SENYAWA: Indonesian Ritual Drone Metal

This is a thread for discussion of the amazing Indonesian duo Senyawa, consisting of vocalist Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryadi, who builds amazing instruments that sound like what a cello might sound like if Sunn O))) designed it. Their music is like ritual doom, but it's much more than chanting and drones; Shabara's voice is incredible, almost Keiji Haino-esque at times and operatic at others, and the range of tones Suryadi generates is like nothing I've ever heard. They've got a new album, Sujud, coming out in November on Sublime Frequencies.

Here's a live video from last year:

That performance is sick. I can't believe how good Shabara is.

Do any of the previous albums emphasize softer singing? I love moments like at 12:30.

They must be getting zillions of listeners from the Red Dead Redemption soundtrack too. Good year for them.

My label, Burning Ambulance Music, is putting out Senyawa's new album Alkisah in February of next year. (Preorder link)

We're one of 30+ labels putting it out, each handling a separate territory as part of an anti-hierarchical release strategy - in the US, it's me, and an outfit in California that's doing an ultra-limited cassette edition (50-100 copies).

Here's the video for the first track, "Istana":

It's so good. I can't believe they let me be one of the labels participating in their experiment.
