THIS SONG RULES

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 17:19 (four months ago) link

Maines is an absolute force

Indexed, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 17:40 (four months ago) link

I like the chorus a lot, and the bridge is good, but the verses feel pro forma

tamagotchi revival artist (morrisp), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 17:49 (four months ago) link

read this as “returns with Gallagher” and thought that would be an interesting collaboration

Piven After Midnight (The Yellow Kid), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 17:54 (four months ago) link

that chorus is devastating. instant classic imo

i will FP you and your entire family (rip van wanko), Friday, 6 March 2020 01:08 (four months ago) link

what a return

dyl, Friday, 6 March 2020 05:50 (four months ago) link

this is good but i also feel a little tired of antonoff's songwriting tics at this point

ufo, Friday, 6 March 2020 06:09 (four months ago) link

The lyrics are also a little frustrating for their lack of specificity (in a genre where lyrics can be very specific). I realize there’s only so much she can say about the actual facts surrounding her divorce, but I want the song to dish up more dirt on exactly how her ex is a “gaslighter” (and I know some folks here are sensitive to imprecise use of that term, lol).

tamagotchi revival artist (morrisp), Friday, 6 March 2020 06:54 (four months ago) link

(or it not actual “dirt,” then more evocatively vague allusions to it)

haha same

exploring the literal connotations of the term “gaslighter” while also employing the term properly =/= calling someone a gaslighter bc they disagree with you

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 6 March 2020 09:39 (four months ago) link

also i guess i have trouble identifying antonoff’s tics at this point bc i didn’t hear a lot of them here

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 6 March 2020 09:46 (four months ago) link

it feels reminiscent enough of something like "rollercoaster" which is his most recognisable songwriting style to my ears. he can often be pretty anonymous as a songwriter and producer but here his presence felt obvious

i especially like the bridge here though

Don't really get this complaint given the Hollywood and boat lyrics.

Indexed, Friday, 6 March 2020 15:06 (four months ago) link

Those lyrics don’t really explain how he’s a gaslighter. (The boat lyric at least alludes to him lying, the Hollywood line is just boilerplate.)

tamagotchi revival artist (morrisp), Friday, 6 March 2020 15:33 (four months ago) link

Immediately reminded me of Lou's "Strawman," another song that uses a specific buzzword as a title that leaves me wondering if the author knew the definition or merely liked the word as a title

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 6 March 2020 15:39 (four months ago) link

yet like "Strawman" it works terrifically in a chorus

This song is terrible. You're all insane.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 6 March 2020 15:42 (four months ago) link

oh shit maybe he's right, maybe this song IS terrible and we all ARE insane

they are apparently not permitted to talk about this record in interviews

I am meeting the Dixie Chicks to not discuss their new album, Gaslighter. It is their first in 14 years, but due to ongoing legal disputes, we cannot talk about it.

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 6 March 2020 17:13 (four months ago) link

So not allowed by who? They can legally record an album, play, release a single, but ... not talk about it? That's weird.

Kind of a lazy (fine) profile. I know it's been a while, and it's Allure, but credit to the band for pretending the Iraq/Bush thing was a novel line of questioning.

But I have to know, if they knew how deep the fallout would be, would they still have done it? "Oh, that's an interesting question," Maines says, pausing.

Yeah, interesting, I bet you've never thought or been asked about that before, lol.

this is fantastic

ufo, Friday, 1 May 2020 05:49 (two months ago) link

Not sure about this tune. It's growing on me.

I'm not in the "stay in your lane" Saving Country Music camp, but I still hope we get some fiddle on this record. "Gaslighter" was more of the modern-pop version of 2000s Dixie Chicks I was expecting from an Antonoff collab.

What do others think?

they're "the chicks" now. good on them imo

I find this depressing in ways I'm sure I shouldn't

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Thursday, 25 June 2020 16:00 (two weeks ago) link

unlike lady antebellum, they've earned the pivot imo. song is pretty good too!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 25 June 2020 16:39 (two weeks ago) link

In an additional statement provided by the group’s press representative, the Chicks added: “A sincere and heartfelt thank you goes out to ‘The Chicks’ of NZ for their gracious gesture in allowing us to share their name. We are honored to co-exist together in the world with these exceptionally talented sisters. Chicks Rock! — Emily, Natalie and Martie”

Why’d they drop the Dixie?

calstars, Thursday, 25 June 2020 16:48 (two weeks ago) link

idk what "earn the pivot" means in this context tbh

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Thursday, 25 June 2020 16:49 (two weeks ago) link

“We want to meet this moment,” the country-pop trio said in a one-sentence statement on its website, alluding to the change.

OG Honeymoon Ave (morrisp), Thursday, 25 June 2020 16:49 (two weeks ago) link

"pivot" to the new name
"earned" in the sense that they have been far more socially and culturally aware than most of the people in their musical community, aren't having a sudden awakening and have chosen to make the shift not with an extensive, PR written egotistical instapost but with a new song that's pretty damn good

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 25 June 2020 16:53 (two weeks ago) link

Do you think Lady Antebellum should have kept going with their name?

OG Honeymoon Ave (morrisp), Thursday, 25 June 2020 16:55 (two weeks ago) link

xp, also in that their name changes seems like it's coming from a genuine space as creators and artists and not as a sop to marketability.

morrisp: i didn't care one way or the other about lady antebellum's name but then, as a southern expat, i always associated "antebellum" with the architectural style over the era (as the band also claimed to have done); there are a lot more obvious and direct verbal markers of jim crow-to-now racism baked into the region's language.

I honestly think the only reason the band made that leap was because of the upcoming horror movie by the same name (which i dearly hope is funneling money into the Octavia Butler's estate), which looks to be a likely hit and which they surely didn't want to be directly associated with.

dang this is gonna end up being my favorite album of the year

"Chicks" has some baggage too, they should just go by "The"

I'd totally buy a record by "The"

frogbs, Thursday, 25 June 2020 17:06 (two weeks ago) link

I wonder if they paid Bill Payne a visit first

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Thursday, 25 June 2020 17:09 (two weeks ago) link

heh xp: icymi, my understanding is that the name hails from the little feat song

Love this band regardless of what they call themselves; though I'm not sure this was necessary, it's a nice show of solidarity.

Song is solid. Video is powerful. Recalls the Janelle Monae collab "Hell You Talmbout":

Indexed, Thursday, 25 June 2020 17:13 (two weeks ago) link

If they really wanna do this, ideally they'd match the marketing costs associated with this move (which seem to me to be considerably more than nothing) with a donation to [insert worthy bail fund/org]

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Thursday, 25 June 2020 17:18 (two weeks ago) link

... sure? Don't know that they haven't; there's like twenty orgs to support at the end of that video.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 25 June 2020 17:52 (two weeks ago) link

no way in hell they'd do that and not trumpet about it

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Thursday, 25 June 2020 18:02 (two weeks ago) link

i'm guessing you may not be aware of their history with "trumpeting donations"

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 25 June 2020 18:42 (two weeks ago) link

I suspect in the long term the principal beneficiaries of this move will be these rich white women. hope I'm wrong!

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Thursday, 25 June 2020 18:46 (two weeks ago) link

I would imagine that the "principal beneficiary" of _anyone_ changing their name because they don't like what it stands for is the person/people who are making that change.

Given their considerable and complex political history, they are a weird group to single out as "rich white women not making a difference" but whatever floats your boat.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 25 June 2020 19:40 (two weeks ago) link

I'd totally buy a record by "The"

They'd have to be The The, though--that name's open, I think.

This is a serious topic that I should stay clear of. They mean well, and that's good.

lol hilarious
