Do you like them?

Smoke Mushroom, Monday, 18 November 2002 23:42 (nineteen years ago) link

yes, tho i disapprove of re-releasing 'Poor Leno' - i'm not really keen on the vocal or the pan-clanging...and the video is stupid, unlike the superb 'Remind Me' and 'Eple' videos...their performance at the MTV awards was a bit worrying as well (bobbing your head frantically over a huge synth whilst wearing what appears to be some kind of novelty cape isnt as appealing as it sounds)

people below me will now slag them off for being too 'polished' or 'dull' i expect, ah well...their remixes (streets, felix, spiller) are also great

stevem (blueski), Monday, 18 November 2002 23:55 (nineteen years ago) link

when they get a bit dirtier sounding they're much better. see:
*royksopp's night out
*the remixes stevem mentioned as well as of annie's 'greatest hit' and mekon's 'please stay'. well, the mekon track isn't exactly 'dirty' but it's good anyway, it has a bit more momentum than eg 'poor leno' or 'sparks' which don't do much for me at all. the vocalists are very bland.
'eple' is also good.

minna (minna), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 00:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I really like the piano in "Poor Leno" - makes it sound a bit wistful and sad, maybe. And that "Weak Become Heroes" remix is easily going on my best singles of the year list. "Eple" stands as my third-favorite thing of theirs, and the rest of it I like well enough, mostly.

On mine too, no doubt about that. And to think this wasn't even considered good enough to be the B side of the WBH single...

Are the Poor Leno mixes any good?

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 00:34 (nineteen years ago) link

it doesnt seem THAT different from the Ashley Beedle mix tho does it? i need to listen to it again - it hasnt done much for me other than just 'mmm nice'

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 01:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Ok I'm listening to Melody AM and I think it's the most dull when it treads into similar arenas that Morr Music and the BoC axis are already handling with a better grasp of detail, effect and subtlety. Also, the vocal tracks are mostly undistinguished and some of the good instrumental tracks feel incomplete as if they need vocalists. So I am ambivalent. "In Space" sounds like an ideal Ashanti instrumental. "Poor Leno" reminds me of Dirty Vegas, blah. "Eple" is good but a bit too twinkly. I should go hear that Streets remix now huh.

My friend asked me about the album today, this must be the 8th thread about these guys on ILM too. Anyway I think the remixes are some of the best remixes I've heard since I started listening to lots of dance music. The Mekon one and the Felix one in particular, not heard the Streets one yet unfortunately. I'd also pretty much agree that Royksopp's Night Out is the best track on the album. I do like the feel of Poor Leno as a house track, I mean as early evening house it is quite a charming little record I think, certainly distinctive if a little bland. Remind Me ain't too bad either.

The live show blows away the album though.

everyone does it seems...i'm surprised it won an MTV European gong last year - videos without the artists appearing in them at all rarely get that kind of commemoration (although it also happened with The Avalanches' 'Since I Left You' the year before)

it was co-directed by the brother of Etienne de Crecy too, video pop-pickers

piscesboy, Monday, 27 January 2003 19:50 (eighteen years ago) link

minna's definitely right about their big strength: when they set the tempo to 130 bpm and start throwing in disco beats they're unstoppable. When they're going for the Moby demographic with downtempo chill-out triphop it's time to look for a bucket.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 12:48 (eighteen years ago) link

but they are actually pretty good at that downtempo chill-out style - maybe a bit lightweight in the same way Moby's stuff is, but that needn't be a bad thing - they're obviously keen to maintain a pop sensibility rather than match a deeper ambient sound ala Global Comm, Boards Of Canada etc.

realized today that their beck remix ("still missing/heaven's hammer") is not only a good record, but one of my favourite ever. epic melancholy supported by chubby bass groove, stuffed with whizz-bang sfx that actually contribute rhythmically. best thing they've ever done, i think. dunno why it was left off guerolito, it destroys air's 80-fication of the song.

The Boys Noize mix of "Happy Up Here" is awesome.

van smack, Sunday, 15 February 2009 21:57 (twelve years ago) link

While "Happy Up Here" is a pleasant enough "Eple" rehash, the rest of the album is very good, specifically the bouncy "Miss it So Much", the Kate Bush-y "You Don't Have a Clue" and the stupendously dramatic "The Girl and the Robot" with Robyn. My only problem is with the very irritating "Tricky Tricky" which will probably be a big hit to spite me.

Royksopp do reinforce my theory that Robyn, Lykke Li, Karin Dreijer and Kate Havnevik are all the same person though.

so I'm listening to Parliament and it gets to 'do that stuff' and all of a sudden I get a total pang of nostalgia for Nice & Smooth ( -- still awesome, "I can get mellow / Lay back, and let my girl play the cello / Hello / I hate Jell-O") and then I get to this new Royksopp video

ok I am just a sucker for this. I love how they pitch-shift modulated a parliament sample essentially into a cover of the one other song I know by them, they're using a sample to cover... themselves!

Is this all ILM has on Junior? I've never really listened to this band before (apart from hearing the singles off Melody AM) but I'm really enjoying this album. The Girl And The Robot, True To Life, You Don't Have A Clue - all totally killer. I don't see how the vocalists are a miss-step.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:33 (eleven years ago) link

djh, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:42 (eleven years ago) link

bld feel free to make yr case for it being better than Junior. i've kinda ignored this because tho it is by no means terrible it is kinda dull and neither as lush nor as busy as i was hoping they could make it.

modrić in paradise (blueski), Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:51 (eleven years ago) link

Curious way to go about asking if you should check it out but ok. I think it's worth hearing. It's got some good tracks, a few tracks that are just ok and no real stinkers. Nothing incredible either.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:51 (eleven years ago) link

My case for it being better than Junior = fewer vocals on Senior. Senior is more of a listening album, Junior is more of a 'let's make party tracks with guest vocalists'.
