I just went through a massive relistening session and came to the conclusion that this is the pinnacle of all these dancehall riddims:

apologies if mansplaining here, but bam bam the riddim is not the riddim used in bam bam the song. just want to make sure everyone knows what they're voting for...

murder she wrote is on the bam bam riddim
bam bam is on the stalag riddim

In this context, wouldn't the "old head" choice be Real Rock?

This is impossible though. RR and Stalag among the earliest I noticed/engaged with as riddims; also nice that they span different eras. I have extremely warm memories of the summer a friend of mine got super deep into Sleng Teng and basically only listened to versions of it for months. Tempted by Golden Hen (aka Diseases and Mad Mad, iirc) as I always love when that crops up, and between Yellowman, Tenor Saw, and Michigan & Smiley you have three mega classics...might have talked myself into that one.

There are like millions of versions of Punanny, so I'm not surprised to see that first.

golden hen is my fav as an instrumental piece of music, but it’s hard to deny the songs thatve used stalag

I did not confuse bam bam the song and bam bam the riddim ftr

bam bam riddim is the best

Diwali is an apex of recorded music, and I'm always chasing it, so that.

Would also nominate Street Sweeper for consideration.

where does Dembow fit into all this?

In this context, wouldn't the "old head" choice be Real Rock?

yes, but i'm not that old.

i could easily pick from about half a dozen of these but with regard to Sleng Teng i also basically only listened to versions of it for months.

where does Dembow fit into all this?

i guess Dembow is more important for it going on to have such a fundamental impact on Reggaeton rather than it being a riddim that there are tons of versions that people love.

Surprised not to see Tempo, Rumours or African beat
Also love Wicked in Bed (Shabba Ranks), Hypocrites, I'm Just a Guy, Love me Forever (Bim Sherman), Get in the groove...

From these, I don't know, Stalag. It's hard to separate from the performances on them.

A worthy winner, but it would have been nice if Real Rock got a few votes. My second choice.

Answer deserved a vote too; that's one I didn't immediately recognize based on the name, which was pretty dumb in retrospect, given how much I love Lone Ranger's titular version:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKmelL9RI9E

On the other hand, the selection criteria are fairly opaque to me. I basically disqualified Real Rock because it seemed like the list was trying to showcase quintessentially dancehall riddims, and RR is such a classic reggae riddim it didn't make sense to me to include it and not Satta Massagana, Drum Story, etc. But Bam Bam, Answer, and Stalag all precede the dancehall era too so idk...
