Amazing list. But Back in Black will always have my heart, 'cos that's what I was listening to at the time.

People always say "oh no, tough choice." I get it now. This might be my own personal peak year for favorite albums.
I refuse to vote.

nice selection, i'm gonna sit on this for a while before choosing, great to see abba showing up. the rsm isn't one of the ones i've heard

like i said previously, i don't really click with the '80s like i do the '70s - here's the the non-listed records that strike my fancy from 1980

a. kalma - interfrequence
aksak maboul - un peu de l'ame des bandits

v/a - miniatures
the brothers johnson - light up the night

Stevie Wonder - Hotter Than July

Guys, I know I always vote for Stevie but ... this album is so damned good!

zama roma ding dong (Eric H.), Friday, 12 April 2019 02:38 (one week ago) Permalink

My gut says Killing Joke. But I'll have to think on it.

buttigieg play the blues (crüt), Friday, 12 April 2019 02:42 (one week ago) Permalink

xp don't know how anything can top Talking Book, Innervisions, Songs in the Key of Life, this doesn't feel like Stevie Wonder's year to me

Dan S, Friday, 12 April 2019 02:58 (one week ago) Permalink

Pretenders over a half-dozen contenders but would have voted Squeeze, Argybargy, had it been an option.

I don't know the Stevie album and will have to remedy.

Other standouts for me this year:

Moebius and Plank, Rastakraut Pasta
Akiko Yano, Gohan ga dekita yo
Jim Carroll Band, Catholic Boy

If it were songs, Summertime in England by some distance, but Remain in Light or Gaucho for me.

Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Friday, 12 April 2019 09:30 (one week ago) Permalink

Jon Hassell & Brian Eno - Fourth World, Vol. 1: Possible Musics.

pomenitul, Friday, 12 April 2019 09:34 (one week ago) Permalink

Travelogue may be the one that's genuinely meant the most, although Kings Of The Wild Frontier was everything in actual 1980.

Apart from N'Draman Blintch whom we were all jamming in 1980 of course.

Armand Frippanino (Noel Emits), Friday, 12 April 2019 09:56 (one week ago) Permalink

My #1 is missing (Cultosaurus Erectus) but this is still a killer list. Voting for Dead Kennedys over Pop Group, mainly on account of how great East Bay Ray sounds through out, and how it culminates in him going after Richard Lloyd's lunch money in Holiday in Cambodia

Gaucho, just over Remain in Light - this was a really great year though.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 12 April 2019 11:14 (one week ago) Permalink

fuck, this is hard.

metamatic vs. dirty mind vs. gaucho vs. get happy

J. Sam, Friday, 12 April 2019 11:51 (one week ago) Permalink

I would have considered voting for Telekon or Vienna or Empires and Dance but unfortunately none of them are there. Fortunately Gentlemen Take Polaroids is there, so naturally I'm voting for that. Brilliant record.

This being ILM, though, I can already predict that the Top 3 will be "1,000 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" stalwarts such as Closer (which is a classic, but a very boring choice) and the overrated Remain in Light, as well as the patchy Gaucho.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 12 April 2019 13:02 (one week ago) Permalink

I don't really care for any of these albums tbh.

pomenitul, Friday, 12 April 2019 13:04 (one week ago) Permalink

Also missing that I really like:

Fad Gadget - Fireside Favourites
Kate Bush - Never For Ever
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - Organisation
Paul McCartney - McCartney II
Rush - Permanent Waves
Squeeze - Argybargy
The Buggles - The Age of Plastic
Skids - The Absolute Game
Visage - Visage
XTC - Black Sea
John Lennon/Yoko Ono - Double Fantasy
U2 - Boy
Split Enz - True Colours
The Jacksons - Triumph
Genesis - Duke
Yes - Drama
The Damned - The Black Album
Diana Ross - Diana

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 12 April 2019 13:12 (one week ago) Permalink

Lots of favourites on this list but this is definitely The Feelies for me

jmm, Friday, 12 April 2019 14:08 (one week ago) Permalink

I own half of these! Voting for Comsat Angels. But there's still lots on my missing list:

Buggles - The Age Of Plastic
The Damned - The Black Album
The Durutti Column - The Return Of...
Fad Gadget - Fireside Favourites
Fire Engines - Lubricate Your Living Room
Vic Godard & Subway Sect - What's The Matter Boy?
Jon Hassell & Brian Eno - Possible Musics
Mo-dettes - The Story So Far
The Monochrome Set - Strange Boutique / Love Zombies
Mr. Partridge - Take Away - The Lure Of Salvage
Pauline Murray and The Invisible Girls - s/t
Colin Newman - A-Z
Pere Ubu - The Art Of Walking
The Psychedelic Furs - s/t
Roedelius - Selbstportrait II
The Saints - The Monkey Puzzle
Simple Minds - Empire and Dance
Skids - The Absolute Game
The Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight (this would've been my top pick)
The Sound - Jeopardy
Stiff Little Fingers - Nobody's Heroes
Pete Townshend - Empty Glass
Toy Love - s/t
The Undertones - Hypnotised
V/A - The Blues Brothers soundtrack
V/A - From Brussels With Love
X - Los Angeles
X (Au) - X-Aspirations
XTC - Black Sea

Do you like 70s hard rock with a guitar hero? (Tom D.), Friday, 12 April 2019 14:41 (one week ago) Permalink

In the absence of Hassell/Eno, I'll probably end up going with Joy Division again. I like Peter Gabriel's III, but it feels less consistent to me than Closer.

pomenitul, Friday, 12 April 2019 14:57 (one week ago) Permalink

for me this is Remain in Light vs. Freedom of Choice vs. Crazy Rhythms

this is actually the toughest choice so far, I'm kinda weighing Side 1 of Remain in Light vs. Side 2 of Crazy Rhythms and the all-around catchiness of Freedom of Choice, I just find it hard to go against Remain in Light here

other albums I could've voted for: Black Sea by XTC (surprised not to see this one) and Neurovision by Telex (really great if you're into the Kraftwerk/YMO thing, plus it's got that ultra-dry Belgian-style humor to it). I also really like Welcome Plastics, Murdered by the Music by Yukihiro Takahashi, and that first Kurtis Blow album, plus isn't B-2 Unit from 1980? Damn this year was stacked!!!!

My vote goes to Colossal Youth because it was a more influential record to me, even if in reality it had no precedent or spiritual followers. It feels like a record outside of time and place and it’s pretty much perfect in its own terms.
