I do like the song, though; probably the best thing I've heard from her since "Edge of Glory"

I liked it too. I don't know if it's a good song or a bad song, and it sounds like Gaga imitating herself, but it still made me happy.

Lily Dale, Friday, 28 February 2020 16:57 (four years ago) link

Listened to it on Spotify looping for the last little while. It is much better without the video.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 28 February 2020 19:02 (four years ago) link

i remember hearing the song when it had leaked and it was fine i guess but nothing i felt compelled to return to

video looks horrible, not inclined to watch it in full at all. i imagine it feeling like a throwback to, like, "g.u.y." which was approximately when i began to worry to what extent she'd run out of ideas

In wikipedia credits-scanning news: does this song mark the official entry of successful producers Tchami and (previous Grimes collaborator!) Bloodpop into the Max Martin Hivemind

no, because bloodpop (formerly blood diamonds) co-produced literally all of joanne

OK, I agree that listening now with headphones -- and not watching the video! -- the song sounds a lot better (and less "pastiche-y") than it did at first.

Btw - on the elevator at work this morning, the guy standing next to me was prominently browsing shop.ladygaga.com on his big-azz iPhone (probably an 11 Pro, lol).

This song is okay!

And yeah, my default with a new songs out on YouTube over the last year or three is to listen without any video/visual, because if a video/visual is terrible it has some effect on how I feel about the music. Sometimes, honestly, I wonder why artists debut songs with videos - and wish they'd wait on that. Like, that gives you an extra chance to introduce the song to fans and potential fans.

Ainsley James Gryffyd Lowbeer Holdsworth (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 2 March 2020 22:23 (four years ago) link

digging the song at first listen. agreed that the video has a very short list of things to offer, but probably it suffers in comparison most to her 2009-2010 peak, and video budgets ain't what they used to be even then. but overall the song feels kinda like, if this had been waiting in the wings as a third single for artpop i would have felt much better about where she was headed at that time. and in 2020, yeah it's very comfortably within her wheelhouse, but i'm okay with that as some kind of statement that we're not just going to be getting "shallow" variations from here on out.

Yeah it's good. As an Ariana fan, I find her part underwhelming — her vocal isn't recorded very well(?) — but the track does the (admirable) trick of feeling 20-25 secs. too short, leaving you wanting more.

Inadequate grass (morrisp), Friday, 22 May 2020 04:34 (three years ago) link

(Ariana sounds great on "Stuck With U" -- so whatever's up on this song, I assume it's not just that she has a bad mic at her home studio, or whatever.)

Inadequate grass (morrisp), Friday, 22 May 2020 04:41 (three years ago) link

(...plus, the Gaga song was recorded prior to the pandemic, duh. it’s like I’m forgetting there was a “before times.”)

Inadequate grass (morrisp), Friday, 22 May 2020 06:20 (three years ago) link

ok, what bloghouse song is this reminding me of? i thought it was groovejet by spiller, but i think there's one that's closer.

I saw someone else get reminded of Cassius's Feeling For You. Is that what you're thinking of?

MarkoP, Friday, 22 May 2020 17:35 (three years ago) link

Isn't it really We In Life's "Grandlife?" The way the bassline descends and climbs is basically identical.

mr. milligan, Friday, 22 May 2020 17:48 (three years ago) link

Am hearing “Starlight” by Supermen Lovers.

Not really feeling this track, seems a bit basic for either of them, and Ariana sounds even more garbled than usual.

Roz, Friday, 22 May 2020 18:24 (three years ago) link

i think it was grandlife, thank you mr milligan.

also hearing notes of 'music sounds better with you'

sleight return (voodoo chili), Friday, 22 May 2020 18:27 (three years ago) link

the drop felt a little canned to me at first but it's a full on great track i think... glad she's back to making gaga music. video is hilarious too

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 May 2020 22:03 (three years ago) link

i've listened to this like a handful of times and it still sounds like they're both saying "i'd rather be drunk but at least i'm alive" to me lol

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 May 2020 22:05 (three years ago) link

I saw someone on Twitter who heard it the same way (I’ve been seeing the hype tweets all week, so have long been familiar w/the actual lyric, lol)

Inadequate grass (morrisp), Friday, 22 May 2020 22:25 (three years ago) link

idk how to feel about this one. It's competent but it feels like it plays it excessively safe which is something I don't want or expect out of this collaboration.

^Good take. A bunch more listens has sort of pushed it into the "trending negative" column for me.

A guy in the car next to me today was playing this song, and getting into it (hand movements, etc.). It seems to really have some heat, wonder how high it will debut on the chart.

Inadequate grass (morrisp), Sunday, 24 May 2020 21:25 (three years ago) link

could very well debut at #1, as numerous songs have this year. the more important question is whether it will show staying power beyond that, since some of the year-to-date's number-one debuts might not

i think the song is just okay so i am not the best judge of its commercial prospects. it is definitely better than "stupid love" tho

lmao at the misheard lyric, even after knowing that was incorrect i still couldn't figure out what the real lyric was until looking it up!!

dyl, Sunday, 24 May 2020 22:12 (three years ago) link

I am sort of disappointed that after Joanne (which I really liked), Gaga seems to be sort of aesthetically retreating. But I’m not a Little Monster, maybe this move hits the sweet spot for her core fans.

Inadequate grass (morrisp), Sunday, 24 May 2020 22:20 (three years ago) link

any ariana song is gonna go no 1... she just did it last week. i think it's a good song personally and will have staying power at the top of the chart. it was a very well chosen feature by gaga.

i don't necessarily consider the song safe ... it does feel a bit fossilized w/ the drop and all but i think the time was right for a back to basics record for her after the artpop-joanne b2b. "shallow" + star is born made it cool to like her again, in that sense i think she's already accomplished the difficult part. following it up w/ a feel good party-ish kinda record that's like, "remember when we all loved me" w/ a few new twists makes a lot of sense to me. also think it's when her songwriting is at its best.

J0rdan S., Monday, 25 May 2020 01:36 (three years ago) link

also think the video will carry it far

J0rdan S., Monday, 25 May 2020 01:37 (three years ago) link

this song has totally demolished the gays already, it's gonna do just fine

I feel you on this. I guess I was hoping she’d “take it to another level,” but that’s probably an unreasonable thing to expect from any artist.

Inadequate grass (morrisp), Monday, 25 May 2020 02:48 (three years ago) link

I like this! But I like her best when she's at her most conventional. I barely hear Grande.

I thought the song with Elton John would be like an awful Cheek to Cheek-esque thing but boy was I wrong!

two weeks pass...

Rain on Me debuted at #1, week 2 dropped to #5, week 3 dropped to #10.

skip, Thursday, 18 June 2020 00:27 (three years ago) link

that's pretty good for a song launched to #1 based overwhelmingly on pent-up hype, a simultaneous track/video premiere, and a plainly charts-driven digital retail strategy. like, the trajectories of a couple others recently fitting that description:

1 - 12 - 15 - 16 - 17 - 22 - 25 (travis scott & kid cudi "the scotts")
1 - 13 - 15 - 17 - 20 (ariana grande & justin bieber "stuck with you")

all are being buoyed somewhat by airplay gains, even those for which direct consumption (sales/streams) is running out of steam fast. they could all eventually find a real mass audience, but i wouldn't count on it. of the three, i'd say "rain on me" may be the likeliest to actually become a 'real' hit

finally trying this album on at full length, not too much is grabbing me so far but "stupid love" sounds even better in context. also gives me this powerful Max Tundra deja vu around the glitchy edges - she should hire him for some remixes, he deserves the paycheck.

Somewhat incredibly, “Rain on Me” is the first all-woman collab to win a Grammy for best pop duo/group performance.
