LINGUA IGNOTA

Since the metal thread is too provincial to contain the sublimely wrathful visions of this neo-Hildegardian seer and singer of unknown tongues…

pomenitul, Monday, 22 July 2019 09:14 (eight months ago) link

in awe of this, anyone seen the live show?

ogmor, Monday, 22 July 2019 09:44 (eight months ago) link

is this something you might like if you have a deep disinclination towards metal? i'm always trying stuff but i can't deal with the horrible vocals.

calzino, Monday, 22 July 2019 09:46 (eight months ago) link

Most definitely, yes. Her singing is grounded in plainchant, even when it's torn asunder.

pomenitul, Monday, 22 July 2019 09:52 (eight months ago) link

I hate metal and love lingua ignota, but the vocals are well intense deep primal scream ish

ogmor, Monday, 22 July 2019 09:53 (eight months ago) link

I would've had to go to London which was simply not a possibility that evening so no, alas.

ogmor giving me visions of a boaby/ignota crossover

DO YOU DOUBT ME XTRMNTR?

pomenitul, Monday, 22 July 2019 10:11 (eight months ago) link

not heard her yet, but it sounds like she has more in common with Diamanda Galas than metal.

calzino, Monday, 22 July 2019 10:11 (eight months ago) link

or Boab.

calzino, Monday, 22 July 2019 10:11 (eight months ago) link

New record is excellent. In intent, she reminds me more of Runhild Gammelsaeter than Galas (not sure if that helps lol), but while she does do 'intense deep primal scream', I'd say there is definitely more chanting/singing than plain screaming. It's not at all about 'look at the crazy things I can make my vocal chords do' if that's what you are worried about Calz. (not saying that is what Galas does either btw)

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 22 July 2019 10:26 (eight months ago) link

Runhild Gammelsaeter

Sounds intriguing. Thanks!

pomenitul, Monday, 22 July 2019 10:34 (eight months ago) link

Oh if you haven't heard it you definitely should (you too, LJ!)!. 'Amplicon' veers into Khanate-like territory and assaults you. It starts out like an absolute nightmare but once it's over you'll feel cathartic.

It's here: https://runhildgammelsaeter.bandcamp.com/album/amplicon

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 22 July 2019 10:44 (eight months ago) link

She's completely brilliant. The new album hasn't quite hit me with the shock and revelation of All Bitches Die, but it's growing with each listen.

jmm, Monday, 22 July 2019 12:06 (eight months ago) link

This is definitely more RIYL Diamanda Galás, Jarboe, Runhild Gammelsæter or Nico than metal.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Monday, 22 July 2019 12:07 (eight months ago) link

yeah my first thought listening to Caligula was Marble Index era Nico, but obv her vocal range is much different to say the least. she's really great.

calzino, Monday, 22 July 2019 12:28 (eight months ago) link

I feel like this album is more hymnal in comparison to the storylike songs on ABD.

jmm, Monday, 22 July 2019 17:08 (eight months ago) link

"I am the Beast" is amazing.

jmm, Wednesday, 24 July 2019 04:00 (eight months ago) link

This is a spicy take but one I stand by:

Her intensity, nonconformity, and her talent with the piano makes me imagine what might have happened had Lady Gaga used her talents for the dark side rather than becoming a pop diva. I'm not talking about physical similarities that others have mentioned (not above; in other online reviews). I'd bet that if they ever got into a room together it would be an interesting chat with two people who share a lot more in common than it might appear with the naked eye.

Yep, I like this on first listen. It connects more immediately with me than All Bitches Die did.

Prettiest passage on the album:

I've seen the live show. Extremely intimate. She's a true talent. Saw her open for the Body a year or so ago. This new one is my favorite yet. One of the best albums I've heard in a long time.

0.1 short of a BNM tag on Pitchfork.

I’m looking forward to giving Caligula a proper listen. All Bitches Die was such a harrowing fusion of form and content, it will be interesting to see if she can repeat the hat trick

o. nate, Thursday, 25 July 2019 13:36 (eight months ago) link

I was just thinking she needs her own thread, as I don't go into the rolling metal thread all that much (but did pop in to see if there was any discussion specifically for this!) - glad to see someone else has had the same idea. All Bitches Die made my '17 year-end ballot, but I think after living with it for a couple of years it should've been my number one. I've been putting off Caligula because I want my first listen to be *just right* but maybe I should just fucking dive in.

I'm a bit confused by this - isn't a hat trick performing three feats in a row (e.g. goal-scoring)? What do you mean by this??

emil.y, Thursday, 25 July 2019 14:04 (eight months ago) link

Sorry, bad choice of metaphor. I just meant that her debut felt sui generis and it’s interesting to see where an artist goes next after something like that.

o. nate, Thursday, 25 July 2019 14:29 (eight months ago) link

Is it odd that my (positive) reaction to the first two songs on this is "it's metal PJ Harvey"?

brigadier pudding (DJP), Thursday, 25 July 2019 19:10 (eight months ago) link

Caligula just gets better and better. I haven't heard anything else yet this year with this kind of depth and beauty.

ogmor, Tuesday, 1 October 2019 22:17 (six months ago) link

Oh, I never came back to this thread after listening. The album is, of course, sublime catharsis. I wish I could've gone to the London show.

emil.y, Tuesday, 1 October 2019 22:18 (six months ago) link

One of the, if not the best, live vocal performances I’ve ever heard. The classical training really comes through live with the power and control. And in terms of stage presence and production she just had everybody enthralled-like putty. Also I don’t usually go nuts for lighting or production values at shows but wow.

Though with the way she took control of the stage I had a strange mental disconnect. I honestly thought she was about 7’ tall and I was looking at one of the largest people I have ever seen, and it’s only when she jumped off stage and walked into the crowd I realised she is like 5’ 7.

listening to Caligula now. WOW

It's incredible for such a simple setup. I'm dying to get to one of these shows.

Sent some money, about what she'd probably charge for a show. And yes US healthcare is a total fucking inhumane racket of a system.

StanM, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 19:44 (two weeks ago) link

this is great but from how it sounds I'm assuming it came out of the Caligula sessions and wasn't deemed a good fit for the album? if she's recording new stuff (that Imagine treatment aside lol) then that's good. i guess she's said she needs cash for medical reasons - would make sense to put out another album asap

I like how 3/4 through the song they remember Greg Fox is in the room so they unleash him and he just goes ham on the rest of the track.

I think so, I thought I heard he was going to be on the next album, so I'm not sure if this is an outtake from Caligula or if they already did some recording for #3.
