one month passes...

this weekend is London's top punk weekender of the year - Static Shock Weekend.

I bought tickets for Thursday and Saturday ages ago but wasn't sure if I would be up to going out yet, but I think I'm going to give it a go.

Thursday I'm looking forward to seeing Special Interest and Powerplant. Haven't heard the Livid demo yet.

Chubby & The Gang are playing on Friday and I do really like that album so pity I'll miss them but oh well

Saturday looks awesome though. A load of bands I like: Permission, Strong Boys, Obsessio, Muro, Disguise, Dark Thoughts, Idiota Civilizzato, Subdued, Irreal. The only pain in the arse about it is it always overruns so I'll most likely miss Muro to get the last train just like I missed Warthog last year and Pharmakon at the one before that.

new home blitz is incredible!!

flopson, Thursday, 20 August 2020 05:39 (ten months ago) link

ok it's quite not punk lol... but i think Col Poo will like it

flopson, Thursday, 20 August 2020 05:51 (ten months ago) link

Colonel Poo - did you end up going to Static Shock Weekend? and if so, was it your last show pre-COVID?

that wouldn't be a bad way to go out!

alpine static, Thursday, 20 August 2020 06:11 (ten months ago) link

iirc he posted about it on special interest thread.. lucky bastard ;)

flopson, Thursday, 20 August 2020 06:25 (ten months ago) link

I like Home Blitz, I have one of their albums. They covered Cock Sparrer on it iirc so I think that makes them eligible for this thread.

I did go to Static Shock Weekend, but only the Thursday (Special Interest night) and Saturday (Muro headlined that but I had to leave about 5 mins into their set to get the last train). tbh I was really not in the right place to be at the Saturday one, I didn't really want to be around people and I ended up eating too many edibles and having to sit in the corner for half of it. Thursday was good though.

It wasn't the last gig I went to pre-COVID, I went to see Snuff (90s pop-punk band) in Hastings the weekend after. I'm not a massive fan of them but I hadn't seen them since I was 18 and they were playing where I live so I figured I'd go.

Digging the home blitz

billstevejim, Wednesday, 26 August 2020 19:10 (nine months ago) link

Old friends from the Bay Area have an new record coming out...

Live they have a definite psych-punk fury that's really engaging, this feels a little tame to me but it's also been some years since I've seen them live. Maybe some of you might dig!

Really digging this

Went from faster punk stuff to a kind of Masshysteri vibes leavened with weirdness and UK DIY vibes.

some good stuff there, although I wasn't blown away by some of those (Loud Night, Warwound, the Lebenden Toten one is a live album so it's all songs I already have)

my favourites on there are Clock of Time, Permission, Geld, Muro (both records) & Subdued. also liked Kobra, Cadenaxo, Mutant Strain, Destruct and Life.

that is good!

one of my former students is in a few Philly bands, including these spaztic skronkers:

also this group that kind of sounds like a sloppier James Chance, very no-wave.

i love it

i was thinking we could just have a decadal rather than yearly thread since these threads rarely get more than a couple dozen posts it's not too unwieldy. could get a mod to change it to 2020-2029

really nice tape by taqbir from morroco

i know this thread's for new releases but i'd never heard this before, old early 80s nyhc feat. members of bad brains
and cro mags

flopson, Thursday, 11 February 2021 07:11 (four months ago) link

That Taqbir is excellent, thank you.

great Finnish hardcore, kinda metal/Motörhead sounding

flopson, Thursday, 11 March 2021 06:41 (three months ago) link

some of this is probably too garage-y/sheer mag-y for the real punks, but i'm loving the new album "tears of joy" by chicago's own the sueves:

flopson, Saturday, 5 June 2021 22:21 (two weeks ago) link

have ticket to see Chubby & The Gang in December. imagine that, going to see a band live. I mean hopefully that won't be the first time I see that happen.

bovarism, Saturday, 5 June 2021 22:24 (two weeks ago) link

they're only touring uk, right?

flopson, Saturday, 5 June 2021 22:26 (two weeks ago) link

in theory my first live experience since March 2020 is gonna be a garage rock all-dayer in July but it's literally the day after my 2nd vaccine so that might not happen. some good bands tho and it's free. Dirty Contacts/Baron Four/Oh! Gunquit. might be outside the remit of this thread

bovarism, Saturday, 5 June 2021 22:26 (two weeks ago) link
