ok, thanks for all of the nominations list-cleaning! i made all of the little adjustments everyone mentioned above. removing all the doubles opened up several more spots, so i was able to almost all of the last wave of nominations to bring the total to the very satisfying and relevant number of 2019 songs. these were the songs i added:

The Pipettes one is interesting - on Spotify it's 2:09, and it's the version on We Are the Pipettes. It's legitimately that long. But I looked it up on Youtube and elsewhere, and the album version is indeed shorter, at 1:53. So i'm guessing they put a slightly different/longer version on the U.S. version of the album? at any rate, i've added it to the nominations list, but not the spotify playlist.

re: the Pipettes, there are two versions of We Are the Pipettes, the (original) UK version and the US version, and they each have different arrangements.

And it's annoying that the obviously superior UK version isn't on US Spotify, but that would be the one we'd be voting on.

Which (UK) TV show was Alan Parson Project's 'Sirius' used in? It's been bugging me all evening. Maybe it was just continuity music during snooker coverage in the late 80s or something.

in an unranked ballot, every song receives 200 points, for a total of 10,000 points. wow, that's pleasing!

based off of fionnland's suggestion above, but with slightly altered numbers so that everything adds up to 10,000 at the end. voters can submit a ranked 1-20 ballot, then three tiers from 21-30, 31-40, and 41-50.

I have such a hard time micro-ranking things like this--I find general groupings much easier. Also, the 500-98 spread from #1 to #50 is too steep for me; I won't like my #1 that much more than my #50.

Can I use this instead?

#1-10 - 400 points each (= 4,000)
#11-25 - 200 points each (= 3,000)
#26-50 - 120 points each (= 3,000)

i guess i can amend the google form to add "the clemenza option", as you outlined. just curious, though - you spread from 500 to 98 points is too much for you (a little over 5x the points for #1 vs #50). but the spread from 400 points to 120 points (3.3x the points for #1 vs #50) is acceptable?

no really, i'm going to add a separate option that you can use (and others will be welcome to use it too), so if you want the spread a little closer just let me know! there's no real "easier" or "harder" here, they all involve adding a new section on a google form

I like how "Lightworks" appears here in three variations: the original, J-Dilla's appropriation and then MF DOOM rapping over the latter.

A couple of other things: entries for Mekons + The Mekons and Germs + The Germs (Perhaps not terribly important except that I panicked thinking "Lexicon Devil" and "Never Been in a Riot" had been eliminated.)

My estimate would be that I like my #1, I don't know, maybe twice as much as my #50? So if I changed the top 10 to 300 points, that'd be 3,000, and the bottom 25 to 150, that'd be 3,750, leaving 3,250 for the middle 15, which works out to...a decimal. So just leave it like it is--the numbers are easy to work with.

btw, for those who are up late on a Saturday night (or up super early on a Sunday morning): how long should the voting period be? 3 weeks sound about right (ballots due by the end of Sunday, March 31st)?

I know it's a ton of songs so we need a decent amount of time, but I don't want to do one of those interminable polls that go on and on (even this nominations process took forever, i thought)

1-10: 300 points (3,000)
11-25: 217 points (3,255)
26-49: 150 points (3,600)
50: 145 points (145)

it's a ridiculous compromise: you know you want to agree to this

or if not, i'll just go with your option you mentioned above. but it's really not a big deal (on my end) to do the one i just posted, and then the spread would be a lot closer. others might like that too, and also they might appreciate your option because it's entirely made up of tiers

clemenza let me know what you decide by tomorrow morning, if you can! if i don't hear back i'll just go with the first option you proposed. other than that, i have everything ready to go for the voting poll, and i will post it sometime between 10-11 am Central time tomorrow morning
