rolling #metoo thread for sexual harassment in the music industry so no one misses out when artists we don't give a fuck about like Tim Westwood and Bassnectar get caught

It seems like a lot of the sexual harassment news of the last few years has either ended up in Weinsteins step down as Miramax CEOs or in individual artist threads like Ryan Adams and Swans: Classic or Dud? and Warped Tour 2004 and probably many more.

I just think it would do well to have a catch-all thread just for ILM. It seems like the news stories on this topic come and go and we don't get to see the full size of the issue. We could post news here or links to older revives in individual artist threads.

If this is a bad idea, feel free to let me know.

Anyways, here's Bassnectar:

No, I Do Not Want To Interview Bassnectar.

Here's Tim Westwood:

let's not forget that Tim Westwood is only one year younger than Theresa May (another child of the clergy) and uses a lot more grecian 2000. The real tragedy is he when got shot, the bullet didn't go right through his testicles. It all seems to have gone quiet about him and his grooming game. What an utter stain.

pretty glaring free pass still given to surviving classic rockers about this, feels like a conversation people want to postpone indefinitely

yeah the independent radio station i used to do a show for would send out emails about not playing music by the ducktails guy (for example) when sexual abuse allegations came out, but then people would still play james brown and led zeppelin all the time

I still fuck with Prince, David Bowie, Motley Crue. Nugent, Zeppelin, Aerosmith to lesser extent. I don't know why this is, but some of the songs are so emotionally resonant to me that I can't divorce myself from them. I honestly haven't even looked into what Prince has done.

No I mean grooming underage women

In 1990, 16-year-old Garcia met Prince backstage in Barcelona after he saw a tape of her dancing. After she graduated high school in Germany at the age of 17, Prince became her legal guardian.[14][4] Upon moving to Minneapolis, Prince and members of his team helped set her up with her own apartment. "At first, I stayed at the Sofitel, then they moved me to a nice little prairie house at the Country Suites, but I couldn't even make a cup of tea there, so they got me an apartment and rented furniture," she said.[15] At the age of 19, Prince instructed her to get on birth control thus beginning their sexual relationship.[4] After a four-year courtship, they married on February 14, 1996.[16]

I'd been wondering how Westwood managed to stay so protected - from the viewpoint of 2020 it feels weird to think of the extent to which he was the biggest and pretty much only gatekeeper for any British MC (and the only person playing most rap music in the UK full stop). We're talking about a 20-30 year period of dominance here.

The even grimmer conclusion is that because he was primarily targeting young black girls, no one really cared.

Matt DC, Friday, 10 July 2020 10:04 (two years ago) link

I'm surprised there isn't more concerted anger directed against him from some of the bigger grime stars (unless I've missed it) because he needs dragging down, what he gets away with is outrageous.

Yeah, my reading of Purple Rain was that The Kid was well on his way to becoming a piece of shit in the same vein as his father but music and Appolonia opened his eyes to his mistakes and gave him the strength to set his feet on a different path.

Also I don't mean to keep harping on this in the context of this thread but the Doomtree set was SO BAD, like half a step removed from Edina-Christian-youth-group-rapping-for-Jesus levels of bad

I wouldn't say it's hard, rather that my take on it was that he was projecting a stage persona most of the time and I hoped/assumed he turned it off when it wasn't appropriate (which is of course naive when actually considered but still).

i'm starting to think that being a sexual predator / sexual power dynamics are like the quiet part of what being a successful pop star is or has always been about - the open secret. some people really seemed to relish it / some people were reluctant participants but obviously that doesn't change the end result - the pain of countless women (and queers) who suffered abuse.

carin' (map), Friday, 10 July 2020 15:23 (two years ago) link

this is a little out-of-bounds of this thread but i have my theories about why sexual abuse is so commonly done by people in these positions of power. part of it is the alienation of being an industrial exploiter in an exploitative capitalist framework - that very easily translates into sexual exploitation.

I don't mean to say they don't know what they're doing, or to relieve them of an ounce of responsibility, but the defenses they come up with after the fact have a big element of "I thought this was ok at the time."

i believe there is, but not while they have the power and we bear the responsibility. education alone won't work. we need to be able to _enforce consequences_ on abusers. until then, i guess all i can do is collect binders and try to keep myself and the people i care about safe :(

I think I am more interested in the prevention side of this issue than the punishment/consequences side. I don't feel equipped to enforce consequences tbh; none of the people who have treated me or my friends abysmally have ever had any consequences in spite of our cataloguing of their behavior/binders of creeps. The only time I have been on the inside of a whisper network, I was either the whisperer myself or I was informed about someone whose behavior had already suggested to me that I need to keep my distance. (This dude who invited me on fb to play music with him and his girlfriend at night at their home even though we had never met? Nope, and then i heard about what a creep he is. I already could tell.)

However, I do know how to educate and that is where I tend to put my energy.

― Piggy Lepton (La Lechera)

i don't see them as separable, frankly. patriarchal misogyny doesn't just _tolerate_ bad behavior, it _rewards_ it. men who treat women with respect, or fail to perform abusive behaviors that are taken to be _normative_ male behavior, are mocked and punished for it, while men who excel in abusing women disproportionately reach positions of power, prestige, and success. without justice, we will have no peace. once again, they have the power, we bear the consequences. i don't say this to be defeatist, but to suggest that we should work as allies, collectively, to oppose and dismantle systems of oppression. i believe that we _can_ and _must_ do this for education to have any real, lasting effect.

Probably preaching to a choir, education is important and must be improved but also limited. I’m certain Butler knew very well what he was doing was wrong, he just chose to ignore it, or maybe even he did it precisely because it is evil. As long as the judicial system doesn’t treat sexual harrasment like other crimes, education is facing too uphill a climb.

I'm not sure if you still hold Mansun in such high regard, but Paul Draper is known as being a creep with a history of inappropriate behaviour towards women. His rants about Laura Snapes earlier this year (when he threatened to quit the music industry) were because she'd been working on an article about his behaviour for a while. It all came to light a few years ago when that band Estrons pulled out of supporting him as he sent inappropriate messages to the singer after the first night of the tour. I don't think it has been widely reported though.

I almost mentioned Draper in my post above! I still hold Mansun's work in high regard, yes - it certainly helps when the liked music pre-dates the apparently problematic period. I knew the Estrons incident - pathetic and extremely poor behaviour on his part - but didn't know Snapes had more dirt on him. His new album is almost insuperably bitter about this'n'that, some of which I presume to be his 'cancellation' - which doesn't exactly help matters. As I say, I know of the incident where he propositioned his tourmate on Facebook, and it's a black mark, but if there's more, well, I guess I'd better brace for it

it's a good question! for me it's a matter of radicalism vs. liberalism. there's this tendency for people with a liberal approach to oppose radical change on the grounds that it's unnecessary overreach, that liberal changes in and of themselves will bring about the desired results. basically i think that liberal approaches are necessary but not sufficient, and when people talk about liberal approaches as if they _are_ sufficient, it's an impediment to making radical change happen, and of, well, honestly, chastising radicals for not being more liberal. i think there's enough room for each of us to advocate for women in our own way!

totally -- some of my work is basically in "harm reduction" (not related to sexual assault) and the education/prevention aspect to that concept is a major thing! Like, what LL is talking about is a way to improve prevention of shitty things happening to people. Like, I feel that we are all compassionate, thoughtful people that agree that sexual assault (et al) is bad, and that we want to reduce, if not eliminate the bad things. I know I have a tendency to be impatient with radical idealism that doesn't focus on praxis and prevention/harm reduction, and I am trying to not take out a bunch of IRL frustration on this thread.

I think it's the opposite, everyone else who was working for the label left, and now he's running it himself. I saw a near-comical number of producers say they were pulling their upcoming releases, but it can be complicated to pull back catalog without the label's cooperation depending on how digital distro is done.
