he's real a one-off & has had quite a career playing all manner of percussion, some of it he's made himself, getting a break playing with john zorn and then going on to play with a huge variety of ppl and worked his way into the mainstream. thread prompted by his work on the excellent new oren ambarchi record simian angel. pls help me navigate his enormous catalogue.

don't know much about him at all, but as a random tzadiker/zornite I'm familiar with his Bluefly album from '16 which is very nice.

sounds like a good starting point. He plays also on almost all of Zorn's Filmworks cd's on Tzadik. A great series.

someone wrote a bit on it here, the list of musicians involved is extensive to say the least.

Brian Marsella on fender rhodes, that's what you call a band!

he's played so many of my tzadik faves including The Gift and the 90's film music classics as mentioned. He did a duo album with Derek Bailey, quite a staggering list of ppl he's worked on his wiki.

would strongly recommend The Gift which is one of the strongest of Zorn's exotica albums imo and his percussion is a big part of why it is so great.

he did two albs w/bailey, one's called "cyro" and the other's called "derek" lol (which i'm listening to now since this topic came up)

also laughing at my own clownshoe expertise on calling the greatest of zorn's exotica albums, he's only made about 90 of them!

first thing I heard him on was zorn's IAO which is all smokey occult midnight sounds and he really stood out. some great stuff on his record from 98. I've never managed to get into bailey, might give those a try

for me this is the peak of Zorn's Dreamers Band, even though the band wasn't named that for another 6 years.

was informed by a phish-head yesterday that cyro also plays in trey anastasio's band.

tylerw, Tuesday, 13 August 2019 15:34 (four years ago) link

and has apparently played with Jay z!!

I don't like Phish, but I did see the Trey Anastasio band once and they were all awesome (except Trey, who sucks).

Caym: The Book Of Angels Vol. 17 is another good one with Cyro as bandleader. Kaleidoscopic exotica with strong middle eastern influences you might expect from this series and it goes all over the shop but is anchored with some a+ oud bass playing.

B Marsella on the pump organ is a delight.
