level of protection against the virus.

11.5 million for the new booster is insanely low

I have a cousin who is getting deeper into this shit all the time. Every day it's some new made-up bullshit about how 95% of people have "blood abnormalities" after getting the vaccine, or whatever.

I sometimes feel like his basic problem is that he doesn't have the instinct to just Google stuff before posting. Look to see if there's any basis for it. He'll just accept anything that fits his narrative.

"They have been the most discriminated against group that I've ever witnessed in my lifetime," Smith said of unvaccinated Canadians at the news conference.

Uptake in the new booster is very low so far, but I wouldn’t assume that corresponds directly with skepticism about vaccine safety. I think it’s not easy motivating people to keep getting boosters for a number of reasons

Linkin Bio (morrisp), Thursday, 13 October 2022 15:10 (one month ago) link

yeah I don't think it has anything to do with safety concerns, if anything the anti-vaxx position is even more ridiculous now that billions of people have gotten it. I think it probably has more do to with Covid being out of the headlines and life more or less returning to normal, for better or worse. I didn't even know there was a booster that was formulated for Omicron that was available yet. to me its like getting an oil change. just something to do some day, when you get around to it, etc. I know this attitude is super dumb of course. and I did wind up getting it last week, but only because they were giving out free shots at work :)

frogbs, Thursday, 13 October 2022 15:16 (one month ago) link

Less than FOUR percent of eligible recipients have gotten the fourth booster. Granted a lot of people have gotten COVID recently and may be waiting out the recommended three months before getting it, but still that's incredibly dismal.

Virtually every Walgreen's in NYC now seems to have a booster shot available (though if you want to stick with the series you're on, they generally seem to carry only Pfizer or Moderna and not both).

birdistheword, Thursday, 13 October 2022 15:30 (one month ago) link

We made an appointment for our kid to get the just-approved pediatric booster next week but I'm sure the percentage of boosted kids in his school will be minimal two months from now.

In some countries the booster is only available to certain age groups (or certain conditions) so there's definitely less of a push (which means less to react to or rebel against!)

I'm getting it as soon as I can, but I've had Covid too recently to get one so soon, according to my doctor. And yeah, oil change is a good comparison.

nashwan, Friday, 14 October 2022 21:58 (one month ago) link

"11.5 million for the new booster is insanely low"

it is, but it's also 1) still relatively new, so if you got boosted again in the summer I don't know that you can get it yet (ie: I got boosted on July 31st, and it seems too soon? i'll probably get it in november) and 2) hard to get, it seems. Scheduling these for my kid was fucking painful, had to get it 25 miles away scheduled a week out.

akm, Saturday, 15 October 2022 20:43 (one month ago) link

In Maryland and Virginia you can get the new boosters two months after the last booster.

Lord Pickles (Boring, Maryland), Saturday, 15 October 2022 20:46 (one month ago) link

So there are 30 thousand doses of the latest vaccine being administered per day in the US. At that rate we could expect everyone in the population to have this dose in about 29 years.

also, it's about to no longer be free in the US

akm, Sunday, 16 October 2022 02:19 (one month ago) link

The public health emergency declaration (which makes vaccines, testing, and treatments free) was just extended another 90 days by Biden. The problem is that Republicans in Congress are refusing to authorize funding for additional rounds of boosters after this one (170 million doses have been purchased), more tests in the mail (funds for those have run out), etc.
