it's the fourth or fifth time this month i'm going to call something "album of the year" but this is really the one for me (i think, lol). pale horses ended up being a super important record to me bc of the feeling of encroaching apocalypse in its music and lyrics and its overall distrust of language to make sense or properly represent anything horrible, and this is the sprawling, post-scorched earth follow-up i think, an ambitious, loud, gentle, dreamlike (not in the sense of it being dreamy but in the sense that the shifts between songs are like the abrupt shifts between different landscapes and different gravities in dreams) rock record in the mold of juno's a future lived in past tense. the guitars are so gorgeous, especially on "julia," which the other night while high i compared to taking a shower but instead of water it's guitars. the album is out october 5, and it is preceded by an (also untitled) ep that came out today, which consists of their most accessible and gorgeous songs yet, almost a complete negative of what the album is. i think this is the best band in the world

the same guy (vasily kafanov) does all their cover art. he's awesome

lmao i also totally didn't know he was responsible for the machina art

i love this band in particular for their lyrics, and aaron weiss seems to have outdone himself on "august 6th" on the ep:

[scenes from old air raid] on screens in blue dusk
Perfumed neighborhoods/graveyards the breath feels like
Flies in my lungs, voice like ambulance
Sirens whose light floods the ground
(“praying mantis spreads arms” said the lines of whose palm?)
Skyline shifting like clouds became “airplane descends”
[fade to scenes on the ground]
Human foreheads all smashed, foreign cars upside down
Insect mouths open wide
I stared down a huge insect
Bright red-glowing eyes
[does it feel wrong to say a thought “metastasized”?]
Legs on both highway sides

S a i d i n s e c t w a s m e c h a n i z e d ! ! ! ! ! !

v glad they're releasing a single-LP option, fuck an "audiophile" vinyl where I have to flip the sides every 8 minutes

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Saturday, 18 August 2018 16:11 (one month ago) Permalink

lmao the chorus of "dirty air" is "ce n’est pas une chanson sur une peinture d’une pipe"

this new @mewithoutYou album is probably going down as my favorite thing they’ve done. the new EP is incredible too (which is already available for streaming). amazing to be a band for as long as they have and keep evolving, without ever losing their identity. pic.twitter.com/36DWcRX7s7

The EP is excellent!

aw i'm so glad!! i sorta wish "cities of the plain" and "august 6th" were on the album, it's not like they don't fit

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 20 August 2018 11:43 (one month ago) Permalink

The EP is exciting!

tangenttangent, Monday, 20 August 2018 16:10 (one month ago) Permalink

Winter Solstice is beautiful and I adore the pre-release single for the new album. I'm hoping the album art reflects something entropic about the music too.

Those August 6th lyrics are mad and wonderful. Lyrics about insects are always a good sign

tangenttangent, Monday, 20 August 2018 16:27 (one month ago) Permalink

there's no rock lyricist operating on aaron weiss' level rn imo, even managed to make me cry with a 1984 reference ("'send a couple rats,' said julia / i'd have done the same thing to you / coffee and a milk, now julia / who do you think needs who more?")

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 20 August 2018 17:29 (one month ago) Permalink

it feels unusual to see that book employed as an analogy for interpersonal relationships instead of, y'know, totalitarianism

This is so good! Thanks Brad for starting the thread.

I'm enjoying this EP, thanks for the suggestion, I probably would have passed it up

god "julia" is the best song ever made

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 29 August 2018 16:06 (one month ago) Permalink

Have been listening to the ep and to Pale Horses quite a lot recently, but Julia is the song that keeps sticking in my head. Hope the rest of the album lives up to it.

lol i can only bump my own thread so much but i implore... anyone to check this out. it gets more impressive every time i listen to it

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 12:28 (two weeks ago) Permalink

I'm just now getting a chance to listen! It already rules.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 14:24 (two weeks ago) Permalink

I was skeptical but you were actually otm with the Juno reference, this is one of the only other bands to nail that kind of alternately sharp and smeared multi-guitar sound.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 14:26 (two weeks ago) Permalink

hell yeah i knew i was sorta right

come unfastening android limbs in the moonlight through translucent skin / now we’ve both been there and back again / to the state that i’m no longer in

Standing on the lake shore, Julia,
silent as a seashell Julia
magnet of the elk park Julia
laid down on the Temple floor
“Send a couple rats,” said Julia
I’d have done the same thing to you
Coffee and a milk, now Julia
who do you think needs who more?

Best song of the year, although I have no idea what any of it means.

Just a 7.5? Brad?

ArchCarrier, Monday, 15 October 2018 11:12 (two days ago) Permalink

a) that is a sparkling review of a sparkling album brad
b) the 7.5 a dissonant with a glowing review like this

my hands were tied

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 15 October 2018 11:43 (two days ago) Permalink

That's a shame. Guess they're not really 'on brand' though, are they? Maybe they should rap more

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 15 October 2018 12:01 (two days ago) Permalink

enjoyed the review btw

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 15 October 2018 12:01 (two days ago) Permalink

I love them. The album is fantastic. They have a substantial following in the alternative evangelical scene (e.g. they worked with Daniel Smith and released on Tooth & Nail).

Allen (etaeoe), Monday, 15 October 2018 12:58 (two days ago) Permalink

The spoken vocals on "Another Head for the Hydra" were reminding me a lot of the... something.
Then it struck me -- Steve Wynn's vocals at the end of "Until Lately" (on the Dream Syndicate's first album).

enochroot, Monday, 15 October 2018 13:57 (two days ago) Permalink

also thanks everyone <3

anyone listening want a brain washed like mine

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 15 October 2018 21:24 (two days ago) Permalink

His writing is dense, but the density is the point of the project; he is trying to convey the totality of not knowing.

From yr review Brad, this boils it down for me in a way. I couldn't have expressed it anymore succinct and otm than this.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 15 October 2018 21:37 (two days ago) Permalink

PS. notwithstanding the inexplicable comparison of 'New Wine, New Skins' to B&S's 'The State I Am In'! I do not get that at all, as much as I would like to (but I don't have a lyric sheet at hand).

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 15 October 2018 21:53 (two days ago) Permalink

imo musically, the first half of “new wine” could credibly be a b&s song imo, just the most depressing sounding b&s song ever. he also literally mentions the song in the lyrics

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 16 October 2018 14:50 (yesterday) Permalink

Was already loving this, but Brad's review + reading some of the lyrics have opened it up even more. (I certainly hadn't made the B+S connection but yeah it's right there in the lyrics and I can hear it too now I'm paying attention.)

Also August 6th should be on the album. But I always play the EP straight after the album anyway so it's not really a problem.

toby, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 17:05 (yesterday) Permalink

xp I see now, that's p neat.
