While we're patiently waiting for the results to flow in
As we all think we made a perfect job of not forgetting anything
Let's have a playlist of great songs that passed us by or where we just messed up

Technically speaking, all of them.

I voted before getting into U.F.O.F. — if I were voting now, I’d probably make room for “Cattails.”

I wanted to capture that moment when you're fresh out of an exam or job interview and so many ideas are suddenly pouring into your head.
Also to mention the ones that narrowly missed your list.
But you're right results will put all these under a new light, but for now we can still speculate.

Well, this didn't necessarily 'pass me by' when voting. But it was definitely one of my favorite tracks of the year, and I didn't even nominate it. Just seemed far too niche to gain any traction and get any votes: 'Varg - Wear it (100.000 Petals Fell Like Rain)' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5BFVziKhuA

Seems to perfectly capture something about how being on social media felt in 2019, at least to me - streams of alternating longing and sadness, listnessness and boredom, a drifting obsession with celebrity and consumption, a feeling both intensely intimate and completely alienated; this really struck a chord for me.

Actually Varg shot up to being one of my fave artists after listening to his stuff quite a bit last year. To my ears anyway, he seemed to be really working hard to convey something about the present, something that sounds and feels contemporary. This cruel optimism take on mindfulness, for instance, is another standout: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9jODQqyI7M

I'm also a fan of his straight techno moments, the way they punctuate his records between these more personality-driven experiments: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htfkAAxdbZ0

might as well admit now that I didn't vote for Balloon

rob, Sunday, 26 January 2020 15:47 (four years ago) link

I would also have voted for "Ballin'" if I'd heard it in time

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Monday, 27 January 2020 14:13 (four years ago) link

Mashrou Leila -“radio romance”. Sad that nobody nommed them as they were a big part of my 2019

danzig, Monday, 27 January 2020 15:24 (four years ago) link

My second biggest regret is that I didn't nom any of the Rema EPs. Both of them are great and I've played the Bad Commander EP more than most things in 2019.

POLL: Ballin’ or Balloon, which non-vote is worse?

breastcrawl, Monday, 27 January 2020 17:26 (four years ago) link

Wear it (100.000 Petals Fell Like Rain)

Awww heck, this was one of my favorite tracks of the year too, but it did not make my ballot. However, the album did. Hope it places.

lmao true (plus I'm drinking coffee while posting this)
I do like Balloon but it didn't quite turn into a "track of the year" for me. That said I'm listening to it now and regretting* being too cool for the party, I'll be delighted when it places...possibly very very high--BALLOON--from what everyone is saying

*OTOH longneck didn't vote my #1 album and Nabozo didn't vote for my #1 track so screw you guys :)

rob, Tuesday, 28 January 2020 14:40 (four years ago) link

I'm truly heartbroken that I forgot to vote for African Giant. It was honestly the only album that mattered to me in 2019, but I had about five minutes to get my poll done and missed voting for some of my obvious fave tracks as well. Oh well. Next time.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 22:07 (four years ago) link

Imagine how truly heartbroken we will all be when it misses the AOTY title by just 49 points!

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 28 January 2020 22:11 (four years ago) link

aw no worries longneck! btw, I did vote for Joro breastcrawl, if that at all makes up for my Balloon grinchiness

rob, Tuesday, 28 January 2020 22:15 (four years ago) link

That’s unexpected and sweet, rob. It still isn’t going to place, too bad, even though it was my #1 - which means, and let’s get this out of the way here and now as well, “Balloon” was not!

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 28 January 2020 22:23 (four years ago) link

also if Soundman had come out earlier, I think something from that would have made my tracks ballot, it got a little lost for me in end-of-year catching up madness

rob, Tuesday, 28 January 2020 22:26 (four years ago) link

Same here, I figured there were plenty of Wizzy noms already. But in the end I only voted for one more besides “Joro”. Harsh on the guy, but whaddayado?

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 28 January 2020 22:30 (four years ago) link

“Electric” and “Cover Me” are EOY-worthy tracks for me.

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 28 January 2020 22:34 (four years ago) link

I like "Blow" a lot too, but given how I spent the year lamenting the non-appearance of Made In Lagos, the whole thing (well, minus "Mine") is an unexpected treat

rob, Tuesday, 28 January 2020 22:53 (four years ago) link

But for real, Rema is the one I had on repeat throughout 2019 - I was kinda shocked to see that no one had nommed Lady, which just bowls me over everytime it comes on. It's not Dumebi, but it's not too far behind. And even Obama had Ironman (not Dumebi) on his EOY list.

longneck, paging you from the Afro 2020 thread!

thanks - definitely an interesting development!

After hearing Mr Eazi's brand new song "Kpalanga", I regret not nominating his & Simi's "Doyin", a similar pseudo-psychedelic Killertunes production:

For me the greatest song that didn't place is Brown Skin Girl. All other things being equal, it would have deserved at least a top 30.

Nabozo, Sunday, 2 February 2020 07:03 (four years ago) link

my most-played 2019 song in 2020 has been this one

idk why I didn't nominate Mostack's "Respect & Love" which I have been obsessed with for months:
