Nina Nastasia: We Never POLLed

I'm partial to Run to Ruin's neo-Gothic chamber music, in part because I heard it first. All of them are undeniable contenders, though.

Voted Outlaster but Dogs is a very close second for me. I've never been able to get into The Blackened Air and haven't heard the others.

Seeing those six albums in one decade and nothing from the last 10 years really hits home. What's she doing now?

scott seward (whom we all miss) wrote in February last year that

jim white just told me that nina recorded an album with albini and jeff parker. that fabled day has come!

Cruel words.

she's been designing/making/selling girls' clothes too, iirc

I really like You Follow Me but Dogs is 'the one'.

On Leaving is a sleeper

"Jim Haunts a Party" is perfect

Hard to choose just one, I went with "Run to Ruin" cuz it's probably my favorite? But I love all these records.

I imagine she'll eventually release another record, though I'm not holding my breath

"The Blackened Air" is so good

On Leaving is my favorite. The last few songs lag, but everything from the opening to Treehouse Song slays me like I'm hearing it the first time. So many fragmented images that evoke so much, I feel possessed by someone else's memories. She delivered a perfect decade of records, probably my favorite run of the 00s.

hardest poll ever, really truly. there are songs in every one of those albums that i'd never ever want to be without. what album hangs together best? dogs or on leaving... possibly. but run to ruin kicked me in the gut and outlaster has this familiar way and one way out.

Funky Isolations (jed_), Monday, 22 July 2019 00:40 (four years ago) link

blackened air was the first one I heard and the one I'm still most familiar with so that.

one way out may be the most depressing song ever written and if you see it written down it barely makes any sense because it leaves everything, including grammar, out but leaving the grammar out drives the song right in to your soul.

I mean. "if we can tend the fire could burn forever/ can't we?" it's just astonishing what she does.

she's the person i've seen live more than anyone else.

a friend of mine, who works in film, was listening, for the first time, to one of her records i was playing and said sth like "she has the perfect hollywood accent" and i was like wtf? but i looked up her wiki and she is from hollywood!

sorry to post so continuously, but i tend to know people in venues that host gigs in town and, as a result, i've spoken to her a few times and, i can say that the "never meet your heroes" trope does not apply to NN because she's a delightful person who doesn't care who you are other than that she cares enough to talk to you.

that's good to hear

was googling and found this! a new song with Daniel Knox who I'm not familiar with, unsurprisingly it's amazing

Dogs or Outlaster but still unsure which

You Follow Me is one of my favorite albums, period, so I voted for that. It's such a perfect collaboration between the two of them.

Of the rest, I like them all. On Leaving was my introduction and maybe the one I've gone back to the most. I prefer her stripped-down rather than all orchestrated like on Outlaster, although to be clear in my view there are no bad Nina Nastasia albums.

More!

the various peel sessions > everything else

the one mp3 blog that was hosting these got asked to remove them because an official release was coming. it never did.
