The album is a concept album in which many of the songs explore how sex, money, and excess are viewed, exploited, and trivialized in American culture, although the album's biggest hit song, "More Than Words", deals more generally with the topics of love and relationships. "Hole Hearted" is often misinterpreted as a man singing about his lost love, a woman. While "Hole Hearted" is about lost love, it is between the singer and God, not a woman. It is the story of a man missing his relationship with God and being left empty without it regardless of material excesses.

Broader themes throughout the album hint at the decadence and temptations of modern American society in general.

"Lil Jack Horny" was definitely wannabe Crue but it worked, wasn't quite skeezy enough but it works.

god I can't believe how many times I played this cassette lol.

sorry saw my Queensryche poll pop up and was inspired to start this one.

in retrospect this album basically does a lot of what Aerosmith was attempting during their second peak era of the late '80s to early '90s, except for the most part more successfully imo. and there's a lot of Sunset Strip in the sound as well as bands like Sweet and other glam groups. It's also immaculately played and produced and a blast throughout.

omar little, Friday, 17 January 2020 01:33 (four years ago) link

More Than Words sounds like some type of When the Children Cry-type pap at first pass but it's a lot better.

omar little, Friday, 17 January 2020 01:35 (four years ago) link

yeah it's a ton of fun. I even got my kid brother into this album. we'd sing most of it on the way to work at Steak 'n Shake.

Nuno's work on the album is pretty fantastic, and Cherone sounds good here, though I preferred his vocals on III Sides to Every Story (actually also a good album ,featuring "Rest in Peace")

papa stank (Neanderthal), Friday, 17 January 2020 01:35 (four years ago) link

xpost some kid at music camp brought his acoustic guitar and used to play that in an attempt to pick up women

it worked.

papa stank (Neanderthal), Friday, 17 January 2020 01:36 (four years ago) link

they did kinda do the Van Halen thing with the big harmonized choruses shadowing the lead vocal. even though I wouldn't compare teh two bands or anything. kinda surprised he didn't do as well vocally in Van Halen, but I suspect he didn't really know what he was in for there.

decadence dance is really a ballroom blitz for the pop metal era.

omar little, Friday, 17 January 2020 01:38 (four years ago) link

I can hear that, definitely

papa stank (Neanderthal), Friday, 17 January 2020 01:41 (four years ago) link

we're going to be the only ones posting on here

III Side to Every Story is one i never heard, that rolled around right after my music taste kinda shifted via Achtung Baby/Out of Time/Nevermind/Ten/etc...while i never completely abandoned this type of music, at least the albums i already owned, it mostly went to the back burner and all those huge classic pop metal albums had these disappointing followups that i ignored. well except Adrenalize, everyone bought that one and their childhood died.

i remember one thing that kinda threw me when i bought this album at age 15 was that for all its imagery, which makes you imagine it'll be this really explicit and profanity-laced GNR type thing, it's iirc 100% clean. some innuendos here and there but nothing particularly lascivious.

omar little, Friday, 17 January 2020 18:14 (four years ago) link

"Hole in My Heart" for the tight acoustic strumming and b/c it's not overplayed, nor was it ever.

xpost lol, omar otm

I should break this thing back out. I think I got it for my...14th birthday? That seems right. Pretty sure I also received a copy of Jesus Jones's Doubt that day. Listened to this a bazillion times back then but it was right on the cusp of the early-'90s alternanation so it got sidelined fairly quickly. I'm sure I still remember at least half of it by heart.

throughout this album it's also as if they're going for a bit of a Living Colour thing, and they don't sound 100% dissimilar to them.

Nuno has been Rihanna''s guitarist for the past few tours, right?

I remember seeing the "Get the Funk Out" (lol) video on Headbanger's Ball and thinking how unusual it was, at the time, for a hard rock band whose drummer had short hair.

Holy shit is this video totally, exactly ... whatever year this was:

Trying to listen to this album now and wow, is Decadence Dance long or what?

This was once my favourite album. I was 14. Still holds up. Same case for III Sides, but that one can get pretty syrupy at times. I'm such a big Nuno fan that by now (43 years old) I own two of his signature guitars (Washburn N4's). I'm not sure if he still plays with Rihanna, but there are some great youtube ideas out there with him playing shreddy solo's live with her band. Since I know way too much about this band, I can also tell those few interested that they supposedly have a new album coming out next year.

lol I was super into this album when it came out. Hole Hearted is a legit good single, although I am tempted to vote for Get the Funk Out

ugh...so my PROS and CONS

PRO

-Nuno's guitar solo

CON

-Cherone sounds terrible, and is auto-tuned to hell - his voice may be shot
-production is so sterile and generic
-basically Extreme trying to sound like Danny Wimmer Festival rock
-song is terribly written
