Shocked there isn't a thread yet

Dude has had a wild couple years

Not a fan/haven't really listened except thru osmosis, he's from around here (or lived here briefly)

College/frat kids love him. Fantano, too

What's the deal???

flappy bird, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 17:25 (four years ago) link

ar built like lena dunham

last years veteran was pretty strong, can't speak to the earlier stuff; as with many things the heavy fantano endorsement made me suspicious

"I Cannot Fucking Wait Until Morrissey Dies" is such a great song title

flappy bird, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 18:40 (four years ago) link

he rules. was booked on a show with him at the bell foundry and it was p sparsely attended and he just left without playing lol

“Ash my blunt” is a crucial pre-veteran track. saw him at rough trade last year, sold it out, crazy energy

veteran was fine, but the 2019 singles have been pretty fantastic.

two weeks pass...

album rules, maybe overlong, maybe ... overmuch but so much to get lost in and so visceral at the same time. the hardest 'headphones album'?

Weirdly, he released this to Bandcamp
on Friday as a "pay what you want" download, then pulled it from his page today

It's streaming on Spotify.

It's solid and I think I like it more than Veteran which is high praise from me. The production is ridiculous.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Wednesday, 18 September 2019 14:53 (four years ago) link

it was fine, nothing to really excite me but well put together idk

imago, Wednesday, 18 September 2019 15:19 (four years ago) link

I liked Veteran better. More rapping, less singing iirc.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 18 September 2019 15:21 (four years ago) link

cool back to the regularly scheduled bob Dylan, Taylor Swift, and Wilco discussion then!

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Thursday, 19 September 2019 19:50 (four years ago) link

i'll give it another listen. there's a lot of exciting alt-rap coming out right now and this excites me much less than, say, clipping, but as runaway leader of the rym chart it does demand further inspection

imago, Thursday, 19 September 2019 19:53 (four years ago) link

cool back to the regularly scheduled bob Dylan, Taylor Swift, and Wilco discussion then!

Now, now, I haven't participated in any of those and don't plan on it any time soon.

And speaking of RYM and alt-rap, the Billy Woods & Kenny Segal is much more to my liking.

sorry for the petulance! came back after a few days to find nobody caring about what i felt to be at least a very strong effort at making something new/interesting and just a bunch of threads on the must lethally boring shit ...

but ... upon further listens i am having a hard time avoiding the conclusion that this album is not good ... idk the raps are corny. would love to hear an instrumental effort or double down on the punk-rap vox of veteran. lots of cool moments though

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Saturday, 21 September 2019 17:10 (four years ago) link

really enjoyed the first listen. second ok too but " lots of cool moments though" seems about right to me

I will never make Veteran 2. if your ever expecting that please leave now and keep playing harsh noise music on a loop I have nothing else to offer u

Gonna start saying cracker way more in songs now since CRACKERS think it’s edgy. Black people talking about black issues on wax in 2019 is edgy to CRACKERS. I’ll be on tour next month u know exactly where to find me CRACKERS.

I’m gonna make every last one of u fake ass closet racist hip hop fans expose yourself one by one. I’m uprooting u HOES. Until u go back to bumping bumpin whatevr Fantano tells u to

the trippie redd + skinny puppy moments do point towards a world-conqueringly awesome sound, a total synthesis of rock, pop, and experimental musics of the past generation ... or something

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Monday, 23 September 2019 14:51 (four years ago) link

If I weren't already a fan this probably wouldn't be the record to convert me -- it feels like a victory lap, coasting on good will, with plenty of personality/charisma but not much focus (esp. the interminable 'skits' where he's hanging out with whoever that woman is and cracking jokes about smoking weed) -- I did get a solid chuckle from "Hope you had the time of your life, cuz it's over for you when I come around"

I don't think this record is the best starting place but it's my favorite yet. So many interesting moments and twists every step of the way.Goes beyond everything he was doing on Veteran

gman59, Thursday, 26 September 2019 20:56 (four years ago) link

yeah it’s less “it’s bad” and more “it’s nowhere as good as I hoped”. but first two tracks are pretty massive

three weeks pass...

Anyone know why this dude is wiling out on twitter these days? I’m trying to pick up the thread but can’t really follow

flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Friday, 18 October 2019 13:27 (four years ago) link

all my heroes are embarrassing on twitter

devvvine, Friday, 18 October 2019 13:52 (four years ago) link

something about how music critics only make $30k a year and are bad because if you can't do, teach, and if you can't teach, etc.

right, i got that, but what triggered it? a positive but not overwhelmingly so p4k review?

one year passes...

New album seems p great on first couple listens.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CGFU1lBdCI

New album is indeed expectedly great, "offline" version available to download on the bandcamp for free, "online" version drops a few tracks and adds CUTIE PIE! and BALD!, which youse all already heard anyway, so haed to bandcamp. Or BANDCAMP! it should prolly be

The Speak Of The Mearns (Jonathan Hellion Mumble), Sunday, 24 October 2021 19:24 (two years ago) link

I hate that the Hazard Duty Pay! sample didn't get cleared and is not on the final 'online' album. It's probably the best song here.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 30 October 2021 04:28 (two years ago) link

Yeah, it's one of my favorites. But you can get it if you get the Bandcamp version.
