Thank you for this poll! Loved this band and this album, still think about them all the time. This is going to really tough, I can see at least four songs I'd vote for in a heartbeat.

Saw these guys back in 2002 with Ben Kweller, Seafood and Dashboard Confessional.

lmao wow that lineup

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 18:48 (five years ago) link

i saw them play this whole record (with scattered your majesty tracks) in 2017 and it was absolutely wonderful

(as a quick aside Brad, some of these synth flourishes are totally Rentals and I'm curious if you like that first Rentals record. I loved it in the day)

i do love the first rentals record! it never occurred to me to compare them but you're onto something

synth breakdown in "the d in detroit" and then right back into I KEPT YOUR PICTURE JUST BEHIND THE EYE >>>>>>>>

can't kid myself though, this is "emma discovery" for me

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 18:55 (five years ago) link

Yeah, I mean "D in Detroit" was my gut reaction, but the longer I looked at the tracklist the more memories came back and made me reconsider.

Saw these guys back in 2002 with Ben Kweller, Seafood and Dashboard Confessional.

Same and I forgot until just now that Ben Kweller played.

I also saw them in 2001 with Saves The Day, Dashboard Confessional and Hot Water Music.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 19:39 (five years ago) link

"All Things Ordinary" is one of the greatest songs of all time so I voted for it.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 19:40 (five years ago) link

The only reason I remembered Kweller was there was because I was kinda into him at the time and I knew there had to be another band beyond The Anniversary to get me to actually brave the Dashboard crowds at House of Blues.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 19:41 (five years ago) link

That was my first time hearing Ben Kweller and his album Sha Sha from that year still holds up.

I left during Dashboard and ran out of gas on the way home! Fun times.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 15 January 2019 19:46 (five years ago) link

Voted D In Detroit. Still lodged in my brain even though I haven't actually heard this album in years (might have to revisit).

one year passes...

i kept your picture just behind the eye
those weeks when our distance grew
drove north where i found you waiting in des moines
thank god i'm not losing you

and girl i hope you're not alone
and sleep through this weather
and girl i hope you're whole again
back home we'll sleep better

up there for sure

I’m a your majesty Stan myself

brimstead, Friday, 3 November 2023 18:01 (five months ago) link

That's good too and after it came out I was convinced it was the better of the two, but two decades later and I still return to the debut far more often.

But the second disc of their rarities comp has some other really terrific stuff in the Your Majesty vein.
