a great baas player

On reflection, both More Blues and Seamus are also pretty negligible. I don't think they knew how to stamp their personality on blues changes until Shine On parts III and VI.

The only bad song Pink Floyd released between 1967 and 1977 was Biding My Time on Relics. Money is borderline (both blues songs).

You are Geir Hongro and I claim my five pounds

Who thinks Pink Floyd's forte was playing the blues?

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 5 December 2020 15:29 (three years ago) link

No one, you're right there. Although describing a song performed in 7/4 as "blues" is pushing the term a bit too far.

Anyway, I don't think he would like Interstellar Overdrive, Quicksilver etc.

I think Pink Floyd are OK.

I do love "Money", though.

Based on that video of Nick Mason mock-playing the drums on 'Remember a Day', I should have guessed that he did not, in fact, play drums on 'Remember a Day'.

I like the Gilmour songs on The Wall, and a few Syd songs, and I find 70s Roger Waters oddly very attractive, but that's the limit of my defence for this truly abominable band

Man, this thraed has been on rocket fuel over the last few days.

Natalie Merchant sounds like a calligraphy teacher doing karaoke. That's not necessarily a criticism.

Also this

I didn't really "get" the hype about Motown until the Complete Motown Singles CD sets started being released. I convinced my mom to get them for my dad, and then would steal them for myself for a few months. Hearing the breadth of how much was being recorded and how the sound was developed allowed me to really understand why certain artists were more popular that others, even if those more popular artists were never my faves.

is OTM (at least prior to their more album-oriented '70s releases, which I've loved forever). I think a lot of the more popular singles have definitely suffered from overfamiliarity but also some of the more popular singles aren't actually all that great. But hearing a slew of Motown b-sides and underplayed singles definitely boosted my overall esteem for their output and helped me appreciate acts I'd long overlooked (I'm so sorry, Gladys).

I love Piper but I've never really been able to get into much more of Pink Floyd's stuff. Oh, I guess I really liked 'Learning to Fly' when it was released.

Ha I’m not sure what this means but it is also somehow exactly otm. (Her voice has long been an obstacle to my getting w/ this band.)

Fine here is a controversial opinion that is also on topic... I listened to "...Reason" and "The Division Bell" often in high school, and revisited last year to confirm the following: despite their poor reputation, they are easily as good as anything from Pink Floyd's "classic" period

I said elsewhere not long ago that Ratt's 2010 album Infestation was a "didn't know they had it in them" level comeback record ignored (of course) by 99% of critics.

The only 'positive' opinions that could live up to this thread's premise are things like 'Tom MacDonald is a superlative rapper and his lyrics are on point'.

I actually checked that out based recently, surprisingly good and vintage Ratt sounding!

Whitesnake's "Still of the Night" is a superior composition and performance to anything released by Led Zeppelin after 1975.
