thread of what katherine is listening to at this particular moment

as mentioned in the "what will you do when ilx poofs" thread. once upon a time I was going to do this on medium, but that's for 2018 tracks. this one, however, happens to be one:

Desperate Journalist, "It Gets Better"

in addition to having a fantastic band name -- one wonders why music critics (one speaks in the third person to disguise the fact that this totally means me) haven't elevated them to ubiquity out of sheer "big mood"ness -- this alternates between "great post-punk track" and a short section of "Kay Hanley fronting the Police"

Is it a particularly good band name? It feels a bit ... I dunno ... small? Too enthralled to the journalist it is belittling?

I mean, lots of people actually do want to belittle journalists, have invented an entire sub-vocabulary with which to do so, and this isn't part of it

I miss that scrappy aiming-for-the-charts-but-still-kinda-Wiiija period of UK band music

meanwhile, the other day I'd mentioned trawling a bunch of Egyptian indie on SoundCloud (the trick to soundcloud: go through likes, then followers. following can also work but is largely the really big names). my favorite of the lot:

Cheen - Leff: Egyptian metal singer goes solo and makes "Army of Me"; obviously I love it

Is Desperate Journalist a reference to the Cure's Peel Session response to a bad review?

outside, you're never alone. (Austin), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 19:25 (one year ago) link

The Desperate Journalist one sounds like literally everything I listened to in the 90s and I can't quite believe the vocalist isn't off some other band.
I see they're doing a gig with Marion; seems appropriate

kinder, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 19:39 (one year ago) link

a few older tracks

Solar Twins - Alleluias

the fact that I do not have a Katy B and/or Amelia Brightman cover of this is completely unacceptable, and it better keep those alleluia-like high synth runs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HAKygeaZV8

Cath Carroll - Moves Like You

the fact that there is a remix of this perfect/deeply horny/deeply sad song (at least one on youtube) and it is lumbering and clunky, is completely unacceptable. also anachronistic of a fact given when this came out, and I really didn't look for that long -- surely something must exist?

apropos of all the tori amos discussion, I just heard this album by Italian artist Beatrice Antolini while browsing spotify related artists. it came out in february so way too late to pitch anywhere, but the whole thing blew me away, and while it's not derivative at all, a lot of it in particular reminds me of From the Choirgirl Hotel. (the other reference point would be the new Fever Ray if it used more guitars).

this, for instance, is already good before it goes into a giant "Raspberry Swirl" breakdown.

xp -- glad you liked it! I don't listen to/know about nearly enough Italian artists. sadly Spotify is a dead end as far as related artists but she does do vocals on this, which is entirely my sort of thing and 17-year-old me would have disintegrated

That opening verse reminds me of something, and it's going to make me crazy trying to figure out what. Then the crazy organ riff comes in and they're in full-on Opeth territory.

this is not really a representative list, and it's also eight, not five, but:

Throwing Muses, 1986 s/t and/or Kristin Hersh, Sunny Border Blue
Tychonaut, Love Life
Kate Bush, The Dreaming and/or The Red Shoes
Tori Amos, From the Choirgirl Hotel
Massive Attack, Mezzanine and/or Blue Lines
Fiona Apple, When the Pawn and/or Idler Wheel
Stina Nordenstam, The World Is Saved and/or Dynamite
Ladytron, Witching Hour and/or Velocifero

Man, that first Muses album on 4ad is a watershed mark. That thing is so brilliantly unique. I saw the reunited Muses play the Great American Music Hall around the time that 50`Wave was just coming around and they closed their set with 'Vicky's Box.' Pretty fucking rad.
