Rap's Best Guests

Not a poll but a place to discuss rappers who most consistently shine on others' songs. I always love Devin The Dude and Jadakiss guest spots but, for longevity and adaptability, Scarface is my top choice.

Scarface is like top 5 all-time material so yeah

you know who is a great rapper that is usually totally boring on others' songs is Jay-Z

Οὖτις, Thursday, 26 September 2019 19:55 (four years ago) link

Yeah, Jay is mostly solid when featured but the only albums of his I still enjoy are Reasonable Doubt and Volume 3. Drake is another though his albums are a non-starter for me. I suspect that this thread will skew ‘90s.

Yelploaf, Thursday, 26 September 2019 20:36 (four years ago) link

Haha, I misread your post. Come to think of it, Jay stunk up plenty of guest spots, ‘Ha’ maybe the most egregious.

Yelploaf, Thursday, 26 September 2019 20:38 (four years ago) link

if Andre 3000 only ever featured, he’d have a respectable career. I’ll say the same for Project Pat

Yelploaf, Thursday, 26 September 2019 20:49 (four years ago) link

pre-death I would've said ODB

Οὖτις, Thursday, 26 September 2019 20:50 (four years ago) link

i would mostly always appreciate hearing Q-Tip's voice on songs

is this just gonna turn into a youtube thread of great guest spots or what

Οὖτις, Thursday, 26 September 2019 20:53 (four years ago) link

cuz here's a great latter-day Q-Tip one

Yes, lots of YouTubes, please. Tip is great and I probably first heard him on ‘Groove is in the Heart’. Stupidly, I still hold my teenage resentment that he flipped the ‘Drink Away the Pain’ concept to fashion (though understandable as he’d recently become Muslim).

Yelploaf, Thursday, 26 September 2019 20:58 (four years ago) link

Both Bun B and Pimp C for a while. Luda of course had a glorious few years.

JoeStork, Thursday, 26 September 2019 20:59 (four years ago) link

It always cracks me up hearing Master P doing his best to ruin Bun B’s verse on here a couple minutes in.

I couldn't ever really take a full album of Busta but love him as a guest

luda and busta were big personality dudes who could grate over the course of a project but were amazing in 16-bar doses.

xp agreed granny

xxp I recognize now that he opts for retail therapy over E&J.

Yelploaf, Thursday, 26 September 2019 21:09 (four years ago) link

oh yeah can't forget busta The Scenario verse is all time

(•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 26 September 2019 21:09 (four years ago) link

lil wayne had a year (pre-CIII) where he challenged himself to say yes to every guest verse offer. the songs were a mixed bag, but wayne was usually on point.

flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Thursday, 26 September 2019 21:09 (four years ago) link

lol yeah I have never once wanted to listen to an entire Busta Rhymes album

xp

e-40 usually brings it in his guest verses

Luda absolutely my first thought and MVP of guest spots

I thought of 40 too but would you say his guest verses are *better* than his own/solo verses? cuz I don't think so, he's just remarkably consistent overall.

Oh yeah, Tragedy is the star of The War Report. Also, Cappadonna for Winter Warz though I guess he’s a feature on all Wu stuff. I’ve wondered if the other Wu members were annoyed by the number of times that Cap’s name appears on the Forever track list.

Cool Breeze never really got anywhere solo but he’s great on “Dirty South” and “Decatur Psalm.”

JoeStork, Thursday, 26 September 2019 21:52 (four years ago) link

I thought of Redman but for me he's like E40, v consistent no matter what

meth is def a guy who was better on guest verse. a lot of his solo work was excellent, but he really shines on other people's tracks (the what, buck 50, etc.)

"Watch For the Hook" is classic but he does kind of feel like a guest on his own song, that's a good album though

totally....
though i don't understand the parameters people seem to think that people can't have good albums and are only good as guets? doesn't make sense to me but

my point being kool g is absolutely an all time guest but has classic albums too

speaking of busta.....WOOOOOW
