by contrast, this one is v easy

brigadier pudding (DJP), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 15:01 (seven months ago) link

this is as easy as the sister poll. rip, david.

je est un autre, l'enfer c'est les autres (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 15:06 (seven months ago) link

Squarepusher had my vote... until I made it down the list to Tortoise.
(never listened to American Water, but I'm guessing that one's gonna be close to the top)

enochroot, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 15:08 (seven months ago) link

xp yeah hard to get past that record right now, isn't. IMO it's his/their best one too.

Captain ACAB (Neil S), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 15:10 (seven months ago) link

Always been my fave of the 1st 3

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 15:31 (seven months ago) link

Aren’t you about done clogging up the board with your vanity project?

Mazzy Tsar (PBKR), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 15:36 (seven months ago) link

anyway Queens Of The Stone Age gets my vote as its their best album.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 15:36 (seven months ago) link

This one's harder because no GORGUTS.

Either Autechre or Massive Attack. 1998 me would have picked the latter in a heartbeat.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 16:03 (seven months ago) link

Either/Or was 1997.

Also - no Pernice Bros’ Overcome by Happiness? That’s my write-im vote.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 16:19 (seven months ago) link

Fugazi - End Hits

Excuse me, OUR vanity project

The World According To.... (Michael B), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 16:34 (seven months ago) link

good list, best year of the 90s imo

jakey mo collier (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 16:35 (seven months ago) link

hard not to vote for american water tho, for obvious, sad reasons

jakey mo collier (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 16:36 (seven months ago) link

Mezzanine

that's not my post, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 16:53 (seven months ago) link

gotta go with autechre here. I only heard it the first time a couple of years later, but it is the album that started my so far unabated fandom/obsession with their music

silverfish, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 16:59 (seven months ago) link

Nice to see Circle make an appearance (first one of the 90s?). Good album but a long way from my favourite of theirs.

Thank You (Fattekin Mice Elf Control Again) (Noel Emits), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 17:17 (seven months ago) link

best autechre vs. best silver jews :/

It's the best album on the list.

kraudive, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 20:06 (seven months ago) link

In/Casino/Out, the best punk record ever made

flappy bird, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 20:08 (seven months ago) link

oh god i missed LP5 by Autechre. That's literally one of my top 5 all time albums...

frame casual (dog latin), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 21:15 (seven months ago) link

It's the best album on the list.

― kraudive, Wednesday, August 21, 2019 3:06 PM (one hour ago) bookmarkflaglink

well, that too

jakey mo collier (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 21:34 (seven months ago) link

Mike, ILM prefers your populist polls. You win!

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 21:49 (seven months ago) link

Of these, Terraform. HE BUILD A MONUMENT TO HIMSELF

imago, Wednesday, 21 August 2019 22:05 (seven months ago) link

ah I did get to vote for LP5, it was the other poll i voted in

frame casual (dog latin), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 22:08 (seven months ago) link

Mike, ILM prefers your populist polls. You win!

I didn't know it was a contest

The World According To.... (Michael B), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:11 (seven months ago) link

Neither did i but your polls have captured the heart of ILM

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 21 August 2019 23:39 (seven months ago) link

Voted for Merzbow's 1930 just over Autechre. I agree with whoever said they like these lists a lot more than the 1997 ones.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Thursday, 22 August 2019 01:33 (seven months ago) link

This strikes me as one of the weaker years in the 90s.

TNT is the only one I'm particularly excited about.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 22 August 2019 03:52 (seven months ago) link

I think at this point I was fully immersed in DnB and techno, and the bulk of non-rave indie stuff just passed me by.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 22 August 2019 03:54 (seven months ago) link

I don't think this is a weak year

I love TNT as much as Millions Now Living Will Never Die. the album cover is awful though

Dan S, Thursday, 22 August 2019 04:32 (seven months ago) link

don cab

Seany's too Dyche to mention (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 22 August 2019 17:46 (seven months ago) link

haha I always loved that cover!

“Hakuna Matata,” a nihilist philosophy (One Eye Open), Thursday, 22 August 2019 18:03 (seven months ago) link

I'd love to know how each album sold just to see if there's a drop off on which we can blame the cover!

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Thursday, 22 August 2019 18:11 (seven months ago) link

it's a funny cover but it doesn't relate to the music one bit, not even ironically

frame casual (dog latin), Thursday, 22 August 2019 19:23 (seven months ago) link

I dont remember it getting as good reviews in the UK as Millions did. Or maybe that was only nme. Can anyone remember?

Also why did Don Cab get hardly any UK coverage?

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Thursday, 22 August 2019 20:12 (seven months ago) link

Some great albums on this list, but Mezzanine is always gonna be an all-timer for me.

ilxor, Friday, 23 August 2019 06:51 (seven months ago) link

Maybe someone explained this already but what's the difference between Part 1 and Part 2 on these? Is there a theme I'm missing (other than that for '97 most of the good records were on the list with 'Homogenic' in it)?

Soundslike, Friday, 23 August 2019 08:34 (seven months ago) link

Kerr likes to put more canonical stuff on one list and more obscure stuff on the other list

The World According To.... (Michael B), Friday, 23 August 2019 09:11 (seven months ago) link

never realised what a year this was. I think I'm going don caballero again

― Soundslike, Friday, 23 August 2019 09:34 (five hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

After the early polls there was complaints we left out 'canonical' albums so we have 1 list with most of the canon and another with our actual pet faves which the polls were supposed to be about rather than canon.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Friday, 23 August 2019 14:26 (seven months ago) link

and as mike only wants to do one poll for 1999 some of your faves may be missing

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Friday, 23 August 2019 14:44 (seven months ago) link

1 poll ok with everyone?

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Saturday, 24 August 2019 00:14 (seven months ago) link

As long as “69 Love Songs” is on it!

Either Autechre or Massive Attack. 1998 me would have picked the latter in a heartbeat.

Literally my choice too. Btw, Music Has the Right to Children is sorely missing from these lists.

octobeard, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 05:01 (seven months ago) link

my bad, it's in the first one!

octobeard, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 05:03 (seven months ago) link

went with calexico, it's not the best album on the list but they deserve a vote dammit

jakey mo collier (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 14:31 (seven months ago) link

that Calexico one is a fantastic record

Captain ACAB (Neil S), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 14:33 (seven months ago) link

You've got yer LP5s and yer MHTRTCs but of course Soup is the connoisseur's choice of 1998 IDM / ambient techno classic.

Thank You (Fattekin Mice Elf Control Again) (Noel Emits), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 15:01 (seven months ago) link

False. I can't remember a single thing about it.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 16:00 (seven months ago) link

I played the hell out of that Mark Lanegan record at the time & havent really thought of it since then, curious to dig it out this week & see if it holds up

“Hakuna Matata,” a nihilist philosophy (One Eye Open), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 16:10 (seven months ago) link

I've heard virtually none of these, way off the alt rock train by '98, but Mezzanine.

confusementalism (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 18:00 (seven months ago) link

mezzanine is quite a good choice here and will probably win, i suppose.

je est un autre, l'enfer c'est les autres (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 18:02 (seven months ago) link

nah, Silver Jews will win

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 18:07 (seven months ago) link

i voted for american water so if it doesn't win it will not be my fault.

Couple of shroomy jam bands look sort out of place on this list.

octobeard, Thursday, 29 August 2019 02:54 (seven months ago) link

yes agree

Dan S, Thursday, 29 August 2019 02:57 (seven months ago) link

Even with the many time-honoured classics on this list, my 1998 #1 is still The High Llamas’ Cold and Bouncy (Dots and Loops’ sister album).
