I decided to use the same playlist link as 2019, it's easier to just update and erase every year than to keep a separate playlist for each year. Everything previous has been added to a dump archive playlist named 2012-202x.

So far I'm really liking these ones:

Wild Nothing - Foyer
Easy Life feat. Arlo Parks - Sangria
Selena Gomez - Rare
Grimes - Blue Swan Blues

I might get bored of these ones but liking them at the moment:

The Orielles - Space Samba (Disco Volador Theme)
Destroyer - Cue Synthesizer
People Taking Pictures - Adventure Shit
of Montreal - You've Had Me Everywhere

“Rare” (the track) is already a shoo-in for my 2020 EOY list.

I might have to do a January list as well. It's been an extremely strong start to the year, including a bunch of strong or high potential LPs that only dropped today.

In the meantime, here's my first Spotify playlist for 2020:

Jeff W, Friday, 31 January 2020 19:56 (five months ago) link

Shopping - For Your Pleasure

Dinsdale, Saturday, 1 February 2020 08:19 (five months ago) link

And I never expected it to be so but the new Pearl Jam single 'Dance of the Clairvoyants' is also a favorite of mine

"Ray Guns" by Georgia is awesome. The heavy percussion, the addition of the chord progression near the end a la "Velvet" by The Big Pink, there's a lot going on.

Mentioned by uly a week ago amongst many others, but "Simmer" by Hayley Williams is prob the first "single" to really pop my ears up this year.

Tink album is much better than I was expecting, well worth checking out.

Starting listening to the Moses Sumney and was enjoying it - but when I realised this just the first half of the LP and there's a shedload more of it due in May, decided I'll tackle it properly then.

Now contemplating whether to listen to TWO Princess Nokia albums lol

Jeff W, Saturday, 29 February 2020 19:03 (four months ago) link

Digging in on the tink a bit more; it's worth exploring i think

You should jump in on the sumney now; i think he'll ultimately have one album of strong material spread out over two so you can start chopping up the current one now and not slog through everything.

I got through about three sample tracks from each P Nokia album and uh i am not likely to go back for more.

March's general terror has cut down the more voracious elements of my erratic listening habits as I search desperately for anything that can calm me down. That something has absolutely been the stunning and sterling Alabaster DePlume - To Cy and Lee: Instrumentals v. 1 which is definitely gonna be among my faves this year. Lots has been said already about influences and connections but I just heard the throughline with Haruomi Hosono so I thought I'd mention that here.

Close seconds in terms of playtime and benefit to my life are the twin lesbian country powerhouses Katie Pruitt - Expectations and Brandy Clark - Your Life is a Record; both are outrageously good and boast amazing moments of peak 2020 songwriting.

Two singles that capture the moment: iMarkkeyz + Cardi B's "Coronavirus" (likely novelty track of the year, seems to have faded more and more into the background as people are dying though) and JACK QUARTET's version of Cenk Ergün's "Sonare" (sounds exactly like the wasps in my mind, it somehow helps to externalize them).

Otherwise there was much rejoicing with each of the following:

Malicorne - Colin (1974, been a long time, now seemed a likely good time to come back. it was)
Lone - Not Seeing is a Flower (2019, another one that resurfaced for calm)
Jeremy Cunningham - The Weather Up There
Tink - Hopeless Romantic
The Secret Sisters - Saturn Return
Selena Gomez - Rare (yeah, "Lose You To Love Me" and the Cudi track aside, this is great more or less all the way through isn't it? Maybe the best straight pop album i've heard this year; let's see if Dua Lipa compares)
Ghetto Maria - Straight from the DEC (1996, hat-tip to Yelploaf on the Random old rap you are loving thread; how have i missed these guys till now?)
McCoy Tyner - Extensions (1970, likely my fave of his albums. RIP)
Katie Pruitt - OurVinyl Live
Edwin Birdsong - s/t (1979, again: going back to things that make me happy and this is bulletproof)

Simmy and Sino Msolo - Ngihamba Nawe
Ogranya and Efya - Wicked Somebody
Sauti Sol - Suzanna
Christopher Martin (NOT Chris Martin) and Busy Signal - Why
Jason Isbell and 400 Unit - Only Children (really looking forward to this album)
Run the Jewels - Ooh LA LA
Hailu Mergia - Yene Mircha
Body Count - No Remorse, Bum Rush (still got it)
2Baba and Wizkid - Opo
Pabllo Viattar and Thalia - Timida
Rose Royce - Love Don't Live Here Anymore (1978, somehow never heard this before!)
Evan Olson - So Much Better (1999, podcasts suck and this one kinda did too but i skipped to the end and liked the song!)
RAMP - Daylight (1977, repeated listening helps the crazy)
Jada Kingdom - Heavy!
Chronixx - Dela Move
JASSS - Turbo Olé
Hayley Williams - Simmer (Caroline Polachek Remix) (This one grew on me!)
Mr JazziQ - Blue Skies
Zug - Fantasia
Don Toliver, Kaash Paige, Travis Scott - Euphoria
Pantha du Prince - Supernova Space Time Drift
Jusca X Plee, Zing Master(!!?!?) and Mabozza - Empa Nna
Stussko - Spacefunk

On Deck
Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia
Daniel Avery and Alessandro Cortini - Illusion of Time

Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad - Jazz is Dead 001
Move D and Benjamin Bruun - Let's Call It a Day

Blanck Mass - Calm with Horses OST
Four Tet - Sixteen Oceans
Shabaka and the Ancestors - We Are Sent Here By History
Christine and the Queens - La Vita Nuova
Lil Uzi Vert - Eternal Atake
Megan Thee Stallion - Suga
Claudio x Kenza - Circle of Life

Cool! I'm checking out that Osunlade now (and then diving into the new Arca).

Oh and obviously the Alabaster dePlume album is on my list, I need to check out that Soccer96 one too.

Big big fan of all the releases Nídia has out on the Príncipe label this year, but especially her full-length, Não Fales Nela Que A Mentes

handsome boy modelling software (bernard snowy), Monday, 29 June 2020 21:18 (one week ago) link

hey forks, good to see some of my choices resonate :-) will investigate your list further.

what’s the deal with the Son Tùng M-TP album? I love some of his songs (“Lac Trôi”!!!) Is he especially good live? Did you see the movie?

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 30 June 2020 11:46 (one week ago) link

Wow that Soccer96 EP is really fun, didn't expect it to go full post-punk/DFA.

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 30 June 2020 14:45 (one week ago) link

yeah, "i was gonna fight fascism" is a single of the year contender for me i think

Breastcrawl, you are among my fave DJs for sure. RE: Son Tung, I'm at a point where I listen to anything he releases; he and his production is consistently strong (Lac Troi is a bombshell but Chay Ngay Di and Chung Ta Khong Thuoc Ve Nhau are also bangers). Sky Tour is just a live set from his concert film but it's pretty strong throughout. Don't remember if I found him on ILX or not...?

[apologies for lack of proper accent marks for ST M-TP]

The Lila Iké is awesome. I might yet start a thread for her.

Despite everything, this is turning into an amazing year for records.

Maybe a dumb observation, but being stuck at home i think gives you more time to explore and see what's available.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 30 June 2020 16:17 (one week ago) link

true and yet I am like a month behind on the afropop thread yet again :/

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 30 June 2020 17:02 (one week ago) link

Yeah what I heard of that sounded really intriguing. I'm also curious about his opera based on The Loser (Thomas Bernhard novel) but have been waiting for a time when my availability, energy, attention, mood, etc are all in alignment

handsome boy modelling software (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 30 June 2020 17:09 (one week ago) link

forks, maybe you found out about ST M-K here: Vietnamese Music/Music in Vietnam. Then again, TSJ covered him a few times over the years as well, I think. Anyways, the songs you mentioned are some of my faves as well. I even like his collabo with Snoop Dogg.
