From the Audio Foundation:

We are greatly saddened by the passing of Peter Stapleton, a Kaumātua (Elder) to the Audio Foundation and Ōtepoti (Dunedin) music communities and an artist respected and loved throughout the world.

An extraordinary and unique drummer, lyricist and improvisor – Peter has tirelessly produced astounding music for over 40 years – the Victor Dimisich Band, The Terminals, Scorched Earth Policy, Pin Group, Dadamah, EYE are legendary groups which have had an immense influence on alternative music in this country.

Peter ran the record label Metonymic which was responsible for documenting the vitality of the Dunedin noise and experimental scenes, and was a key organiser in the incredible and iconic Lines of Flight Festival.

Peter was involved with the Audio Foundation since inception in 2004 and will be remembered as a great artist and a gentle, encouraging, supportive and loved friend.

Our thoughts, love and support to Peter’s family, friends and colleagues.
