Once again, know about half of these. "The Rockford Files" obv.

"Feelings" used to be such a punchline back in the early '90s.

Rockford Files is the only one I've knowingly heard. There's a chasm wider than the Atlantic when it comes to the charts in the UK and US in the mid-70s.

"Rings" and "Good Time Charlie" were, I believe, the last two Top 30 hits recorded at American Studios in Memphis. This is a solid volume in the series, I love SB&Q, Orleans, King Harvest, Mike Post. Freddy Fender's is such a singular, affecting performance. I've heard the song covered many many times and everyone tries to copy his phrasing. I'm going with that narrowly over Danny O'Keefe.

Dancing in the Moonlight is one of my all time faves. One of the best openings ever with the little music box keyboard riff punctuated by a snare hit, a rest, then "we get it on most every night." Gets me every time.

"Feelings" was No. 4 hit in the UK. I was getting the Nazareth version of "Love Hurts" confused with the version by Jim Capaldi, which was a UK Top 10 hit the same year.

Elvis's cover of "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues" placed surprisingly high in our recent Elvis poll. Maybe the biggest surprise in the whole thing for me.

"Feelings" used to be such a punchline back in the early '90s.

Wikipedia: "An episode of The Gong Show that aired in November 1976 featured seven contestants, each of whom sang "Feelings". At the end of the episode, after the winner had been announced, everyone on stage sang it an eighth time."

I used to think this was a song about nice werewolves.

Would've voted for Brownsville Station at 13, but it's nothing special today (kind of precursor to punk, I guess). Not a good list. "Love Hurts," barely.

"Painted Ladies" is kind of amazing, if only because America (the band) scored by imitating Neil Young, and here Thomas imitates America imitating Neil Young.

Never heard of Orleans but "Dance With Me" must be a Radio 2 staple or something - very familiar, and a lovely song.

Jeff W, Monday, 24 September 2018 19:36 (five years ago) link

Rockford Files theme is obv going to win but the version on Spotify is a re-record by Mr Post with his best mate Larry Carlton and a rubbish synth. Here are the original takes, nicely edited together. Guitarist is Dan Ferguson.

That album (cover) had no impact across the pond, except - according to Wiki - in the Netherlands. Read into that what you will.

Contender for worst song in the entire series so far. Lasted about two minutes into it and had to skip. What a horrible song.
