Holy shit this is a motherfucker.

The album is called 'Qualm' but I didn't think that would pull the punters in in the same way as 'Hyper-Intelligent Genetically Enriched Cyborg' so hey.

From what I can tell it's recorded largely live, with one drum machine and one synth, and the whole thing is similarly face-melting. I appreciated rather than loved her last album, Discreet Desires, but this one is flat out astonishing throughout.

oh shit, i really liked discreet desires

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 7 August 2018 17:43 (six years ago) link

I should point out there are actually some really gorgeous meditative synth melodies in there alongside all the distorted kick drums and lasers and acid squelches.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 7 August 2018 17:51 (six years ago) link

i haven't heard it yet but if you're right, album of the year

thought i was in for a strict diet of drum sounds and then "entropy created you and me" happened, god this rules

the thing that struck me about discreet desires is that she has a great sense of groove that keeps your attention moving with the music, and it applies here too even when there's v little of the rushing 808 vortex to hold directly onto

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 7 August 2018 18:48 (six years ago) link

Bought her whole catalog on Bandcamp after reading an interview with her the other week. So far I like it, but I was hoping to love it. Haven't made it all the way through Qualm yet, though.

grawlix (unperson), Tuesday, 7 August 2018 18:59 (six years ago) link

Listening to the album now and yes this rules hard. It's fantastic and lots of it sounds so dirty. I had to check my needle for dust. Lovely synth melodies too.

kraudive, Tuesday, 7 August 2018 19:31 (six years ago) link

probably best off ignoring the faint praise it get's on RA. Only heard a few tracks and it sounds ace!

calzino, Tuesday, 7 August 2018 19:34 (six years ago) link

fantastic producer, consistently goes hard

brimstead, Tuesday, 7 August 2018 19:42 (six years ago) link

That's a banger

paolo, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 06:56 (six years ago) link

I only heard of her just recently, checked a few tracks from the new album and I loved them. Definitely will buy the whole LP.

...she has a great sense of groove that keeps your attention moving with the music

Seriously, go see her DJ when you can.

willem, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 11:30 (six years ago) link

Loved Discreet Desires, only heard one from this but it's shaping up well.

emil.y, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 16:52 (six years ago) link

I've heard she's an incredible DJ. I haven't listened to this album yet: the last one didn't thrill me and the faint praise from other sources hasn't seen it shoot up my list yet...

boxedjoy, Saturday, 11 August 2018 09:38 (six years ago) link

I've heard a few of her mixes and she's decent but I don't see what all the fuss is about. Maybe she's a lot better live or something

paolo, Saturday, 11 August 2018 10:02 (six years ago) link

This albums fucking great, that's the "fuss". The usual correction for a female artist though eh?

kraudive, Saturday, 11 August 2018 10:23 (six years ago) link

Bought this a couple of days ago, and listened twice maybe? Not had masses of time for music lately but this is great. Feels like it does the Jon Hopkins thing of starting with bangers and then narratively leaving the club and walking home, only she's in a way more interesting club to start off with, and she's nowhere near as boring as him.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 11 August 2018 21:10 (six years ago) link

idg what ppl who don't like this are looking for in music

flopson, Saturday, 11 August 2018 22:01 (six years ago) link

really disagree w the RA review that the last 2 tracks are weak. 'panegyric' esp so mindbending

flopson, Saturday, 11 August 2018 22:57 (six years ago) link

Love this album, love those dirty acid sounds. Never really listened to Discreet Desires, curious to check it out.

breastcrawl, Sunday, 12 August 2018 01:03 (six years ago) link

The Smell of Suds and Steel is just frigging awesome!

calzino, Sunday, 12 August 2018 12:15 (six years ago) link

“panegyric” is unbelievably amazing

album is unbelievably amazing

princess of hell (BradNelson), Sunday, 19 August 2018 16:05 (six years ago) link

yeah, i love it so much. all about 'lifestyle guru' right now, that grimy churning acid is so satisfying

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Sunday, 19 August 2018 18:52 (six years ago) link

dirtbox acid mournful synth - every track's a belter. Aoty.

i should clarify, i have no specific criticism of her productions, just don't think they're as exceptional as her dj skills
