Maybe this will be mostly for me and forks, but this thread is long overdue. His soon-come second album Dela Splash is shaping up to be amazing. I don't think there's an official release date yet (should be 2020), but the first three singles are all superb.

Track of the year "Dela Move" invents nyabinghi-jazz-reggae-rap w/ darkly beautiful results:

"Same Prayer" w/ Kabaka Pyramid is warm & lovely but nowhere near as sui generis as "Dela Move"--that said, it's a good showcase for how tight his band is; I am in love with the flautist:

And just today there's "Cool as the Breeze/Friday," which I haven't heard enough yet to say anything much, but is funky and suggests he's moved on from taking dancehall to task on "Likes" to absorbing it in his own way:

(All these videos are dope btw.)

I could say lots more: going back to his earliest songs and the Dread & Terrible EP he's been impressive, Chronology tries to do too much but has lots of great tunes, and over the last couple years he's been a spotlight thief on a bunch of features.

On that note, I assume there are int'l features on this, so it's interesting that the only guest on these three is one of his longtime Jamaican collaborators--shows how he's always been very deliberate & thoughtful about his career. Tempted to speculate on who he picked (bracing myself for Sheeran), but really I just want to hear him and Koffee on the same track.

saw him live last year and it was p good but part of me couldn't help thinking that 'Coldplay reggae' is a thing now

lol I can both kind of see what you're saying while being deeply personally offended by it :)

But I'll admit Chronology def has that vibe at times. So far though the new ones sound darker and more unique, or at least I don't hear anything Martinesque in the above 3 tracks. Also, the edges get sanded off a lot of reggae live

it's really in relation to the track 'I Can' which is about as Capital Radio Millennium Whoop as it gets, but was also a standout moment in the set.

For so long I'd assumed that Chronixx was the name of a rubbish drum n bass / EDM duo

Yeah, i'm a fan! Basically i like anything chronixx does tho'.

you mean I Can? um. i gotta draw the line somewhere

haha yeah it's misguided and treacly, but I like his voice so much that sometimes I don't lunge for the skip button when it comes on

ahhh, haha. it's a bit of guilty pleasure I'll admit. I should check the rest of his stuff a bit more if you guys rate him

All of Dread and Terrible is good.

Lmao I should have figured it was I Can

D&T def a good place to start. I’ll throw together a playlist of faves and post it when I get a chance

wow “Dela Move” is fantastic

Tim F, Wednesday, 22 July 2020 23:58 (three years ago) link

It is! Been tempted to post it on the “extraordinary reggae” thread as a borderline troll, but it really does remind me of Cedric Brooks and Dadawah and the like

it's ace but i think i'm more into the produciton than the vocal

Never got much further than “Here Comes Trouble” and “Start a Fyah” with Chronixx, until Wizkid made me pay attention again. “Jam” is one of the highlights of the recent Starboy EP, and by far its most popular track.

This year’s singles are great, “Dela Move” obviously, but “Breeze/Friday” is a bop and three quarters too.

Just checked out “I Can” - the chorus is way to Coldplay-ey, but I like it fine outside that. Luckily there’s a Toddla T remix for some cool vibes, and one by J.L.L. (me neither) that stays closer to the spirit of the original but blurs out the Martinesquisms - I quite like it:

(icymi the video for “I Can” has balloons and a wedding - ahead of its time!)

I found this 2017 interview from the Chronology promotional cycle quite interesting:

(I've had to inform the i don't care if you're black, white, purple thread tho)

This has prompted me to dig Chronology out again and it's still great - the bass sounds so good even at low volume.

I had to skip I Can though, just too eager to please.

I Can is kind of cute though, even I have to admit

four months pass...

I haven't listened to the other versions nor the Sasco/Assassin EP yet, but I had to post this for forks ;)

Not sure what I think of this yet—I really wasn't expecting this sci-fi production from him—but I'm intrigued:

I had never listened to it before - thanx, year-end lists!

love, love, love the backing vocals.

yes, so good!

sean gramophone, Wednesday, 7 December 2022 21:30 (one year ago) link

oh I actually thought that had been posted, but it must've just been the Sault thread

It's definitely a good song. But I still think it's funny that this is maybe the most straight-up retro-sounding thing he's ever done, and it's hot-shit Inflo producing. Not that I'd complain if they did a whole project together, seems like Chronixx's long supposed-to-be-forthcoming album isn't going to happen :(

rob, Wednesday, 7 December 2022 21:50 (one year ago) link

yeah, I did a search and it was posted on the Sault thread, which is not a place I ever go to. my loss, I guess, but whatever.

imo you are on the right path

rob, Wednesday, 7 December 2022 21:58 (one year ago) link

btw, people who like that song and haven't ever heard, say, Freddie McGregor's Bobby Bobylon would probably flip for it (start with the title track if you just want a taste)
