Because everyone is talking about 1999 this week for some reason, and because it was fun to spend an evening making a playlist instead of getting on with work, here is a self-indulgent poll. Your favourite songs may or may not be here.

I made a youtube playlist, can I post it here without it trying and failing to embed? Let's have a try - click here for the youtube playlist [img]

voted fyuz - it's the only one actually in my library

i can't really recommend tracks - most of the "1999" tracks in my library are mistagged cd reissues - some stabs:

calyx - schitzoid
houndog - i brought the rain
manishevitz - lonesome cowboy dave thomas
mr. bungle - goodbye sober day
olivia tremor control - i have been floated
ultrasound - stay young

yeah i don't know that's what i've got, i don't have a lot of interesting music from '99

But would've gone "Rendez-Vu" for the Jaxx pick.

who took the bomp?

Bomfunk MC's - Freestyler

I might not vote for it, but my heart leapt when I saw this one.

shudder/king of snake

xp I was talking to a Finnish girl about music one time and she outnof nowhere apologised for the Bomfunk MCs, she was fairly surprised when I said I loved their one hit, closest thing we had to a D&B number one until 2011!

Vivrant Thing just over Second Line and Coffee & TV

Afx, Björk or Blur. Likely Afx.

pomenitul, Sunday, 4 August 2019 09:40 (six months ago) link

Doom’s Night obviously, but it’s not really ideal for home listening.

Siegbran, Sunday, 4 August 2019 09:59 (six months ago) link

In retrospect Freestyler was one of the songs that kicked off the big electro revival in the years after this, together with Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass

Siegbran, Sunday, 4 August 2019 10:02 (six months ago) link

come on Freestyler was terrible and the tail end of big beat

or something, Sunday, 4 August 2019 11:35 (six months ago) link

I don’t really have an opinion on its place in musical history, but I hated big beat and I loved “Freestyler” (and still do)

breastcrawl, Sunday, 4 August 2019 11:45 (six months ago) link

I find it pretty difficult to lump Freestyler in with big beat, it has way more in conmon with all the big electro tunes that came after, Moguai, Tomcraft, Moonbootica, Huntemann etc.

Siegbran, Sunday, 4 August 2019 16:17 (six months ago) link

Been listening to those four and was reminded of a novelty electro record a friend had on promo cd in 2001, was a 4-track promo with different mixes, very little if any vocals... it was sort of a "fun track" but had a unique sound... sorry, not able to remember or describe very well, but would really like to find it.

Surely Sweet Like Chocolate for this one? Sugary UK Garage perfection

There are at least 10 things here that make me feel deep joy but I'm going to ask nitpicking questions anyway... is that Quickspace Happy Song #1 or #2?

a passing spacecadet, Monday, 5 August 2019 21:17 (six months ago) link

I think #1 was released on 7" without the #1 on the end of the title, but a '99 release date probably points at #2.

Eh, anyway, that or Second Line or Sweet Like Chocolate or Deceptacon or Flat Beat/Dooms Night (these two wub-wub-wub tracks have been melded into one in my head ever since 1999, but it's a good one) or Windowlicker or King of Snake or...

a passing spacecadet, Monday, 5 August 2019 21:21 (six months ago) link

voted for Mos to make sure he got a vote

jakey mo collier (voodoo chili), Monday, 5 August 2019 21:23 (six months ago) link

xp from the Precious Little EP which apparently makes it #2, and, er, from 1998.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 5 August 2019 21:35 (six months ago) link

it has just occurred to me that I've never heard Quickspace Happy Song #1 (I've got the #2 7")
