Very well...

Clientele - Suburban Light
Hot Chip - Made in the Dark
David Wrench - The Atomic World of Tomorrow

[31/50]

Thought about the Clientele but wasn't sure it was eligible given it was largely 90s material. Will vote for it if it is.

Nick Holder - Swimming

22/30

Looked a dead cert for relegation but that 30 point safety mark is sliding into view now, if we can just nick a point off Zvezda Perm before last orders we might even stay up

ALBUM

The Brave Little Abacus - Masked Dancers: Concern in So Many Things You Forget Where You Are

51/51 (FP'ed)

(I haven't actually heard this album in full yet but I think it belongs in The Conversation)

Anyway, ***NOMINATING IS NOW CLOSED***

I'll be back in a few days (might be nearer a week, let's see) once the playlists and spreadsheets have been compiled to present a voting thread.

IN THE MEANTIME, USE THIS THREAD FOR CAMPAIGNING AND SUCH

See you shortly!

I'm all out. Have listed every record I can think of or remember

saer, Sunday, 15 September 2019 09:41 (four years ago) link

I see where I was confused now. I checked the date on the back of the Maryanne Amacher CD but the CD I checked was , not Sound Characters. This means I have to choose between Sound Characters 2 and "Transit" - I will stick with "Transit". 2xp

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Sunday, 15 September 2019 09:43 (four years ago) link

Uh, the CD I checked was Sound Characters 2.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Sunday, 15 September 2019 09:43 (four years ago) link

Heh, tt, I was hoping someone would nominate "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" since it didn't end up in my 50 but I do feel like it was important and I did like it. I'm glad you nominated the album.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Sunday, 15 September 2019 09:45 (four years ago) link

I had a last minute pang of conscience that some of my favourites of the era still hadn't been nominated. I'm glad you covered Mew and Final Fantasy too!

tangenttangent, Sunday, 15 September 2019 09:48 (four years ago) link

Oh and tt, Cell-Scape was definitely already nominated so we can pretend your 50th was my special bonus album

imago, Sunday, 15 September 2019 09:49 (four years ago) link

Oh, so it was! Okay, yes that works out well

tangenttangent, Sunday, 15 September 2019 09:52 (four years ago) link

Ha, happy to help, tt. I just checked if anyone nominated "The Suffering", which they didn't, but I see you nominated a Coheed & Cambria album that I haven't heard. I'll give it a listen.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Sunday, 15 September 2019 09:59 (four years ago) link

the main records i wanna strongly advocate for are Sheena Ringo's Shouso Strip and Kalk Samen Kuri no Hana

Shouso Strip is an inventive alt rock album, kinda reminiscent of stuff like The Bends in its anthemic nature but jazzier (in that way kinda similar to some of Fiona Apple's more rock-adjacent work?), noisier, and more electronics. one of my favourite rock albums ever

Kalk Samen Kuri no Hana is probably best described by the nebulous term of 'art pop', as it's more focused on elaborate orchestration but there's still some electronics and part of her previous jazzy alt-rock style in the mix too. there's not really anything else that sounds quite like it, probably the go-to comparison would be Post/Homogenic-era Bjork but that's still not very close and they're very different songwriters too.

ufo, Sunday, 15 September 2019 10:01 (four years ago) link

Crap, I forgot Nagamani Srinath's Sunada. I wasn't sure about the release date but it was 2000. Really good Carnatic vocal album. Guess it's no longer a lock for the top 10.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Sunday, 15 September 2019 10:03 (four years ago) link

Kalk Samen... will be very high up my albums ballot, and its fifth track, Yattsuke Shigoto, will be very, very high up my tracks ballot, because on an already stellar album it stands out as one of the greatest moments in all pop imo

a few big omissions from the 00s Dance tracks poll results

Black Leotard Front - Casual Friday
Oni Ayhun - OAR003 B
(btw I think the Ayhun track silverfish nominated is from 2010 although probably was out there before vinyl release?)
Ricardo Villalobos - Dexter
Ellen Allien & Apparat - Way Out (although the album should do well)
Zed bias - Neighborhood
(I came very close to nominating this although iirc it was released in the very last week of 1999)
Alter Ego - Rocker
Blawan - Getting Me Down
Green Velvet - La La Land

Another big omission that should be viewed very brightly

The Fish Brothers And Eastend ‎– We All Shout The Millwall Song

Nelly - Country Grammar (Hot Shit)

Wow! Can’t believe this went un-nom’d until Dyl hit it

#YABASIC (morrisp), Sunday, 15 September 2019 15:54 (four years ago) link

Someone upthread nominated this track:

Thee Madkatt Courtship III - My Life Musik

But both the single and the album its on came out in 1999, otherwise I would've nommed them myself.

Tuomas, Sunday, 15 September 2019 16:17 (four years ago) link

don't know about the others but blawan's "getting me down" didn't come out until 2011 xp

right, that poll seemingly covered the century so far despite being labelled as for the 00s

nashwan, Sunday, 15 September 2019 16:21 (four years ago) link

_XP: Oooh, I considered So, but figured I'd be the sole vote. Nice.
_

It really was one of my favourite albums of that year and still sounds beautiful to me.

I usually assume and accept that I'll be the only vote for a bunch of things.

This album is an all-time fave for me!

YouGov to see it (wins), Sunday, 15 September 2019 16:39 (four years ago) link

eh, releases that came out in 1999, esp late the year, are totally valid as 00s songs if that's when people were discovering them

i nominated filter's "take a picture", a 1999 release that broke at rock radio in november of that year. but i didn't hear it until it started picking up steam at top 40 stations, which was like 3-4 months later. i wouldn't fault anyone for considering it either a 90s tune or a 00s one. people are inevitably going to think to some extent about whether a song is actually 'from' the 2000s when they consider whether they should vote for it

dyl, Sunday, 15 September 2019 17:42 (four years ago) link

so i don't think it would be some big injustice if a track that technically came out in 1999 slipped into the results

dyl, Sunday, 15 September 2019 17:45 (four years ago) link

There’s gotta be a cutoff, may as well make it strictly by release date.

#YABASIC (morrisp), Sunday, 15 September 2019 19:09 (four years ago) link

decade of impact rule

Mordy, Sunday, 15 September 2019 20:17 (four years ago) link

Half the releases in this thread had almost no “impact” at all

#YABASIC (morrisp), Sunday, 15 September 2019 20:23 (four years ago) link

Even judging by year of impact, "My Life Muzik" was an underground hit in 1999 and appeared on several different multi-artist compilations that year, so no way does it count as a 2000 track.

Tuomas, Sunday, 15 September 2019 20:26 (four years ago) link

(It’s not my poll, of course — just seems weird to say that a chart-performing release gets to slide into consideration for the following year, if that’s when it has the fortune to “pick up steam” culturally.)

#YABASIC (morrisp), Sunday, 15 September 2019 20:29 (four years ago) link

Dooms Night (Timo Maas Remix) was released in Germany in 1999, but was only a hit in the UK in 2000, honestly not sure on that one.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 15 September 2019 20:31 (four years ago) link

The same with Darude's "Sandstorm" (which I don't think was nominated?): it was released here in Finland in late 1999 and was played a lot in clubs already that year, but it didn't become a global hit until 2000.

Tuomas, Sunday, 15 September 2019 20:33 (four years ago) link

I'm wondering where the "decade of impact" rule will put my nominations of Lady Gaga/Beyonce's "Telephone" (released on an EP at the end of 2009, but not released as a single until early 2010) and Young Money's "Roger That" (included on a 2009 compilation before being released as a single in 2010). I'm still going to vote for them, but I totally get why they might be thought of as belonging more to the current decade than the previous one.

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Sunday, 15 September 2019 21:44 (four years ago) link

i believe "decade/year of impact" pretty much means "if there's an edge case like that, it's eligible" so i don't think there's a problem with either of them

ufo, Sunday, 15 September 2019 21:49 (four years ago) link

i feel like not having hard cut-off will generate more work on what’s already going to be an epic poll.
