"Dish It Out" is my fave Contortions song by a wide margin

sleeve, Thursday, 10 September 2020 19:03 (two weeks ago) link

this was stupidly hard to find on LP for like decades, not even sure if the Lilith reissue is legit

sleeve, Thursday, 10 September 2020 19:04 (two weeks ago) link

Size by DNA was the first song I learned to play on the drums

yeah -- I remember hunting for Contortions records for years in the late 90s and finding nothing -- then there were a bunch of vinyl reissues.

sarahell, Thursday, 10 September 2020 19:06 (two weeks ago) link

how do you mean not legit?

plax (ico), Thursday, 10 September 2020 19:07 (two weeks ago) link

ha I had to check my copy -- yeah the Lilith reissue from 2005 is the one I have too.

sarahell, Thursday, 10 September 2020 19:09 (two weeks ago) link

I think there's just some question about Lilith's licensing of Universal stuff as a whole, but all I've heard is "might not be legit", dan selzer to thread!

sleeve, Thursday, 10 September 2020 19:10 (two weeks ago) link

ha i could ask weasel ...

sarahell, Thursday, 10 September 2020 19:11 (two weeks ago) link

Is there a list of the bands taht were excluded that would have been on the original multiartist compilation.

Do wonder who lost out to lack of recognition when the 4 bands of the in crowd took over.

Still, do like most of the stuff on it.

Is Not Moving by DNA on there or dod i just have it on DNA By DNA and possibly something else I used to have on vinyl.

Had a Mars 12" e.p. too and now a coupl eo fcd sets taht I haven't played in a while.

Not Moving is on No New York

sarahell, Thursday, 10 September 2020 19:15 (two weeks ago) link

Honestly, I hardly ever listen to it (I had to look it up), I mostly listen to the lol individual albums by the bands on it. I kept it though, after I purged 75% of my vinyl a few years back because it is useful in the context of DJ-ing.

sarahell, Thursday, 10 September 2020 19:17 (two weeks ago) link

yeah my Antilles OG was in the 2 crates of LPs (out of ~4000) I pulled yesterday in case we had to evacuate due to wildfire

sleeve, Thursday, 10 September 2020 19:20 (two weeks ago) link

there was this cool store called "Discount Den" right downtown when I went to college in Indiana in 1984 and whoever stocked their records had great taste, I bought so much cool shit there including NNY

sleeve, Thursday, 10 September 2020 19:22 (two weeks ago) link

we could speculate whether the Discount Den dude was connected to MX-80 et al ... even after 11 years here it is still weird when ILX and IRL collide.

sarahell, Thursday, 10 September 2020 19:26 (two weeks ago) link

"discount den" is like the platonic ideal of a used record store name

Give me a Chad Smith-type feel (map), Thursday, 10 September 2020 19:28 (two weeks ago) link

hahahah I can totally envision the platonic ideal college town strip mall in which it is located too! ...

sarahell, Thursday, 10 September 2020 19:31 (two weeks ago) link

it was new stock! and a female buyer! they sold, like, cigarettes and stuff, but the LPs were all new iirc

If you're concerned about the legit-ness of a Russian reissue, there was a Japanese one in 2012.

(I am not in that pic, it is of some members of this band & friends: https://www.discogs.com/artist/1786785-Blood-Farmers-2)

sleeve, Thursday, 10 September 2020 19:45 (two weeks ago) link

and nah I think Lilith does great work, I own numerous reissues of theirs and I think they are indeed somehow legit

sleeve, Thursday, 10 September 2020 19:46 (two weeks ago) link

Sweet!
A couple of times in the 70s, in different towns, I lived a block or so from nice-priced, student-aimed record stores that sold brand-new radio promo albums for 99 cents (singles for less, but I didn't buy those alas). We could read a Rock-a-Rama shortie in Creem, for inst., then walk a few feet and there was the new noise a-glimmering, like as not. Didn't have to be obscure either---sometimes they would have the same thing up front, for a regular sale price, and in the 99 cent sector (which was not small).
Speaking of the Contortions etc. findability, I've still got Irresistable Impulse, the 2002 James Chance box, which has Buy, Off White, and uh, prob all the James anybody could need, at least as of '02. Dunno if he still gets royalties for any of that, but either way: https://www.gofundme.com/f/for-james-chance-and-judy-taylor

That one irregularly repeated bass note in Puerto Rican Ghost is so fucking good.

that show a few years ago at the Knockout in SF was one of my "top 10 shows ever"

Same. The 2014 ilm poll results where it tied "Helen Forsdale" seem right on.

Saw Chance play in NY 6 or 7 years and idk i know he's getting up there and not great healthwise but he was barely present onstage. He took a 10min pause in the middle of the set to call his girlfriend from the stage and tell her how much longer the show was going to go for and what time he expected he'd be home.

Per that gofundme link, they're both pretty bad off, healthwise and related financially.

dow, Thursday, 10 September 2020 21:39 (two weeks ago) link

Apparently kept playing long as he could and then some, because of needing whatever money for medical, like many older musicians going way back, maybe especially in jazz and r&b. Also, his late father supported him as best he could.

This sounds pretty brilliant IMO. (Had I been a paying patron, I might disagree.)

i saw him 5 years ago or so and he seemed barely able to make it onto the stage. As the gig progressed he loosened up to the point that 45 minutes in he leapt off the (very high) stage. it was a pretty incredible transformation.

i posted about the fundraiser for him and his partner on the contortions thread - good to see it posted here too.

We were annoyed at the time but knowing the fuller context of his difficulties over recent years it’s understandable. But also yeah it hindsight it’s pretty funny tbh.

Kinda reminds me of a standup comedian who used to come onstage with a cup of coffee and a cigarette and just stand there smoking and drinking his coffee and when the audience started to get itchy, he'd say, "Hey — when you get to work, do you start right away?"
